You must dine here when in Ronda! It´s right across the street from the Plaza del Toro. The ´Rabo de Toro´ (oxtail stew) is their specialty dish. Most tourists don´t know that this restaurant exists, so it`s ok when you walk in and it seems quiet, the price is competitive to all the other restaurants that are on the main streets or in the alleys. I´m surprised that our hotel concierge didn´t even recommend this spot. When we dined there there was another couple. The vibe was very romantic and intimate.
A plate of their ´Rabo de Toro´ is 17 Euros (big serving to share), this same plate would cost up to 25 Euros at the restaurants facing the El Tajo Canyon and who knows if they are any good. In fact, a local shopkeeper on the outskirts of the city was the one who recommended this restaurant when we asked for where we could enjoy the best ´´rabo de toro´´ dish in Ronda. My husband is a big fan of oxtail stew, and he said the oxtail dish here is the best he´s ever had, even better than his mom´s cooking (don´t tell her he said that)... coming from someone who would never admit that anything is better than his own mom´s cooking. We also enjoyed their light but filling house mixed salad to accompany the rabo de toro dish.
There is so much history about Don Pedro Romero, the first matador in Ronda, written and shown by photos all over the restaurant walls. The service was amazing! The servers were attentive and always checked on us. They had a great selection of wine as well. Ask for their recommendation on Ronda´s wine (vino tinto) to pair with the ´´Rabo de Toro´´. We also had the ´piononos con licor de naranja for dessert, with our coffee. The server would probably recommend the almond cake, which is supposed to be Ronda´s typical dessert. But since we´ve been to Granada and had ´´piononos´´ there (was told that it was Granada´s local typical dessert), so we ordered this instead. WOW!!! You´ll have to try it to understand what we experienced, we just can´t describe it. Especially enjoyed with coffee after dinner. The server was so nice he gave both of us shots of this yellow liqueur that is commonly enjoyed with coffee by the locals in Ronda. Sorry, we forgot the name of the liqueur. Ask for it anyways when you´re at any restaurant in Ronda. You will also see the same bottle sold in all of the shops in Ronda.
FYI - we were dressed casually and still got good service, but we expect that people or at leat the locals dress up to come here, the table settings are so nice and proper. read more
