This is usually where I order delivery sushi from. I like Sakura (and now Tadashi) more, but they don't deliver. The sushi is pretty acceptable-- I've never had a problem but it's never mind-blowing. The delivery isn't too long of a wait (40-50 minutes), since they aren't downtown. I ate in their restaurant once and had dishes besides the sushi. Everything was decent. It's a place I order from to meet my sushi cravings, but otherwise, it's not ever somewhere I think to order from. I know it's from the same people who own Fuji and Jade, but for some reason, I think Penang has better sushi. read more

I ordered the Shrimp fried rice and the quality of this food is amazing. The shrimp, a type I've never had before. It was cleaned and fresh, and delicious!!! I've never had a better shrimp fried rice! I wish they had added more shrimp and rice. The Penang curry was not my cup of tea. But my Step father ate the whole dish in under two minutes!!! He loves spice and if you do too you'll enjoy this as well. My pallet prefers Indian shrimp curry and to compare with Penang would be unfair. The dish was wonderfully made with delicious veggies. It is a delight for spicy curry and shrimp lovers and a sight for sore eyes indeed! Beautiful blend of colors! When the delivery driver arrived he was extremely grateful to receive a $5 tip. This place has a big parking lot. The price is reasonable. Flavor is good. I ordered Beef Pad Thai. They gave me a generous amount, which I couldn't finish. I was able to take home for lunch for the next day. Hubby had Shrimp Fried Rice and it was delicious. He couldn't finish his meal too, so left over to take home. They even gave us a small free fried squid appetizer. I didn't expect that at all. Service here is fast. We've been coming to this place whenever we visited PSU. Pan-Asian and delicious. I never expected I'd be able to get my Malaysian food fix after moving here to State College, but to my surprise the nasi lemak here is on par with or perhaps even better than my beloved Banana Leaf's (Philly's go-to for Malyasian cuisine.) Highly recommended for a satisfying and varied dish -- you get a serving of coconut rice, chicken curry, dried anchovies, hot spicy sauce, pickled veggies, and half a hardboiled egg. Their pickled veggies and fruits are heavenly. The Pad Thai is a tad too citrus-y, but tastier than I've had elsewhere in State College. The sushi is also not bad at all. The second time the bf and I went we decided to splurge and order the nicely arranged sushi and sashimi Love Boat, and it was almost too much for two people to handle. The "special" roll stood out as being particularly filling; it was like Frankenstein's delicious maki and nigiri monster. Eel, avocado, cucumber, tuna, roe, spicy mayonnaise, unagi sauce and like half the size of my fist... insanity. The only thing I've found thus far to be a major disappointment is the roti canai, also known as Indian pancake -- instead of the tearable, delicious bread puffs with curry to dip that we were hoping for, we were presented with six or seven teeny tiny precut bread triangles and a disproportionately huge vat of curry. My five stars is to couterbalance the other more negative reviews, provided mostly because some other raters find fault with the name of the place. For me, I am absolutely delighted to have a dining option in the cultural and geographic hinterlands of State College, PA that offers an attempt at authentic cuisine from Malaysia and the surrounding area. The choice of the name is actually quite appropriate, since Penang (the city) cuisine offers a mixture of various cultural and culinary influences in the region. Penang is arguably the home of some of the best street vendor cooking in the world, let alone the region. In our first visit, my wife, stepson and I sampled various items, a Thai chicken curry, Malaysian beef stew (or sorts) and a stir fry. The curry and beef dishes were wonderfully rich and spicy, though my wife was not as pleased with her choice (stir fry). The clientele was mixed with about a third of the diners seeming to represent cultures and countries well beyond central PA, which is always a very good sign. What a fantastic addition to the dining scene in our town, or for visitors looking for something unique! My single concern is more about me than about Penang. Simply put, I wish I knew more about the menu items to be guided to dishes that would match my palate. In an ideal world, I would love for Penang to provide more of a guided tour of the menu that explains more about the origins, the ingredients and the flavor of various dishes. In that respect, I would refer other readers to one of the first comments in this list for giving some guidance about the dishes she has had elsewhere and which she clearly enjoys. We went during the Thanksgiving break. Few people but they took forever to bring the food out. We were 4 adults. We had them make one dinner dish into a vegetarian version. They had to remake it. But I still think they had added the fish sauce/oil to my broccoli. I would rather go to Cozy Thai as they have perfected their food for vegetarians. Previous reviews say that it's difficult to find vegetarian items here. What an understatement! This place is a vegetarian's nightmare. We assumed that the other reviews meant vegetarian options were limited. In actuality, they are non-existent. We ordered three entrees during our visit, two of which included no meat in the menu description and the other listed only shrimp. My husband specifically asked if his dish was vegetarian. The server looked over the menu description and said there was no meat listed. He asked again to clarify if there was any meat like chicken or beef. The server said, "No beef. Okay," wrote something down and walked away. When our dishes arrived, two of the three came out with chicken included in the dish even though there was no mention of chicken in the description. My husband's "no meat" dish included chicken and pork. Service in general was very slow. It was nearly twenty minutes from the time we were seated until someone took our order. It was another 30 minutes before we got our entrees, which came out at different times over a 10 minute window. To their credit, they were very apologetic when my husband sent his dish back and promised to make him a vegetarian version. However, after another 15 minutes of waiting, we decided it wasn't worth it and that we would rather pay the bill and go. Overall, we were very disappointed in the food and service. Not accurately listing what's in a dish is inexcusable, IMHO. I love Malaysian cuisine, but vegetarians beware: this is not the place to get it. read more

Another option from the Fuji & Jade/My Thai/Hunan Wok/Okinawa group. And par for the course, another "not amazing, but good" option. Let me start by getting this out of the way...why does every Malaysian restaurant feel the need to beef up its menu by adding Pan-Asian dishes instead of just sticking to their own cuisine?? I'd rather have less menu options and a higher quality of food. By the way, as others have said, it's not "Asian Fusion" at all but Yelp has the category locked. Should be in these categories: Malaysian, Thai, Sushi Bars. So I admittedly don't know much about Malay cuisine, but I ordered two dishes that I've had elsewhere: the Roti Canai and the Mee Goreng. Both were as good as I expected them to be. A little greasy and probably MSG-laden but I enjoyed the meal. The Mee Goreng was a massive portion and it was already a very heavy dish, so it literally took me four days to finish the leftovers (by which point the safety of consuming them was probably questionable, but hey it's good for your immune system, right?). I will say that while the Roti Canai was good when I ate in here, it was not good when I did takeout, probably because the roti lost its freshness. I wouldn't make that mistake again. Secret tip! (or not): The sushi menu is exactly the same as the one at Fuji & Jade and the sushi is the same quality level (that is, edible). So if Fuji & Jade has a long wait, you can order from here instead and get the exact same thing much faster, since they are rarely busy. You're welcome. read more

As a Malaysian, I reckon the food here tastes relatively bad and is a bit pricey compared to the other Malaysian restaurants in the states. The food and service used to be alright for the first two times but things didn't improve at all ! To further worsen the case, here was what happened during my third visit today. I went with my friends and we ordered our food. The food came like after 40 minutes waiting (They could do better since there wasn't really a big crowd). When we were done, we asked for the bill and a friend of mine noticed a mistake on the bill. It stated an extra of 4 dollars to what was shown on the menu. When we queried the manager, he argued that that was the old menu and he said they had ordered new menus. Of course we were not satisfied with his answer and finally he relented after our persistent stands. He was obviously unhappy and when the new bill came, he sarcastically asked us if we were first time there and he told us that we should check the price every time before ordering because according to him, "apparently there are many mistakes on the menu". I think it is ridiculous to have the customers check for the price because they are supposed to get things right on their own menu! I am guessing that the manager/boss gets cocky because the business is getting on track. I would definitely not return to this restaurant anymore until things get improved. read more

I was more than disappointed. After being paraded around the restaurant only to be shown to a seat right by the door, my partner and I sat for at least twenty minutes before anyone even came to offer us a drink. We had discussed walking out, but we decided to give it a go. Finally, when the (presumable) manager came to the table he gave us no choice of drink but said "WATER FOR YOU." and walked away. When he came back, we asked for hot tea to go with the water. I ordered chicken curry with rice, and my partner ordered spicy thai chicken. My dish had so many bones and so much skin that I mostly ate rice mixed with curry sauce. My partner's was completely inedible, as it arrived at the table with a hair in it. We tried to flag down ANYONE for more than fifteen minutes. When the manager-type man finally came back, he jerked the plate off the table and walked away. With poor service, ridiculously high prices, and downright rude workers, I recommend that you avoid this place at all costs. Especially if you are a white person. read more

Ordered the food via Order Up and it was delivered an hour later. Ordered vegetable basil fried rice and vegetable Pad thai. Pad thai was super dry and not tasty at all. Fried rice was smelling very bad and am very sure it isn't made fresh or they just separated the non vegetarian pieces from it. Trust me when I say its smelling bad coz I am a vegetarian and I tried a lot of cuisines which aren't vegetarian in particular. I don't usually complain about the smell unless its really bad. I absolutely love Penang! I have been a fan of Malaysian food since my study abroad in college and I was very pleasantly surprised to find such a great Malaysian place here in state college. They give big portions when you eat in. I love the Achat appetizer and their spicy Chow kueh teow main dish. Try the appetizer! Friends of mine were surprised how much they enjoyed it! Not to mention we were their only customers and were in and out before 11pm. Of the 4 employees they had working not one bothered to straight out the rolled up carpet by the door which tripped me on the way out. Not a Malaysian restaurant! Dead give away 1) When you ask for hot pepper, they said they only have Sriracha hot pepper. WTF! Malaysian restaurant will have and give you at least one of the following:sambal, hot pepper oil, or fresh cut chilli pepper. 2) Char Kway Teow is made of WIDE rice noodle. WTF2! Char Kway Teow noodle need to be 1/4 inch or less. Bean spout is hardly cook. Taste not that good. 3) Hokkien Char and Seafood Noodle are exactly the same flavor. WTF3! Great, if you don't mind a bunch of MSG. I made the mistake of not asking (since MSG isn't usually used in Malaysia or India) and suffered greatly the next day. I called today and they said that they use MSG in most of their dishes. If it is something made fresh, you can request it without MSG, but many of their dishes (like all the curries) are made up ahead of time and already have it in the sauce. If you don't mind MSG, I'll tell you the chicken & potato curry is excellent and the green curry and drunkman noodles are both quite good, but the mapo tofu is severely lacking in quality and authenticity. Was not pleased with the fact my waiter could not explain any of the food to me due to lack of speaking english. Food he told me "No Spicy" was extra spicy. My drinking glass was disgusting... and there was even an argument with a Asian employee and an American girl right in front of my table. There lack of respect for her was intolerable. Although I was sad to see Backyard Burger go, I was pretty excited when Penang opened up shop in that building. I suppose I was used to the casual atmosphere that Backyard Burger had, but the inside is totally different. It's actually much fancier than I expected. My boyfriend and I went there hoping for a casual late lunch, and in that respect, we were a bit disappointed. Besides, having a fancy atmosphere, Penang also does not have any sort of lunch menu. The prices in the menu are right on par for what I'd want to pay for a decent dinner, but it was a bit more than I wanted to pay for lunch. Perhaps this is why we were the only customers in the entire restaurant at that time (around 2pm). I was not impressed at all with the waitstaff in the restaurant. Our waiter was very pushy. He kept asking us if we wanted an appetizer and telling us what to try even though we told him that we weren't interested in an appetizer. I think he finally got the hint after about the 4th try. I also do not think this restaurant is very accommodating when it comes to special requests. One of my favorite Asian dishes is Pineapple Coconut Fried rice. On their menu, they have two separate dishes: Pineapple Fried Rice and Coconut Fried Rice. When I asked if I could either have pineapple added to the coconut fried rice or have coconut rice used with the Pineapple dish (which seemed like a simple request to me), the waiter acted insulted and told me it was absolutely not possible. I ended up ordering the Pineapple Fried Rice, and my boyfriend got the Mango Chicken. I was disappointed with my meal. The Pineapple Fried Rice was very bland. I ended up putting soy sauce on it just to give it some flavor (which I almost never do). However, my boyfriend let me try some of his dish, and the Mango Chicken was excellent. One good thing I can say about both dishes: the give you a lot of food. During the meal, the waitstaff disappointed me yet again. At that point, two other people had come into the restaurant, so there were 4 customers total. I could visibly see at least 5 employees. Yet getting a refill on my water was next to impossible. My boyfriend and I were there for about an hour, and the waiter only refilled my small water glass once that entire time. Bottom line: Would I eat here again? Yes. But not for lunch. If they improved their waitstaff, i would probably give this restaurant 4 stars. read more
