They didn't ever contacted me to let me know if her name was pulled or not. I went to the school to check and the lady at the front office was kind of kicking me out of the school saying: if you didn't receive a phone call from us this mean that there is no spot for her. I asked her to check for my daughter's name and she kept repeating the same sentence loudly in the most rude way without even bother herself to check the name list. The school is new and had it's first start to finish class of seniors graduate this year. The down side is no transportation and no sports. This is not an issue for my family. Any sport or extracurricular activity your student desires is available through nearby ( Reed) or zoned Washoe County high school. I know my daughter would not be able to handle the large size at our zoned high school. The special education teacher is awesome and the administration works closely with families to address their student's needs. I would highly recommend any family check out this school because the education and environment is excellent.

This is our third year at Hunsberger and we love our school! Molly Lauf, our Principal, is wonderful with the children and is always looking for ways to improve the school. The Hunsberger PTA puts on several family-friendly events throughout the year and purchases much of the state of the art technology that the school district does not provide. In addition to purchasing equipment, the PTA also supports several programs that are not offered or paid for through the district, such as Foss kits, Kindness Enrichment programs and art. The Hunsberger art program offers all students opportunities to learn about artists and different mediums such as watercolors, oil pastels, acrylics as well as ceramic art. I love seeing all of the hallways lined with the art the kids have created! Not only is the school itself great, but the parents, many of whom volunteer their time on a regular basis are fantastic and always willing to help each other and look out for each others children. I am SO glad that I chose to live where I do, and part of that decision was based on the schools we are zoned for! It has gotten very crowded since it became a SWAS site as the siblings of SWAS attend as well. We saw the K class half day become a full day option, with 30 kids in the full day. One teacher and an aid....way crowded throughout. Our son was too distracted with a big class, so we were discouraged, but by years end our K student was reading end of first grade readers! They do group kids by level of learning even within a class. Our 2nd grader was in a class of 36 kids, with two teachers, but it was way large. They did again tiered learning, so he did great too. The parents make the school awesome.

While he was happy at the other school, I feel L&L does a better job at helping instill morals. The other school felt that things like teaching them to apologize would hurt their self esteem, but how else do they learn to take responsibility for their actions? He's better behaved, communicating well and very happy. We are happy with the level of attention & education he receives and all the teachers are very loving. I only wish we could have started him there from the beginning and could continue on after kindergarten!

I've tried to avoid typing this for a long time. Kindergarten was wonderful! My son learned so much…read moreand gained so much confidence. First grade was a nightmare. My sons teachers mother passed away at the beginning of the year and he had a bunch of substitutes the rest of the year. Second grade we had a serious problem with bullying. Even came to the school go deal with it. Mrs Brandt basically called me a liar. My son had taken his robot for show and tell and it was destroyed by some of his classmates. The teacher never even told me about it. I think it was 2 days later when he snuck the toy out of the classroom and told me about it. Following that incident his teacher threw away all of his belongings and the actual principal Mrs van tress helped us with that. He ended up getting a new teacher for the last 7 weeks of school. Mrs galatti. She was an angel. Too bad it was only 7 weeks. Third grade was amazing. Absolutely amazing! We had Mrs. Sherbondy. She was just so amazing. She really helped him grow and blossom. She stayed on top of his education and we talked weekly. I wish they could clone her. And on to 4th grade... we were told that he was getting the best teacher in the school. That's a joke. And she's lucky I'm not filing a lawsuit. Mrs. Hensley. At first glance she seems wonderful. Really nice lady. Then there's the classroom. No desks. But there were bean bags, video game chairs and one flow height table. For 28 kids. No desks. So needless to say he was reallllly distracted. Also the same bully from 2nd grade sat directly next to him. So that was fun. So I went in weekly. Spent countless hours of tutoring outside of school not to mention money... and then we have our parent teacher conference. This woman literally asked me to put my son back in the 3rd grade. 3 months into the year she wants to move him. Then she tells me I need to look into getting him medicated. This woman is not a doctor. She's a teacher. He had been struggling and we were getting him help for that, but she literally suggested meds. Said he probably has add and that he should be on something. And that she has seen it enough to know. Cool. Leave that to a DOCTOR! Also, he had good grades on 3rd grade. So why would I need to put him back in 3rd grade? So I tell her I'm thinking of moving him to a charter school. And then she tells me he should go to her friend Primms school. I'm not really sure how I kept my cook through all of this. But I managed. My husband and I left and immediately enrolled him in Honors Academy of Literature. Which is in Reno. Clear across town. We moved to this neighborhood specifically for Van Gorder. I'm just so bummed. On a bright side we love his new school. He now has all A's and he's happy. They actually enforce their no bullying policy there. I wish i could have gone to his office about things going on, but after everything that has happened I just decided it wasn't worth it. Sorry for the long review. I'm just hoping this doesn't happen to anyone else. I'm giving 2 stars only because of his 3rd grade teacher.
