Was excited to try this restaurant, was there in afternoon not busy at all, Was promptly seated and order taken, waitress brought food and we never seen her again, had to finally get up and ask for check, no refills either.. The food is overpriced and in small portions, a $18, 5" circle chicken fried steak plate should have two sides, not one small side. By the time it is breaded and cooked well done on the edges you got about five good bites out of it. The Cobb salad we ordered was $15 and it was presented nicely and had fresh avocado but - No Corn- in a Cobb salad, had little tiny pieces of turkey that were far and few between. No bread, no crackers. Would not try this place again. Felt a tad robbed when we left after paying $38 for this meal and no service. read more

Casual place. The website allows you to order but doesn't notify the staff. If you want to order ahead, make sure you call. When we showed up to pick up our order, the hostess, an older blonde woman, was very rude and dismissive before throwing her hands in the air and getting the manager. The manager was very kind and got our order going very quickly. When I asked the hostess how long she thought it would take she said "I don't know, I'm just the hostess. It's going to take some time". Yeah obviously. When I asked for a range or estimate she said "I don't know, I'll just say 15 minutes but I'm making that number up". She was so rude. I will preface my review by sharing that there are limited options for dining in this area and I know they are likely doing their absolute best! We dined in on a Saturday evening and the ambiance was nice. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and I love the gift shop and upstairs area that help give you something to tour around and view before/after your meal. There is a ton of street parking and it was very easily accessible. Our servers were very kind and kind of tag teamed our dinner from start to finish. They were pretty busy towards the end of the evening and that caused some delays in refills/checkins. I ordered the wasabi and pecan crusted salmon, which unfortunately arrived over cooked. I got veggies on the side which were pretty good. My fiancé ordered the steak and mashed potatoes. The potatoes were pretty salty, and the steak was missing the béarnaise listed on the menu. We asked for it and they brought a cold side of it in a sauce cup which wasn't as enjoyable. I have heard this restaurant can be a huge hit so this may have been an off day or experience! Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after walking around downtown for awhile. Inside is very nicely decorated and there is a side boutique attached to the restaurant that you can look at while you wait to be seated. There are several areas to be seated in, booths along the wall, upstairs seating and tables downstairs in the middle area. Our party of 6 fit perfectly in a booth. The food was large portions and very filling. We went w mozzarella sticks and wings and queso for appetizers, for entrees we did the chicken fried steak, the chicken bacon pasta, the Mac and cheese, I also tried the soup of the day which was supposed to be a butternut squash and sausage soup. Food was good and everyone was satisfied. Only thing I would change would be the cocktails. Tasted more like mock tails and not worth the money. read more

Last night, we decided to visit the Pecan House in San Saba, even though it's an hour's drive from our home. Before we left the house, we looked at the menu online. My wife decided on a filet and a baked potato; I was planning on having the ribeye. Upon arrival, no one was interested in seating us until, finally, an extremely grumpy lady wearing an old, ragged T-shirt and carrying a large Sonic drink cup around all night told us to follow her. I guess that must have been the manager, since on several occasions I heard her referring to the staff as "hey". We ordered the burned tips and seafood fondue. The burned tips were actually pretty good. The seafood fondue was a COLD, tasteless blob of cream cheese. We didn't eat that, and it was taken off the bill. I'm really looking forward to the filet with baked potato, but we were told neither was available. (6:30 PM). We both ordered the ribeye, with fries for me and loaded mashed potatoes for my wife. The fries were cold, undercooked, and limp. The steaks were cooked medium rare (as requested), but so salty that they made our eyes water. Literally half the steaks were made up of large blobs of fat. After eating around the fat blobs, we ate a small amount of meat and had the rest of the meat to go to give to our dogs. Our evening put a big lid on our mood. Upon arrival at home, we scraped the salt off the meat and gave some pieces to our dogs. A little later, we were going to give the dogs some more, and only then noticed a very foul smell coming off the meat, so we threw it out. Neither one of us slept comfortably through the night, not feeling well. In the morning, both dogs had the runs. I intend to call the health department --obviously, the meat was rotten--all this "wonderful" experience for $125+. Never again, I would advise you to stay far away from this place!! read more

First time trying this restaurant. The service here was terrible and the food also!! First when we walked in there was nobody to welcomed us in! Some grumpy lady finally came to seat us. We ordered a seafood fondue appetizer that came cold and a big clump. When our steaks came they were fatty and very salty! My husband's fries were uncooked and cold. Our waitress never came back to ask how things were, just kept apologizing for the bad appetizer. Then it took forever for her to come back with the bill. It looked like a kids plate and the gravy was warm in spots and almost froze in spots. My wife had catfish that very bland and my daughter had a burger. We all ordered fries thinking they were always good but they changed the fries obviously and I guess well done means half cooked mushy grossness. My chicken fry tasted a little funny but I thought it was probably the batter since I had not had it before, my daughter ate about half the burger and said it just tasted weird. I tried a very small bite and it smelled and tasted like what I can only explain as a wet dog smells. So after being sick all night here you go. If you wanna waste good money to sit and wonder if you have a waitress and eat old food then this is the place. Very sad . It's a really cool building and could be such a great place. read more

First time here! Don't live in San Saba, but it's halfway between me and my parents. What a surprise to find this gem in small town America. Atmosphere is warm and inviting, service is with a smile and the food is outstanding. Waitress told us they grind their own steak for the chopped steak. And man oh man was it deliciously tender. I have been here multiple times, and I am finally writing a review. I have yet to sit in the dining room because I tend to head straight upstairs for a toddy and a nosh. First, the remodel on the building was first rate. It has that small down chic that most places can't pull off. This was accomplished by going down to the bones and not screwing it up with a lot of flourish. In other words, it's cool and legit. I like siting upstairs because I can finish off my work day with good WiFi and power under the bar. If you are easing out of town early, but still need to wrap up before the weekend, head up to the bar, you will be golden. On top of that, there is a full bar and 12 beers on tap. I have liked some dishes more than others. In particular the pork belly is good. But, what prompted me to finally review this place is the chicken noodle and dumpling soup. If food were laying under grandma's handmade quilt in front of a fire, this is it. The roux is thick and flavorful. The chicken is tender and the dumplings retain their molecular integrity. In the words of a friend of mine from New Orleans, it's good enough to make you slap your mamma. I write this because it was only the special today. I could go on and on... but here it is in a Nutshell ( or in this part of the world a pecan shell) as this little town is the pecan capital of the world This young man left such a superior lasting impression from the first visit, when he was not our waiter... my wife said oh you must be happy with that. Happy is not the world... perhaps profound disbelief would suite the situations best. Pecan House Grill is a new restaurant in San Saba, Texas. It has an upscale dining feel in this small Texas town. The ambience and lighting are well done and add an upscale feel to the establishment. The entire interior is beautiful. We came here on a Sunday. I'm not sure if it's every Sunday, but on this specific Sunday they had a limited menu. Today, they had three entrées available; fried chicken, pot roast, and lasagna. A local told us that the lasagna was really good but we did not try it. I wanted fried chicken and my wife got pot roast. It also came with two sides. I ordered mashed potatoes and green beans. So did she. As far as the entrées go, the fried chicken was good. The batter was crisp and the chicken was cooked perfectly. However, it was a little too salty for my palate. The pot roast on the other hand was absolutely delicious. I snuck a taste of my wife's entrée and immediately wished I had ordered the same thing. The pot roast also comes smothered in gravy which was also fabulous. If you happen to be there on a day when pot roast is on the menu, order it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I will say that the bread that they bring to the table before and during your meal was not good. It tasted like store-bought dinner rolls and needs to be drastically improved. Some of them even tasted stale and needed to be fed to the ducks down at the local city park. It would be better if they did not serve bread versus serving what they served us on this day. The wait staff left a little to be desired. Granted, this is a small town and the pool of waitstaff is probably limited, especially those with experience in the arena that this restaurant is trying to fulfill. Our specific waitress needed to drastically improve her listening skills. She also needed to follow up on our request for additional items to be brought to the table. Again, some of this will improve with experience but they have a long way to go to get to an acceptable level. As of now, they are below the industry standard. Bottom line - Given the good and the bad combined, I will give the food a 3-star rating. The wait staff needs to improve but again I think some of it is due to the fact that it is a small town and they're limited on how many of their population has table-waiting experience. Pack your patience when dealing with the staff. I won't ding them too badly yet. An overall 3-star experience. Bon appétit. read more

In San Saba for a golf tournament and this place was where we all first met up for dinner. If you follow me and my reviews you know what my favorite steak places are. Well tonight I just added this one to the list. I had the aged 12oz ribeye medium-rare Pittsburgh style charred! First off it was the biggest 12oz ribeye I have ever had. It was aged to perfection and absolutely cooked to perfection ! The service at this restaurant is first class top to bottom. It was so worth the 3 hour drive and no matter how I play in the golf tournament I have already won! Only mistake I made was not taking a picture of that gorgeous steak. A beautiful gem of a restaurant located in San Saba, Texas. This is my third time dining at PHG and the full experience gets better and better every time I come. Not to mention I chose this restaurant as where to host my engagement party! Make sure to start off the night at The Papershell Bar. It's located upstairs with plenty of seating! Their drink menu is great, with delicious specialty cocktails. I highly recommend trying the Papershell Old Fashioned and the Fahrenheit 151. The bartender provided us with great service, so make sure to tip Maddie well if you get her! Once your table is ready in the main dining room they'll have you make your way down to be seated. Their dining room looks like it was designed right out of an interior design magazine- it couldn't be better. The lighting and the ceiling panels are my favorite touches. As appetizers I ordered the Texas Brisket Queso and the Pork Belly Burnt Ends. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed by either. For my main I ordered the Filet Mignon which comes with a side of mashed potatoes and seasoned vegetables. You'd be doing yourself a disservice though if you missed out on trying some of their other sides. In the number of times I've dined here I have tried every side and find myself struggling to pick a favorite! For any asparagus or brussel sprout lovers this is your place! Our waiter Cam was excellent and was extremely attentive. He made sure our cocktails and water stayed full throughout the dinner checking on us at just the right times. Lastly, don't forget to head into the shop called The Pantry located to the left when you walk into PHG. They have delicious treats, spices and seasonings, and even kitchen home decor!
