Whenever I need some home maintenance or supply item, and want it locally, this is always my first stop. No parking hassles and no 15~20 minutes traipsing around some mega-store. Just in, grab it and go. While the younger staff is still learning, customer service has always been superior (and easily available) to the big box stores as well, especially from the long time employees/owner. Convenience here rules over any small price differences from large local or on-line; I'm not looking to purchase a pallet of anything. I want it; now, and I'd estimate 90~95% of the time I'm good. My father always brought me with him when he needed things. As a little kid I looked forward to the trip, its like a young boy in a candy shop. From folding pocketknives to big bins of nails that you buy by weight and who could forget the free popcorn! Always friendly and helpful, if they don't have it on had they would order it for you fast. Times have changed but not the kind of service you'll always get from the staff at Payton's. They Don't take returns if there's a mark on the receipt. Just a heads up if you want a return don't expect one and they won't tell you about that so u will be at a loss for money. Not happy with the service today read more

they claim they are open till five but more times than not I've come here with 5 to 10 minutes left before five and they are already closed. I assume they're making so much money. They don't need the business. It's a shame because it was a business. I would always go to instead of Home Depot because it was a smaller store and more community store but they don't seem to care about their community. They are nice people though. read more

I just happened to be in the neighborhood when I remembered that I needed some spackle. So I bee-bopped into Payton's Hardware store. Payton's is a relatively small, local hardware store. I found it to be quite a nice departure from the big box stores a la Home Depot and Lowes. There were a couple of regulars chit-chatting with the guys manning the cash registers. Reminded me of a hardware store that could be found in a television sitcom. "Home Improvement" anyone? I know, a 30 year-old reference - Google it. I found Payton's to be very clean, neatly organized and well stocked. I quickly found my spackle and milled around for a bit before making my purchase. The young man at the register was polite. Another great small business for us locals! My husband usually finds just what he needs when the box store doesn't have it! Saves us running all over town. It is small, so don't expect everything there! Mostly essentials that keep him from going too far. And prices are comparably competitive! I hate to leave a bad review for a small shop, but I'm hoping that they will see this and fix this issue. The men are idiots here. I came here to get keys made. Jeff straight up did them all wrong and Andrea (I believe her name was) had to fix ALL OF THEM. She informed me that they didn't have 2 of the 4 keys that I wanted made (which annoying I have to go somewhere else, but no ones fault). She told me of another small shop where I could go. Awesome. She offered to write the address down for me, but I said no worries I'll just google it, and asked for the name again. Jeff, yet again, interrupted her mid sentence to tell me it was between some old places that aren't even there anymore. So not helpful. The male toxicity in this store in Horrendous! I was looking for particular screws. After visiting 3 well known places, that carry hardware supplies, I could not find what I needed. My husband mentioned Payton Hardware in Lakeside. How nice to take a little walk back in time, to an amazing family owned hardware store, filled with everything you can find and can't find at Lowe's or Home Depot. I'm so disappointed by my recent visit to Payton's. We've lived in Lakeside 36 years and have always feel confident using this hardware store because the employees knew their business. Unfortunately that is no longer the case. I was greeted by a vapid looking young woman who peppered me with many unnecessary questions when I stated that I needed help in the paint department. After answering, she informed me that she couldn't leave the register to do anything for me. ??? Then an equally vapid but pretentious young man, who I had assumed was a customer possibly waiting for his father since he sat on the ground playing with a metal cart, said he could help me. He proceeded to assume an air of knowledge and steered me to the paint, where I had already been. He started reading the paint cans, asking if I wanted gloss or satin or primer or what? It was patently obvious that he knew NOTHING about paint. He then showed me a cheaper version when I stated that at the current prices I wanted to be sure I bought the correct type of paint. Not what I was saying. He then suggested a flat paint after I had specified that the application was a handrail and it needed a strong durable surface. I was rather appalled by his ignorance after being served by experienced knowledgeable employees in the past. I have always deferred, rightly so, to the men and women here who knew their stuff. Hate to think I'll be giving my money to the big box DIY stores. I hope this experience was a one off and Payton's will train their people better. I'll give it another shot, but just one. read more

Payton's in a nut shell: Super friendly staff, great selection, clean and orderly store and not only is it close by for us Lakeside locals; it is WAY closer than Home Depot. An example of how great their service is: EVERY TIME I walk into Payton's I am greeted with a hearty "hello!" And then I ask where I can find "X" and then they cheerfully show me exactly where "X" can be found. Wam, bam, I'm out the door and on my merry way! Try getting service like that at Home Depot or anywhere else (on Earth). Last but not least stepping into Payton's is like stepping right into a small town where everyone knows everyone. Its nice to support small business. Paytons has been around for as long as i can remember, prices are fair and its way closer than a big corporate store. They have a large selection for plumbing, gardening, paint then abundance of hand tools. They don't sell wood or power tools to my knowledge but I could be wrong. O and they make keys cheap! and once in a while they have a guy who sharpens knives to razor status out front. read more

Small town American Hardware Store! Went in for a washer for an old faucet, spent over $100 in other hard to finds that turned up there. The staff was very friendly and somewhat helpfull, they knew their products, but were unable to recommend alternates for the stuff they didn't have, thus the missing stare in my review. I looking for a poweder based glue called resourcinol(sp), used to buy it at San Diego hardware, but they went foo-fu on me. I'll definitly be back more often Paytons! read more

I would give a '0' if that was offered. I called from Santee Home Depot because I needed a single acoustic ceiling tile (2 X 4) and asked if they sold those by the piece. She said, "Yes." I asked her how much they were and she said, "I think they are about $5.99." So I drove over there... And when I asked where they were she said they didn't stock that item. I told her that I had just called. That REALLY ticked me off!! So, I called Dixieline and they sell them by the piece ($5.99). Dixieline also does LOTS of special order stuff. They are KNOWLEDGEABLE, polite, VERY helpful and carry lots if stuff that you don't normally find in most places!! Thank you True Value for helping me go to the RIGHT place! read more

My wife and I were just in there today looking for a part. My wife asked a lady if they carried it and she said no; would have to buy it on line. When she asked how long that would take the clerk (who had a title "Manager) rudely said "I don't know. I'm not the on line person". On the way out I overheard her helping a guy looking for a washer for a bath tub. His English was good but had an accent; I could understand him but I guess she couldn't so she said "listen, you've got to slow down and speak English if you want me to help you". Not helpful at all if you're not previously known to them, apparently. Employees seem more inclined to talk to each other at the front counter or customers that are obviously regulars. Treat you like you're putting them out by asking for help. I've tried several times to come here and support a local small shop, but they're surprisingly snooty if they think you're not a local cowpoke. This place is a total dump. I went there to rent a UHAUL Truck. When i walked inside i noticed everything in the store was covered with cob webs and dust/dirt. I felt really dirty just standing there waiting for the keys to the truck. The guy at the counter wasn't very happy to be working there. It showed. He handed me the keys and didn't even walk me out to the truck. I asked him "is everything ready to go then?". He said yes. So i walked out to the truck, quickly looked it over and everything on the outside seemed to be fine. I jumped in, drove about 5 miles and started hearing something in the back rolling around and banging against the back of the truck. I pulled over and opened the back. There was left-over furniture in the truck from someone else's move! These people didn't even bother to remove the items from the truck before renting it to someone else! What a joke. A few moments later i looked down while driving and there were dog nails and dog fur all over the floor in the cab. Friggin' gross. I was already almost at my destination so i kept it because i was crunched for time. The truck was also very noisy; the brakes were loud and in need of repair. I just kept hoping it wouldn't break down because i was moving that day. Luckily it didn't break down. I returned the truck later that day and vowed to review this terrible place on YELP and UHAUL.com . I will never return to this place. If anyone does not believe me, just go visit the place and step inside. You'll see what a dump it is. read more

Service is friendly and knowledgeable. They have a surprising selection of items you won't find at the big box stores and their prices are fair. I had some keys cut here and it was done quickly, I didn't have to chase anyone down. They have items you can't find elsewhere, like coffee percolator lids and such. Love this store. read more
