I stumbled upon pedals at a farmer's market. I really enjoyed the juice, but had completely forgotten about them having store fronts until I dug out the bottle to figure out how to get more juice! I found the location in Durham to visit. I love the sweet green juice, and tried to the apple juice the other day. They're a bit pricey, but delicious. The smoothies were also great! Little overpriced but everything was plant based. Mocha espresso drink was good. I may not be back just because I'm partial to dunks and they seemed slow and I just don't know if this place is my vibe but it had phenomenal ratings and I felt the need to check it out! Bike-themed and owner seems to own one more coffee shop location as well & I will say the coffee wasn't bitter at all. As a former barista, I'd reckon that they clean their machines often. Pedals has been on my radar because it comes up on Yelp "coffee" searches for the Middletown area, but I'm not usually in Durham. Today, we traveled route 17 from lunch towards Clinton Crossing and had a chance to stop. Not surprisingly, the decor is bicycle-themed. Perhaps that means this is a popular area for biking and/or the owners like biking. In any event, the inside is cute and service was good. I ordered a black iced coffee and a pre-bottled blue lemonade. Given that Pedals brands itself as more of a juice and smoothie place, the coffee was surprisingly good. Well above average for CT. Smooth. No aftertaste issues. Kind of a deep chocolate flavor profile. Probably a blend and/or beans from Central and/or South America as opposed to something fruitier from an African coffee-producing country. I wouldn't say it was a top tier CT iced coffee, but you don't get much better outside a great coffee shop and/or bakery that serves coffee. The blue lemonade was too sweet for me, which is often my experience. After I iced and watered it down at home, it was more to my liking. I glanced at the Smoothie and Juice Menu. I frequent the Pedals location in New Haven on York St and the smoothies are always so good. Today, we tried Pedals in Durham for the very first time. The person I was with has never been to any location. I don't know if it was an off day or maybe new staff, but the smoothies were both awful. They had a strange taste including an aftertaste, something I never experienced at the New Haven location. I rotate between 4 different smoothie flavor options, so the ones we tried today are both ones I have tried many times before. I did try the other person's smoothie after I discovered mine was not good today, thinking maybe just one of them was made poorly, but they both tasted bad. If we hadn't driven off and had other places to be, I would have brought them back inside. It's too bad, because Pedals is usually spot on. read more

Quality ingredients, friendly staff, tasty selection and ample indoor/outdoor seating. What more could you ask for? They are happy to customize any smoothie which is great! My husband loved the paleo smoothie - he replaced the almond butter with kale. The prices are in line with other smoothie places that focus on quality ingredients. I first found out about Pedals at a farmers market in Cromwell. The owner was there and shared about her organic products and her stores. The main store is in Durham. There are two more stores in New Haven. I went to the shop in Durham. First, it's a nice area with lots of horse farms. There lots of free parking. The shop is really beautiful. There's a bicycle theme. The ladies working there were making juice and they very really helpful. I had a long trip, and I asked for them to pack what I got. If your or your children have allergies, I would avoid this place. I bought my three year old toast and once I got it, I saw it had more ingredients than your standard toast. So I asked if it had sesame and there was no one there who had any idea what was actually in the toast. Not knowing the ingredients of your food is malpractice. Won't be back. read more

My friend and I stopped in on our way to the shore area. What a cute place! There are cool bike wheels around the inside as it is a cycling theme. We ordered a smoothie to share since we just wanted a little something. They prepared, and kindly split it for us into two cups. It was a peanut butter, chocolate, banana smoothie. Very good for a healthy green juice. Not too earthy and "green" I don't think. The amount of each ingredient blends together well so even if you're new or not fully vested in the green life, I think you'd still like this green juice! If you're a health nut and you're all about fitness and low sugar, low carb, gluten free, whatever it may be, this is the place for you. I'm all for eating healthy but if you're used to places like Fresh Monkey and Emerald City smoothies, this place probably won't be for you. The Nutella peanut butter banana smoothie I bought tasted like everything but that. I mean, it's extremely healthy which is nice but it tastes like chalk to me. So, proceed with caution.
