Academy of Arts, Careers, and Technology

Penny R first got me involved in the Carson High culinary program 10 plus years ago…read more When the opportunity came up this spring to attend a fund raiser for the AACT program in Reno, I jumped on it. The Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology, AACT, is an career technical education school within the Washoe County School District. It gives students an alternative opportunity to help them decide on various paths to secondary education. There are eight academies in the program- communications arts and media, culinary, teaching and training, engineering, fire science, high school of business, medical, and natural resources and animal sciences. In April, a team of sophomore culinary students won first place in the state competition in Las Vegas and presented a fund raiser to help get them to nationals. The winning team with the support of their fellow classmates and the hospitality class presented an incredible six course dinner in the cafe at the AACT campus. I have dined around the world at various levels of restaurant and street cuisine, these kids did a phenomenal job- in quality and execution of the plates, hospitality, and cooperation. What 10th grader have you met that knows how to prepare roasted figs, pomegranate molasses, and burrata mousse; beef tartare; French rack of lamb with couscous; branzino and bulgar; and blueberry limoncello tiramisu. Little lone know what they are ? I have the greatest respect for these students and their teacher/mentors, for these are our future chefs. And I expect to be well fed ! The school does have a cafe open to the public on Thursdays from noon to 1 pm at the AACT Restaurant, 380 Edison Way, Reno.

My updated review is primarily for the Culinary program that runs the AACT Restaurant. The Chefs…read more(teachers) do a great job with the kids in teaching them the ins and outs of culinary. I am amazed at the AACT Restaurant! The food is always tasty, very reasonably priced and changes every week. The kids take turns creating the menu, doing the work to establish pricing, learn to work the kitchen, as well as opportunities to earn some money and experience as servers to the dining area. These young adults are always very professional, and polite. Great skills being learned here. I love that this is open to the public. I hope that more people hear about it and support the students and the program. The restaurant is only open select Thursdays, so be sure to visit their website to see the dates and make a reservation. The menu changes each time. You can see the menus ahead of time on their website: https://www.aacttrailblazers.com/culinary-and-hospitality-academy.html . While pricing is not listed on the site, it is always reasonable and very tasty. I have been several times now, and my meal has never been more than $15 (app, entree, desert). The tables are typically decorated with flower arrangements made by students and are for sale as well. Note: Cash only.

This school definitely has history, as evidenced by the proudly hung flags showing how many times…read morethe sports teams have made it to state championships. There's something nice about visiting old buildings, but add a little Reno pride to it and it only gets better. I was in the main gymnasium for most of the day, volunteering as a mock interviewer for juniors who were practicing their interview skills. The students here are diverse, in terms of their socioeconomic background, but all are respectful and exert a very nice level of maturity that is representative of a good school. Overall, it's a nice place and a school I wouldn't be ashamed of sending my kids to, making it worthy if five stars.

As a parent of a sophomore of this school I'm very appalled by the things I've seen happen. My son…read morecomplains about if you're not an athlete at this school then the faculty just doesn't care. He came in struggling with different subjects and just got pushed aside. He asked for help and the teachers make him feel less than. I believe it was his math teacher who implied that he was "retarded". Moving through the school year he has displayed behavior problems as well. Who wouldn't, the adults he trust to guide him make him feel worthless so who wouldn't act out. I have dealt with mr Chubb calling me telling me that my child was outside being a nuisance when my kid was actually home in bed for the day. I know that kids will be kids and tell there side but a few things have made me believe that these teachers are indeed corrupt and show severe favoritism to certain groups. My recent experience is one of the students stole my sons backpack containing $400 and his iPhone X. My son tried defending his property and not only doesn't have his property back but he now as a black eye as well. I've left 3 messages for mr Chubb to call me back and he has yet to respond. This school is a joke and since attending this school they have managed to dim the light my son once shined. His self esteem and confidence has gone down the drain. Thanks for "nurturing" my son's young mind Reno High. He will continue his high school education elsewhere.
