Respect to Jim R. (review below) from my hometown--Motown Philly's back again!!!
So we got, pretty much, what Jim R. got, plus a couple more. But I think they screwed up our mushrooms b/c Jim's didn't look like ours... more below...
Indoor and outdoor seating. It was chilly when we were there, so we sat inside. The place was empty when we arrived, and totally packed (as in standing-room, only) when we left. They got SLAMMED! We hit them just in time!
FOOD:
Pinco de Mar y Tiera (land and sea kebab) not really as described, just shimp, but it was flavorful. Not the best we had.
Pinco de Cordero con miel de cana (lamb kebab with honey) tender, flavorful lamb, very good. The lamb I had in Rota was too gamey tasting, but this lamb was great, had a good grilled-meat taste. YUM!
Carrillada de Cerdo Estofada (stew of pork cheek). My husband thought this was AWESOME!!! Deep, rich, meaty flavor. Very tender, like extremely rich stew!
Langostinos Curry, again, good but no stand-out in any way.
Queso de Cabra con Cebollas Caramelizadas EXTREMELY GOOD! So tasty. I was afraid the onions would be too sweet but they were perfect, and the goat cheese was amazing. Not too mild, not too strong, the perfect tang against the sweet onions. YUM!!!!
I am not a big croquette fan, but I was up for the authentic regional tapas experience. This was my second Flamenquín in Ronda, basically a ham and cheese croquette. The one I had the night before at La Niña Adela was smothered in sauce, which really helped because the ham tends to get dry in a croquette. Taberna serves the croquette dry, so, well, it was a little dry.
The Champiñones Rellenos (stuffed mushrooms) were apparently also done as a croquette (???). Not sure if they served us the wrong thing or if this was really it? The croquette we got was mostly stuffed with spinach, so it is hard to say. Jim R.'s photo shows a croquette with mushrooms in it and no spinach, so my hunch is this was the kitchen's bad.
Leche Frita was a custardy cake, kind of like a boiled junket. Typical Spanish flavor with the custard texture against carmel and cinnamon garnishes. Very good!!!!!!
Mousse de la Casa was SOOOOOO good! Rich and creamy chocolate mousse, with thick chocolate shell on top, like quality Euro chocolate. Absolute YUM!
SERVICE:
Our server, Juan Carlos, was super nice, and very attentive. We asked his suggestions and he was helpful about everything. Awesome service! He was also really grateful when we asked him to add a tip. The Spanish really appreciate American-style tips!
Total for all this was just 27€, then 33€ with tip we added. read more
