Great provider, they beat my current rate by $30 per month

****Using a friend's account to post this review******* Just starting service was a nightmare. They were content to let me and my family sit in the 110 degree heat all weekend instead of get up and get it done. I had to do all the leg work, that should've been my first clue as to how they treat customers. Fast forward 2 weeks, I'm basically robbed over the weekend, and because I'm a new customer, they will not help me at all to get my power back on after they cut it off yesterday. We're under a heat advisory, and they don't care that being robbed was traumatic enough, now we gotta sit with no air, can't cook anything to feed my family, and clearly can't get a room, because I was ROBBED. They are heartless and care nothing about their customers which ironically, are the only reason they have jobs to begin with. Yes, I'm a new customer, after this, I will not be an old customer. They neglect to mention that they're exempt from any sort of warning before turning off your power. came home from work one day and found my power off with no notice from anyone. lost everything in my fridge, had to find a place to crash for the night because it was so cold, and pay for my cat to be boarded somewhere else. This company isn't good at all. I am attempting to put money on my account so my lights can stay on and I keep getting this message that my account is restricted. Of course there is no one on duty to answer my call and I have until 8pm to make my balance positive so we don't get disconnected. It's 40 degrees outside and this isn't the time to be stressing about whether lights will be on. I have no idea why there is a restriction on my account or why I'm being blocked from adding money to it. This isn't right what you all are doing. I have kids. I complained to the Public Utility Commission, who did a thorough review and found that Payless Power failed to act consistently with Substantive Rule 25.475 General Retail Electric Provider Requirements. I'd give 5 stars if their rates were transparent or more so. I feel like I'm being kept hostage by this company, raising their rates around the time I normally pay for my monthly.. 1-2 days prior forcing me into a deferred payment plan for a month. This is stupid! These companies are unregulated! I want to leave but I can't... I was sooo close, I will leave in August, add $20 just before I get paid and then switch because with the payment plan they put a switch hold for 1 month, you pay down the bill $1 a day which they add to your daily energy charge making it higher. Also if you put less than $75 dollars on your electricity then they charge you $1 for that as well. BUT nobody can say the bill snuck up on you because they're very good at keeping you in the loop everyday on your energy consumption and how much you have left in your energy account or daily balance. read more

I am a first time renter and a young girl who didn't know anything about utility bills so I just went with my first option when I searched up 'cheap electric.' I only realized something was wrong when my boyfriend told me he pays $60 max on power a month and I had been paying $40-$50 A WEEK. When I chose Payless power my plan was for .15c a KWh but that can't be true because im being charged $8-$10 a day even when I would stay with my boyfriend all day & night. This is a SCAM and a big one. I called to get it canceled and the women I spoke to was snarky and rude. She even laughed at my reasoning to cancel. Weird company. Weird. This company appeared on my credit card bill with an $80 charge when I have never heard of them before, and have no account with them. Since I'm not their customer, to call them was futile, and they couldn't find any record of the charge. It was way too much trouble to get someone who could take action and get my money back. The credit card company was not doing their job, but i finally reached customer relations at the company themselves who finally reversed the charges. It's their claim someone stole my credit card to pay their bill with, which seems unlikely for a flat amount of $80. Other reviews lead me to believe this tale is pure fiction, as well. I'd come lots closer to believing that someone within that company is up to some shady business, and I don't trust them and would not use them for my own needs. I do hope our state attorney general will have a closer look. read more

I'm so happy my lease will be up soon . I have had other power services with the same space and let me tell you I only paid $60 a month ! Now I pay roughy $5 a day times that by 30 over $100 a month! I live in a one bedroom apartment . For the 12 hours I'm at work I will shut off my a/c and lights and even unplug things Because the price is more uncomfortable and demanding then me taking the extra time to do these little adjustments ! Please please don't go with this provider... I usually do not leave reviews but people need to be warned. I signed up today and didn't scrub my options like I should've. One, I didn't realize this was pre-paid electric and I started to be very uncomfortable having been on fixed electric previously. I called them in hopes they would help explain the concept of their services; however, getting through to them was probably one of the worst experiences in customer service responsiveness I've ever had. That in itself made me even more uncomfortable. I decided to call back and hold on the line, it took them 30 mins to pick up the phone. Once they did, it wasn't about them explaining anything to me, it was about terminating a service I just started three to four hours prior. The lady got on the phone and acted like she couldn't hear me, told me she was going to hang up and terminate the call. Smh. I was like what! I literally had to yell so she could hear me. I told her I wanted to terminate. She told me, I would have to wait until Monday because they don't terminate service after 300 pm. What! This business is an absolute rip off and should be shut down. BEWARE!!! Guys and gals, pay the deposit fee and find a reputable, reliable electric company at a fixed rate. Don't settle for this complacent company. My electric bills are low every month!!!! There's no deposit or application fee, so that made it really easy for moving into a home on a budget. There's no long term contract vs other companies. There's never any late charges, disconnect or reconnect fees, which tells me that this company is for the customer, not the other way around. Especially with today's economy. Since canceling my service in early May 2018, I have continued to get annoying computerized Robo calls from this company on a regular basis, after calling and asking them to cease the calls. I suspect many others are having the same problems, since I called and specifically asked Payless Power to cease calling. Oh my gosh, if you're thinking about going here - don't do it! I will say that as someone coming fresh out of college with no credit history to my name - the fact that they don't require a deposit or credit check was what originally appealed to me, but trust me you can find much better options with one of the larger providers. If you're not familiar with the way their prepaid plan works, let me lay it out for you: So when you first sign up, you pay your first 3 months at what is their "estimated energy usage" which basically seems to be a bullshit amount of kwh they pull out of their ass with no logical explanation. After you pay these first 3 months, you continue to pay their estimated usage at the beginning of each month, but you get a credit back for what they overbilled you on your account 3 months prior. So if you started your service at the beginning of January, you would pay Jan-March at their estimated usage. Beginning in April, you would pay their estimated usage for April less the amount they overbilled you in January, and so on each month following that. Here's where my real beef is. I live alone in a 570 sq. ft. apartment. I work all the time, and I am great about turning off lights when I leave, and turning up (or down depending on the season) the air when I leave for work in the morning. My actual energy usage on a typical non-summer month has been about 300 kwh. In the peak of summer, I have reached 800, but as a general rule my bill is around $40. This month I received my electric bill, and it was a whopping $190 (WITH a $30 credit back). My estimated energy usage was 1617 kwh, which given the size of my apartment and my usage history is completely insane. When I called they tried to tell me the estimate is based off of historical usage, which is clearly untrue and wouldn't budge on the estimate so I immediately cancelled my account. Given that they already owe me back a good $100, I'm not willing to keep forking over my hard earned cash to sit around and wait for a refund 3 months later. read more

This company is deceiving and manipulative. They advertise are rate of 12.1 cent with no additional fees but you'll never receive the rate of 12.1 cent. I've spoken to a number of customer service agents who like to talk to you like you're stupid until you pull out a calculator and show them the numbers don't add up. They'll place you on a long hold because they don't understand why. During this time they're trying to come up with an excuse for the false advertisement. They try to say there's an additional TDU delivery charge but their sales agents will tell you all of the charges and fees are bundled into that 12.1 cent. I've even called and pretend like I was a new customer, asked if there was an additional TDU charge and they will tell you no. My balance has always been over $35 yet I never receive the rate they advertise. If that isn't bad enough if your balance goes under $35 they will really start taking advantage of you. Charge as much as .20 per kWH. If you try to keep you electricity consumption down because of their high rates, they will charge you an additional $1 on top of that rate. This is completely deceiving and false advertisement. If you're reading this you've most likely been scammed by them already and you're not alone. Their sales agents and customer service representatives are trained liars. read more

Just received a letter from the Public Utility Commission of Texas and they determined that your company acted inconsistently with Substantive Rules 25.474 Selection of Retail Electric Provider and 25.474 General Retail Electrical Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers. Which basically means they found you guilty of false advertisement. Your company signs up customers under false expectations that they'll receive a fixed rate if they keep their balance above $35. But no matter what we do we'll never receive the rate advertised on your website. Once you have customers enrolled your company starts scamming and draining hard working families out of their money. Their are tons of reviews online that claim your company is guilty of false advertisement and I have the letter from the PUC that backs those claims.
