The dog park had their official opening a couple months ago and finally put a sign on each side…read morethat tells ya which side is for the small or big dog. Unlike our first experience here with the puppers, there weren't any guard dogs to check and see if your dog has a "sticker" to verify if your dogs vaccinations are up to date. Each side has a water fountain for the pups, a doggie bag station to clean up your pups business and a trash can. Along with a round table and a bench. Most of the dogs we've seen at the park are pretty friendly as well as the owners. The only gripe I have is the pet owners that leave their cig butts on the ground...the trash can is NOT that far away...not to mention it's next to the exit door.

Having a dog park like this in the desert is a blessing! There are wonderful trees for shade and…read morepotty bags right at the entrance. The people that go here are all so friendly and pretty good at watching over their dogs. A lot of people have also left their dog toys here for all to share (really, how great is that!) so if you forgot your ball at home you don't have to go back for it! AND the dog park has dog water fountain bowls too! There are occasional pipe leaks that cause big mud puddles that the dogs are inevitably going to end up in - but the amount of energy the dogs burn off while playing and their HUGE smiles make it so worth it.

It was sunset on the trail... I had never been to Ridgecrest before…read more An important little place in the middle of a desert. As for this trail hike, we took a moderate one up the mountain to the peak to sit and take in the views on all sides. It really depends who you go with. The desert can be a lonely place. Especially as the day comes to a close, it is so quiet here, it could be just you and your thoughts. Sobering. We saw some rabbits and lizards. Be on the watch for coyotes and rattlesnakes. The steep trek down I thought, was harder than going up. Make sure you have really good hiking shoes. If you come here on a whim let's say, sandals or flip flops are not going to cut it. Bring plenty of water, very hot in summer and keep in mind that there are no bathrooms here. Please pick up all your trash. This was a beautiful, clean place. The parking area felt safe and fortunately for us, there were not a lot of people there on this given Sunday. I would go back in a heartbeat. The summit views were spectacular and I always welcome the exercise and time to reflect. It can also feel very romantic. I love the desert.

There were a couple of trail heads, the one behind the college having a parking lot close to the road. I walked a bit to see what was there and took some photos. I'm sure it would be more interesting the further out a person could go. It reminded me of bike rides in a state forest in Florida and I'm sure a quicker view would be more interesting but less productive for photography.

Though this site gives some amazing history about the pinnacles I would not have known otherwise,…read morethe road to get here is very long, very rocky and in some places questionable if I should cross them. It was extremely hot even though it's April. I didn't walk around as the temps too high. The highlights - you cross over where the salt has dried from the lake ( wash your car as soon as you can as salt bad for it!), the beautiful scenery of the pinnacles (obviously) but the mountains behind them, the history lesson, the train cars sitting on the tracks was kinda fun and interesting and best of all the Navy flying planes doing test runs. Loved that. So hard to believe so much of this was under water and that where these were created. It's other worldly with how alive our planet is and constantly changing. It's free to come here but be warned about deep sand, very rocky roads and the heat. Bring water and have plenty of gas in the tank. There's nothing around for quite a ways.

Out of this world! Free admission but make sure the roads are in good shape. I drove out in an SUV…read moreand some parts of the road were a little sketchy. Once you arrive at the Pinnacles, you can hike up really close to see them first-hand. The pinnacles were created out of tufa ("porous rock formed as a deposit when springs interact with other bodies of water" per Wikipedia), when the area was under a lake. If you visit in spring, you'll see some wildflowers as well. Very interesting spot and worth a stop on your way to Death Valley. Highly recommended!
