She has a great "bedside manner:" friendly, easy to talk to, knowledgeable. I never feel rushed when she's with us (even if the office is clearly very busy). I love that Dr. Tomkins is open to and even suggests natural interventions before chemical ones. She is helpful in creating a modified vaccine schedule, and knows about alternative medicine. I've also seen Dr. Coffey at the office (Ball Sq. Family Health), and was very comfortable with him also. He is the only "Dr. Sears approved" doctor in the area! We ended up having to go to the parking garage down the street. When we walked back to Mass General Imaging, there were two valet workers sitting inside claiming they didn't see us. It is hard to see if you are looking at your phone instead of the door. My mother was taken right in back because it was 7:45am. Luckily the parking garage is free for the first three hours so hopefully we will be back to our car in time after my mother's MRI. Not happy.

The best doctor in the world…read more I recently moved from Boston to New York and the only thing I miss in Boston (besides Centre Street Cafe in JP) is Dr. Menon. Dr. Menon is always willing to spend as much time as needed. He continuously asks me if there's any other issues I want to bring up, to the point where I feel like I have to make stuff up! But it's actually really good because there were things I didn't think were a big deal but they actually were. He communicates important stuff to me himself--for example, after getting my blood work results, he asks me to come into the office to talk to him instead of just mailing me the results or having his secretary call me. Dr. Menon also works really hard--keeps long hours and I think he even works on Saturdays. He sincerely cares about his patients. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for a doctor in Union Square. Or even if you don't live near Somerville, he would be well worth the hike!

However, I had a recent negative experience with a PA-C following an injury. I had gone to an urgent care center where they took x-rays. I had tried to get an appointment with my PCP, but he was booked. So I saw the PA-C instead (sidenote, there's another PA-C that I have seen in the past, and she is great.). I brought the xrays in with me. She did not examine me. I sat in a chair as she typed away on the computer. She did not look at my xrays. She told me that I should see Orthopedics. I get that, but can you at least check out why I came to see in you the first place? This meant another week in pain with no clear treatment plan. So frustrating.

Patients are assigned a nurse and are told they cannot see the supervising doctor. As a veteran with a disability, I was treated poorly, and they didn't even check my allergy list. You will wait for endless hours, only to be sent home with a bill. I strongly advise avoiding this place and its fake positive reviews. I filed formal complaints, but the hospital ignored them and sent me to collections. They are a scam, and it makes me sad because they used to be a great hospital system.

On Saturday I went to my pharmacist and asked her if there was anything I could take to help with the symptoms and pain I was having. She said you need to see a Doctor don't wait til Monday. So I went to MGH Medical Walk-IN-Unit on Sunday May 1, 2011. My symptoms were fever, sever pounding headaches which seemed worst than having a migraine,dizziness, stomach pain, chills, unable to swallow, pain running down my legs and unable to eat or sleep for four days. I waited at MGH for about 2 hours at which time I saw a Dr Herb Lin who I found to be rude and unprofessional. You talk about " Patients Rights And Responsibilites" If all you need is a computer to diagnose someone than I can do that because that is what Dr Lin did. (Do you think Doctors are on Facebook) I sat there while he typed away as his computer only to take a quick look at my throat then made his diagnosis. A real doctor would have check my glands, my stomach, my head, my legs. You would think with such a prompt diagnosis that there should only be a 10 minute wait as it seems Dr Lin must be getting paid by the number a patients he see's. This really puts a bad taste in my mouth. I not saying this is a bad place but at least stay away from Dr Herb Lin.

It's always super frustrating when a doctor listens to your first 5 words, comes up with a conclusion (no matter how correct it may be), and then spends the rest of the session and your words reinforcing their opinion of that conclusion. It's a basic failure of the scientific method. You don't skew and cherrypick the data to follow your initial conclusion, like in middle school science class. You look at all the data first, and then come up with possible conclusions. Dr. Kwo passes this acid test with five stars. Not only was she kind and attentive while listening to my descriptions, she also made me privy to her thought process and helped me rule out any serious concerns by patiently explaining each and every single one. As if this is not stellar enough, today I phoned the primary care office with an urgent question while feeling very sick and had to resort to leave a message at the front desk for her. Getting an appointment would have taken too long. Just an hour later she called me back, and answered my questions on the phone for a whole 15 minutes! When I thanked her, she casually replied "Oh sure, there's no way we were going to let you go through that by yourself". I think that sums it up nicely. Primary care, like teaching, is one of those things where being a good academic is very necessary but not sufficient by itself. You also need a healthy dose of understanding, empathy, care and compassion. Dr Kwo has both, with a healthy dose of common sense too. I don't know if she plans to keep doing primary care after her residency, but I sure hope she does for my own selfish purposes :)
