He sounded a booth in their dining room. The booth tables are too short for their seating! It's round or uncomfortable. We ordered a few dishes to start with and then a couple of dishes for our main meal. Unfortunately, the entire service was absolutely disjointed with things coming out willy-nilly from the kitchen. This is such a cute, family owned business! The food was delicious and the lady taking our orders was super sweet!!

We tried this restaurant while passing through the area, based on the ratings of others. The menu offered a great selection of standard Chinese cuisine, with a few custom offerings. Our family had the steak and shrimp, general Tso's chicken, chicken subgum and cashew chicken. We enjoyed all the offerings, but found the Tso's chicken was a bit different than the normal dishes of other restaurants, and not at all spicy. Egg rolls and wontons were good, as was the sweet and sour soup. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant it's self is a bit of a dive, and really could use an update, but not uncleanly. As long as you can passed the outdated digs, you should enjoy your dining experience. read more

Peking has been around for decades and, in that time, really hasn't changed at all. When you first walk in, you're greeted with music from a Chinese cassette tape in a dimly lit room. The place could definitely use some sprucing up, but that's not why you're there. The food is delicious. Easily the best Chinese food in a 30 mile radius. The hot and sour soup is the best I've ever had--no other place comes close. In general, their food is just amazing and the portions are generous. Jane and Paul owned the place since before I was born but recently retired and sold it off to a young, Chinese couple. The new owners are every bit as nice as the previous ones and the food is identical--the new cook worked will Paul for months before they left. And for tea lovers, they actually serve you delicious, traditional Chinese oolong tea, not green. If you're in Ashland, you can't pass up Peking. Enjoy! read more

I get the feel that the folks who own Peking have resigned themselves to the fact that operating an Asian restaurant with legitimately decent culinary possibilities isn't going to be as appreciated as it should be. As long as I've lived here, Peking has occupied its own little slice of Ashland's downtown, offering its food to a public that generally appears to find Jake's to be the local definition of "exotic and exciting". If you're in the mood for sit-down Asian/Chinese food, Peking is definitely the restaurant in Ashland to enjoy it in. The atmosphere is quiet, relatively intimate, and well-lit, and Korrin hit it on the head by highlighting the green tea that is automatically served to you upon arrival - that's a lovely detail of this restaurant that I'd almost forgotten. read more

Wow has the place gone downhill food wise. The entrees were swimming in sauce, the vegetables were old and limp and they stopped making those delicious big egg rolls. Our egg rolls were the size of fingers, extremely greasy and we couldn't find any filling. We had to throw them away. It's rare, but sometimes things are exactly as you remember them. Take Ashland's own Peking Restaurant, for example. It'd been more than a decade since I'd been there, but this little family-owned spot never lost its place in my heart as the gold standard by which all other Chinese restaurants were measured. Growing up, we ate here (at least) weekly. In retrospect, I realize those visits comprised my first exposures to ethnic foods of any kind. (In Ashland, in the '80s, this was exotic, after all.) Thankfully, absolutely nothing has changed. Every detail, right down to the hand-written Sunday buffet menu in the window, is exactly the same as it was on my last visit. Okay, so last week my friend and I decided to randomly drive somewhere. We meant to stay close to Columbus, but somehow ended up in Ashland. By the time we got to Ashland we were starving, and the bright neon sign above Peking Restaurant initially reeled me in, so we stopped to give it a try. My friend and I had a really nice meal here...The decor isn't much, but it was very comforting, if that makes sense. Everything was delicious, our waitress was very friendly, and it was pretty reasonably priced. I also liked how we got hot tea with our meal. I almost want to drive back up to Ashland with some friends to eat here again! Scratch that almost, we WILL come back to eat here again...and to visit Grandpa's Cheesebarn, which was closed when we were in the area. read more

Second visit to the wonderful restaurant. We came for a late lunch around 1:30 on a Saturday, and there was no one here. The lunch portions are HUGE so be sure to come hungry. I got the spicy Hunan beef and my husband got the chicken chop suey. Each dish came with soup, spring roll, and homemade fried rice. I chose the hot and sour soup with my lunch and it was perfection. It was so delicious! This is simply the best Chinese food. All in all we had two meals with soup, spring roll, and fried rice and our total bill was $11.70 ... unbeatable price! Love love love peking!!! Definitely overall best Chinese restaurant in town. The crab Rangoon's are the top three best crab raccoons I've had (that's coming from A former resident of Chinatown in Cleveland). The potstickers rival the potstickers I have had in San Francisco's Chinatown. And they have my all-time favorite hot mustard and duck sauce is made in house. The staff there is fantastic. My mom and I eat there every Sunday and we absolutely love our server she is the best super attentive and after just three visits she had already learned the extras we like at our table and the extras we will be taking home with us. read more

As we wen through downtown Ashland we saw the Peking sign .The sign on the front of the restaurant was a little tattered but we agreed to go in and try it out. to our surprise the food was authentic and delicious. we try to go every week now. There is nothing not to adore about Peking. The family that owns it is VERY sweet and personable. They will make your food ANY way you want it (and it will actually come out that way! I'm a spicy girl myself, and usually "this girl wants it to be extra spicy" comes out as "this is for a girl" food). Peking provides a lovely, quiet atmosphere to really enjoy your food in. They also serve you green tea right when you get there. AND, being vegan, I'm especially excited for the fact that they actually have tofu! She was rather shocked the first time I ordered it. The whole Rust Belt region always has a whiff of old school, and Peking does old school well. First, it has the original sign on the outside that says 'air conditioned' which I love. Second, the floral wall paper and dim lighting fixtures add to the mysterious tone of the past. Finally, the food is chinese food done very well. That is, if you know your chinese food, you can order off the menu and you'll get the real deal. Otherwise, super red sweet 'n sour chicken for you! We waited at the hostess stand for 10 min for dinner without being seated. After 7 minutes of waiting, a waitress came out of the kitchen to serve a table but then went back in without making eye contact. We had been pleasantly surprised to find several tables occupied when we arrived since it was a Sunday but as we waited we realized a lot of them were waiting to be served. When it became clear that we aren't going to be attended to, we left disappointed. One does not go to Peking for the "atmosphere," though if decades old wall decor is your thing... (Actually, to me it just adds to the whole experience, but I digress.) One goes to Peking for Chinese food that is different than your average "Americanized" Chinese restaurant. No frozen breaded chicken nuggets in overly sweet sauce here, everything you order will be fresh and homemade, and even made to order if you so desire (ie, if you want it extra spicy, or not so spicy, or want to change around the ingredients). Sort of hard to believe a place like this exists in little ole Ashland, a town full of such culinary delights as Jakes and Lynn Way (sarcasm there). I've been coming to this restaurant since I was 7 years old. Empress Chicken mild no veggetables, best fried rice ever (it is brown in appearance and doesn't have junk in it, like other places), delicious egg rolls and house sauce that I've never been able to find any where else. I only go to one other place out of town, but this is my go to place when in town. I am very critical of Asian Cusine (at least for what type of restaurants we have in north east Ohio). Personally, I think some places get bad reviews (saw one that was too harsh) is because they are use to generic Chinese food places that serve the same fried nuggets in different sauces lol gross. This place is worth trying more than one thing but when you find a favorite it's hard to part from it in my experience. read more
