I'd give this place one star, but they were nice people, so I add one more. When I was growing up, I went here for my first 17 years between 1982 and 1999, I believe.
My biggest problem at the age of 5 was I was 20 pounds heavier than every kid I knew. Ages 1-3 I wasn't that big, I got chunky as I reached age 4. I got called fat. I had nobody to talk to to help me lose weight. This is where this place fails is that area. Every year, I'd wait to see the doctors every July for my yearly visit with my parents (they were so old-fashioned and ALWAYS had to make it on their vacation because we never went anywhere out of the Merrimack Valley). So here's what happened around 1990 and then in 1991 when I was in gradeschool, being called "fat" or "fattest boy in class" or anywhere I went. And really, I wasn't that fat. 20 pounds overweight was not that fat. There were kids much bigger...
ME: "Doctor, help me, I need to lose weight. I see advertisements for Slim Fast. Nestle's Sweet Success. Diet pills. What can you give me?"
DOCTOR AVILA/DOCTOR LERMIN: "Uh, exercise. Uh...maybe see a nutritionist."
Like that was gonna help me. We went to one, that same day we went to Salisbury beach and had a cookout with lots of food, then went to the center that night and I ate stuff I shouldn't have.
Each year following that, I would ask them without really pleading, and they'd say the same thing. They saw me getting bigger each year. 20-30 pounds heavier. I was 77 pounds when I was 5, I was 100 pounds when I was 8, I was 200 pounds when I was 13. They did not care one bit. By the time I finished highschool, I was 250. They were never concerned for my weight affecting my body.
Then, I believe they recommended Leo Lane, for my adult doctor, a quack who told me the same thing about my weight. Sure, I chose to eat, but if I was a doctor I would have advised patients who were fat or didn't like to exercise the alternatives such as "fat camp" or "gyms" or "saunas/steamrooms" I learned all this by avoiding Dr. Lane. He would not help me either. I saw him when I was 18 and had sleep apnea and was 260 pounds, the year later 280, the year later 300...Then I got HYPNOSIS, lost from 300 pounds down to 150, and he was concerned I was hurting my body. Well, at least I lost the weight, eh? I did it by learning my own way how to rid myself of it. These doctors did not know any ways to help me, just exercise and a nutritionist, and none of it helped because my parents were also obese and did not care and set bad examples for me. I would always ask for a pill and they said no or that I couldn't take any and it would make me "sick" or hurt me. Really? None of the over the counter pills did that to me, they gave me the energy I lacked, and after taking them before any fatty meals, I didn't explode and I lost weight with them and was able to exercise more on the tredmills, et. As weight came off, I stayed on longer.
But other than my health/weight problems, the place was okay. It was getting old and needed updating, and around the time I turned 18 and was too old to go anymore in 2000, they updated and built on. Dr. Avilla and Dr. Lermin are nice but they were not good when it came to my health, weight-wise. That's where this place loses serious points.
I saw Dr. Avilla in summer of 2002. I was 280 pounds and getting my tonsils out. I ran into him at Holy Family Hospital with my Mom. He was not concerned with how much weight I gained in 3 years after going to an adult doctor. He just said "What's he doing here today?" And I told him I had sleep apnea and was getting my tonsils out to see if it would help, it didn't, and then I put on another 20 in the following year and was doing worse, that's when I changed my whole diet, exercise, and researched ways how to "sweat" to lose weight and inches online.
I would not recommend this place, but they are not mean people, they were always nice to me and my family, just never helped obese kids the way they should be helped. Hopefully someday all doctors do. I really wanted to see them at least 3 times a year to ask them how I could lose weight, but they only wanted to see me once a year and they had very little to offer me for advice, just the typical eat healthy and exercise, but with parents who were both obese and never exercised and no access to gyms, saunas, and other stuff that I learned of years later on how to lose weight, these doctors lose serious points. Sweating was the best way for me to lose weight, they could have recommended me to get a sauna of some sort/Hypnosis with Jerry Valle.
I know I'm sounding harsh, but it was hard to go through ages 4-17 as obese, then get recommended to another doctor who saw me gain more ages 18-20 before I put a stop to it and changed my eating/exercising habits, took diet pills/trimspa, and had more energy and learned new ways to sweat/lose inches and water weight that also took pounds off. I can bet thin kids would rate this place 5/5 though. w read more
