I've been to pearl on a number of occasions and I've also attended their Thursday steak night (4/5, it was tasty!!) and their crab boil (did not eat any but I was told it was very good) but the real action is on weekends!! The DJs can be kinda meh 50% of the time but the bartenders are always friendly, fast, attentive and ofc very cute. Great place to go with your friends, almost completely women on weekends for dancing (as it should be.) I haven't gotten to try the taco truck yet but if you get out late at 2am when they close there is an amazing greasy smash burger place just a 2 block walk away. we were in Houston for a day and my girlfriend wanted to show me Peal Bar--an iconic lesbian bar. unfortunately it was a tuesday so only half of the bar was open...pearl's sister bar, Side Peace. it was karaoke night but we mainly sat out back in the lounge picnic chairs chatting. the bartenders were approachable and the easily accessible water station is a plus. they don't keep open tabs so you have to pay every time you order a drink, but that's not so bad. bathrooms were clean too! they closed a bit earlier than their hours posted, so we ended the night at Ninja Ramen across the street. read more

I came here with some friends on what started out as a quiet Friday night but quickly picked up by around 11 pm. Parking can be a challenge, but we were able to snag some street parking nearby. A few things that make this bar stand out to me: 1. Traffic light system: Each person that came in got a wristband, with green being available, yellow being "it's complicated" and red being taken. This is a great idea and more bars should adopt this policy! 2. Connection to Side Peace Bar: One side was playing Latin music hits, the other side was playing club bangers. Depending on the vibe and connected by a delightful outdoor backyard, you can truly choose your own adventure. I loved the flexibility and ambience of both bars. 3. Outdoor backyard: There were plenty of fun neon photo sign opportunities and other outdoor activities like arcade basketball, board games, and more in case you wanted a break from dancing in the club. 4. Mocktails/Cheap Alcohol: The Side Peace Bar had some not only tasty but also reasonably priced (less than $7) mocktails. Alcoholic drinks in both places were reasonably priced as well, and though I can't vouch for how strong they were, a cocktail less than $15 is a win nowadays. 5. Playlist: This is the first bar I've seen play both classic club bangers but also songs from Hannah Montana and early age Justin Bieber. They truly knew their target audience! Pearl Bar on Washington Avenue, is one of only 33 lesbian bars remaining in the United States as of June 2024. Of those 33 lesbian bars, there are 2 in Texas; only 1 in Houston. Pearl Bar was opened by Julie Mabry as a safe space for herself and her sister. This bar has been the go to for sapphics since its opening in 2013. Pearl Bar stands as one of the few safe havens awarded to specifically lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual women. While there are many gay bars that are more geared to gay men, finding women only spaces, or women focused spaces is becoming increasingly difficult. Pearl Bar stands as a major community space for sapphic women, and one of the few gay bars that host Drag King nights, which gives much needed attention to Drag Queens' less popular counterparts. This bar hosts many themed nights, especially around the holidays. They have had daily events all throughout October, including several costume contests and a Halloween party last Saturday. Given the current political climate regarding the unwarranted attack on LGBTQIA+ members of this society, places like gay bars are going to become increasingly important in building a community in times when so many of us are being threatened. In addition to the attacks on queer people, women as a whole are having their rights stripped away and are facing increasing hostility from those seeking to go back to a time before women and gays were seen as valid members of society. Lesbian bars, gay bars, and gaming bars are common places where queer people can meet up with others and gain a sense of community, which many historians have noted is an important aspect of surviving an increasingly hostile government. With so many bars having not survived the Covid shutdowns, it is amazing that we still have a lesbian bar that is accessible in a city with such a large LGBTQIA+ population. It is highly admirable that Pearl continues to be a resource for queer to be able to gather and celebrate their queerness with their community, especially in a heavily Republican state that has been focused on tearing down this community. This bar has thrived in spite of the attacks by the state to deny the bar business insurance for hosting drag shows, despite the bar having a 21 year minimum age limit. Pearl Bar was one of 10 LGBT+ businesses to be awarded a grant by Showtime and the Human Rights Organization to preserve the bar as a cultural landmark for the queer community. This bar was also featured on ROKU's documentary the "Lesbian Bar project," which focused on the remaining lesbian bars in America. Pearl Bar stands as a monument to the perseverance of lesbians and other queer women that refuse to step down in a society that treats them as if they weren't human. This bar has withstood the pandemic and the attacks on the rights and freedom of women, queers, drag performers, and the trans community, and they have no intention of backing down now. read more

Let me start by saying this place is the real deal. We started at Axelrad for drinks, and one of our Houstonite friends recommended me move on to the Pearl. I am so glad we did- when we walked in, it was delightful, and I immediately started with a frozen margarita, and my girlfriend got a t-shirt (they are SO cute!!). After a few minutes of just hanging out by the bar with my party of 5, a drag king show began. This was my first time at a drag king show, and it did not disappoint. It totally added a whole different layer of fun to our evening, and totally unexpected for a Wednesday night! The bar servers was all great, and we really enjoyed the vibes of the place. Pearl is a hidden gem in Houston. The bartenders are friendly and unpretentious, and the inside is loaded with vintage couches and cool art to look at. The outside patio is beautiful and feels much more organic than the other bars on Washington. To top it all off, the drinks are well priced and well made... this isn't the type of place that'll hit you with an $11 vodka soda. Stop by the Pearl bar the next time you're bar hopping on Washington. It is a lesbian bar, but my husband and I have always felt welcomed. We weren't happy with the lack of quality tonic water and made up Ginger ale (coke+sprite) but after a Facebook review the mgmt quickly apologized and has since repaid UA with complimentary drinks (and bought some ginger ale for me!) We always meet cool people here, the music videos and quirky decor is very entertaining and the music next door is a nice mix of genres for all demographics (opens sometime between 9-10 not quite clear on that as yet...) Manager says she trusts her bouncer because he has been there for 12 years but everyone makes mistakes. And he dropped the ball that night. I really only come here for steak night, so this review is pretty much for Tuesday nights only. There is nothing anyone could possible dislike about Pearl Bar. Well, the only thing would be the Texas heat when you're outside devouring the steak during steak night, but that's obviously beyond their control. I have become a regular here on Tuesday nights because well.. $10 for a huge steak, baked potato, and salad between 6-7 just can't be passed up. The restrooms are decent, it's cool inside, and there's a lot of space outside on the patio to chill. It's so good that I've actually driven from Katy to Pearl to eat alone during bad weather. I always tend to meet cool people here and the staff is super cool, so there's really no way you could feel uncomfortable if you arrive alone. There are normally good drink specials to help you wash down your dinner. Afterwards, there's drunk bingo and then karaoke later. Tuesdays are always great nights. There are literally hundreds of streaming services, radio stations on Pandora, play lists on Spotify, but they play the same music all the time!! The old Pearl Bar is back open! The grand opening was last night. This was the best patio in town back in the day so I am glad to see it open again. There have been some light renovations as far as the decor inside but overall the place has the same look as it used to. My only complaint would be the beer selection. This is a cool spot that makes you feel at home the moment you step in...although the steaks on the grill were enough of a draw. I won't say it was our first choice of the evening but it should have been with a 3 course steak dinner and a pint of ale special. My friend used to take me here a year ago and I loved it! I was figuring myself out -I still am tbh!- but it was nice to be surrounded by women and not worrying about what I was wearing, although one time there was a girl in a skin tight dress and some cute heels and I was just like damn girl can I sit with you?!
