I have been a loyal lender us customer since 1986, when I had to use their catalog to get then-hard-to-find chipotle chiles mailed to me at the University of Texas. 35 years later I am still buying from Pendery's, and when I was back home visiting my Mom in FW I would go to their original store in downtown Fort Worth where the business had been operating since the 1870s. Needless to say, I buy in bulk and I don't replenish with inferior grocery store national brand chili powder or powdered chile. The bottle of hot sauce this spot sells named "The Colon Cleanser" is definitely going to end up as a couple of folks Christmas gifts this year (LOL!). This place has tons of different spices, as well as spice blends/rubs, and only the good Lord knows how many different chiles. They also have a few herbs, teas, and about a million and one different types of hot sauce. This is a store you can easily get lost in for an hour or longer if you're hanging with friends who also love to cook. You can also find some cute, unique gifts here, such as cookbooks, aprons, socks...yes, socks with pics of chiles on them of course (HA!), aprons, tea pots, candies (with chiles in them), a coffee plant growing kit, a beer foamer, etc. But, like many Texans, these folks especially love peppers - there is one whole section of the store devoted to them. I am saving up funds to come back for some of the Pure vanilla they sell (whole bean, liquid, and powder forms). The pure stuff is pricey, but it lasts forever and makes foods taste amazing. This rating is based totally off of the experience, which I might add was actually quite limited. We stopped by wanting to look for some specific spices that are hard to find. It was 1430 hours and they didn't close until 1700. The lighted sign and plastic flip sign both said they were open, however, the doors were locked. There was a sign on the front door that said they would be back in 5 minutes. We allowed about 20 minutes to pass and no one appeared. This was a paper sign that looked like it had been out for more than a few hours. Very disappointing. We tried calling, no one answered. Very disappointing. Not sure how this place stays in business with this type of action. Make sure to call in advance if you really want to go here and actually get inside. read more

This place is a gift to those of us who love to cook and bake. Spices and drief herbs: if you need it, you can find it here. Must-haves: 1) cinnamon- this is a high oil cinnamon. Didn't know you needed it? Obviously you haven't tasted THIS cinnamon. 2) smoked paprika-good on/in everything. It gives this amazing smokey goodness without added heat, therefore it plays well with so many other spices and chilies. 3) cumin-sure you can buy cumin everywhere (as with cinnamon) but THIS is so robust it'll blow your mind. 4) tandoori blend-amazing, spicy, delicious. Sprinkle this over cauliflower drizzled with olive oil and roast for 45 minutes and your life will forever change. Must-experience: the ROOM (yep, it's a room full) of chili spice blends and dried peppers. Every time I go I get a new blend to try. And if you aren't that adventurous, as their knowledgeable staff for direction. If/when we leave this area I know this will be one of the local gems I'll miss the most. read more

Wow!!! When I checked into this place I saw I had written than a 5-star review. It's been a while since I've been here and I can see why they would have a 3 star review. I sincerely hope the short Hispanic last working in this store doesn't own it because she's definitely in the wrong business. If she doesn't and whoever owns this store reads this, this women needs some training in customer service. I stopped in today looking for cinnamon. I was lured by the spices at the front that highlighted margaritas and since yesterday was National Margarita Day (weekend!) I wanted to try some of these fun things out. I saw lime powder and I asked if I could use that when I don't have fresh limes. She looked at me and said "that is chili lime salt" - I was confused because it clearly said Lime POWDER. She walked over and saw the lime powder, said "that's in the wrong place" and proceeded to remove all the lime powder packets and move them. She never answered my question so I asked again and she seemed put out like I should know what to do with lime powder. Back to why I went there in the first place - i went I specifically for a Ceylon Cinnamon. Actually, I couldn't remember which type of cinnamon I needed. When I asked about cinnamon she walked me to the cinnamon sticks. When I asked which cinnamon I needed that was healthier to consume she told me Ceylon. I asked her if they carried it in powdered form. She said NO and walked off. I asked why they didn't carry it in powder form and she said "we do carry cinnamon in powder form" and showed me the bags. I asked again about the Ceylon cinnamon and she gave me what felt like a lecture on all cinnamon needed to be consumed in moderation. I googled Ceylon and saw you can consume 2.5 tsp a day. Her entire demeanor was rude. She walked off. I briefly looked around for a few more seconds and walked out. She didn't say a word to me when I headed for the door. L left with No cinnamon. I was making a recipe that required a chili spice outside even Central Market's capabilities. Pendery's had exactly what I needed, along with quite a few things I didn't need that came home with me too. The quality was excellent and was VERY reasonably priced for the quantity compared to inferior store bought brands. I would also recommend coming here if you are looking for a unique gift for a foodie friend. They had a lot of options in local and regional cookbooks and other things besides spices. The only reason I gave it four instead of five stars is that their hours make it a bit more difficult to just stop in, especially if you work during the day. That is usually the case with small businesses though. Just be sure to check the hours when you are heading over there. I always seem to want to go on Sundays or on weeknight evenings, when the grocery shopping gets done and that's a no-go here. Having been a Pendery's customer for years, I can say that their products never disappoint! Spices, teas, cookbooks, kitchen accessories - it's all good. Very nice and extremely helpful staff. What a really cool store! I was inspired to find the location after seeing their goods at Central Market, and was happily rewarded. Lately, as a bartender, I've been making a lot of bitters, and well, there's a lot of stuff that goes into them that can be very difficult to locate. Unless you stop in at Pendery's that is... Everywhere throughout the store is just rack after rack of spices in different bag sizes for whatever your need may be. Assortments of spices, herbs, chili blends, dried fruits, pectins, and so on are organized by use and shelved with alike goods. I was able to quickly breeze through and fill out my extensive list with relative ease. Most importantly though, the costs weren't outrageous as they be in specialty shops. This is definitely on my radar the next time I need to stock up on goods for making bitters or just refilling the kitchen spice rack. read more

We were out of some staples (coriander seed) and getting low on cloves, cinnamon, chipotle, etc. Also bought some Szechuan pepper - love that slightly lemony heat, and some pink peppercorns because they are pretty., Pine nuts too. The Pendery's "Original" is the best chili powder I've had, and I've been at this a while. They also have a good pickling spice blend. I used it to pickle eggs, which turned out great. Nice little store, with some interesting gift stuff. They don't have grits, they use a tiny amount of MSG in some blends, and some of the labels on the delicious hot sauces they carry can apparently throw more easily offended people into a tantrum. For those that aren't bothered by any of that trivial stuff, go check 'em out. The quantity and variety of chili and blends is staggering. If you use a kit of Glenn Dickey or Randy Moore for a friendly office chili cookoff, don't be surprised if your boss offers you a promotion. The spices, teas and curry blends are pretty impressive, too. Who else in Fort Worth has frankincense, turmeric fingers, (real) saffron and genuine Mexican vanilla? I enquired about sending back the spices (unopened of course) or getting some kind of refund and never heard back from them. Terrible customer service. Don't bother. DO NOT PURCHASE FROM THIS COMPANY! What an absolute nightmare experience with them. My mother in law purchased a gift certificate for me from Penderys. When I went online to redeem it (I live in LA) there was nowhere to use a gift certificate as a method of payment on their shopping cart. I then called to place a phone order. The girl had horrible phone presence, mumbled like hell, and couldn't even add up the gift certificate and balance (mostly super high shipping) to complete the order. I gave her my cc for the balance. Low and behold, my card was charged for the wrong amount (verified in my online banking records). I was charged for what should have been on the gift certificate. I called a couple days after the order was placed and got the same mumbly gal who told me she would refund it. Two days later the charge was still on my records. I got a guy and he told me it was credited already. I conveyed that I did not believe him and needed a confirmation via email that showed my refund transaction had occurred. He put me on hold then mumbly girl came on again and told me it was refunded. I told her I had already spoken to her twice and no, it was not. I was then told that their "system" wouldn't take the gift certificate and that they would have to mail me a check. I was furious! Called her out on her lie and told her to cancel the order. I also let her know that if this was not resolved by the next business day, I would be taking all the action I could within my rights as a consumer. Oh hell no! While recovering from back surgery recently, I started reading cook books and came upon the idea that I could make my own sausages---ones without added chemical ingredients. As soon as I could get out and about, I went to Pendery's for advice and supplies even though I had only driven by the store previously. Their reputation is that good! One of the great things about this place is that the store manager is a chef and could give so much useful information about what I would or would not need. I came out of there with every spice that I saw in the cookbooks--ready to produce all kinds of sausage. The only thing they did not have was the hog casings, which I discovered can be purchased from a Carniceria ( a Mexican meat store which still has old-fashioned butchers). The spices are so much cheaper in bulk than buying from a supermarket that I bought 4 oz of everything for the same price as the small bottle at Albertson's or Kroger's. We even decided to try some of their barbecue rubs and chili mixes. And, this is a good place to find "chicken base" that is not over-salted like the bouillon powders you can find at a grocery store. Pendery's is the best place to find unusual spices that cookbooks call for such as garam marsala or powdered Worcestershire. The prices are good and the advice from the chef is worth asking for. read more

The woman working behind the counter--who couldn't even be bothered to look up from her cell phone--told me that they don't carry things that you can generally find in a grocery store. Actually five-and-a-half stars. I could spend $1000 here. It's the only place I buy dried herbs and ground spices. Their spices are so much more flavourful than the trollop you get at the grocery store or even a farmer's market. The Pendery's house chili powder is all I will ever use until I'm dead of death. Some tell it that they are responsible for a "famous" FTW Tex-Mex restaurant's enchilada sauce flavour. Staff isn't rude...they're just straight-forward. On June 13, 2014, I placed my first order with Pendery's using a gift certificate I had received for a gift. I sent original certificates (made copies with copy of order form) and the order form that listed both e-mail and telephone number on it for correspondence purposes. After placing a call (July 21st) to Pendery's on why I hadn't I received my order, I found out that as a result of data inputting error where the inputter did not attached the gift certificates as payment , my order was never placed but being held. No one at Pendery's contacted me to ask about payment. It wasn't until my call that I found out what the problem was with my order. The woman helping me issued my order July 24, 2014 and I received it Monday, July 28, 2014. I was still charged for shipping, which I think was wrong because Pendery's failed to inform me of their error or to provide adequate customer service. Fabulous store! We stopped by to pick up some Ancho chili powder and ended up with multiple types and blends. The gentleman who helped us was very knowledgeable and helpful.
