They kept sending me predatory letters telling me it was time to renew, that I had to renew, so instead I decided to switch companies to a more affordable one. I noticed this month i had a late payment fee of $8,60 so I called them to ask why. They said I was late ONE DAY and I couldn't believe it. I asked what happened to the grace period. They said it was the rules. BUT they said since I've been with them for 20 years they would wave the late fee, but I said WAIT what if I hadn't noticed and how many more people haven't notice how much more money are they making. Your probably talking millions just for being late one day. So I went back and looked at my other bills and noticed the previous month I had 2 disconnection fees for $20 each. I told them I have never been disconnected. They said as soon as the email gets generated and sent out it automatically gives you the disconnection fee even if you don't get disconnected. I was like wtf, just cause an email not a STAMPED letter gets sent out its an automatic $20. This has to be somehow illegal. It's called a disconnection fee not a warning fee. Someone needs to take a look at the disconnection fee and late charges rule. This if freaking ridiculous. Deceptive Billing - Overcharged and Misled by Reliant Energy I signed up for Reliant's 12-month Free Nights plan in July 2024 at $0.19/kWh, but was actually charged closer to $0.28/kWh. My bills for a 2,600 sq ft home ranged from $300-$500/month, far above expectations. In Jan 2025, I switched to Average Billing, which was supposed to level out my payments and be cancelable at any time. I repeatedly confirmed I wouldn't owe anything at the end of my contract--but after canceling, I was hit with an unexpected $850 final bill. As a state employee paid only once a month, this caused serious hardship. Reliant told me they couldn't help because I was "no longer a customer" and threatened collections. I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with Reliant's business practices. I recently spoke with Reliant and was shocked to learn about the \$250 transfer fee to move services to another apartment, especially considering that a deposit has already been paid. Furthermore, my elderly father received an initial bill of \$557, which is excessive. Being told that both $250 deposit will only be refunded after a year is unacceptable and not a good business practice. If a \$250 deposit has already been made as of the 25 March 2025, it should be transferable with my father's service. I would never recommend Reliant based on this experience. Reliant charged my mother a $500 cancel fee after she had a stroke and had to move to a facility. She had to leave her rent house and even though she paid the bill until the new people moved in Reliant said she failed to notify them in advance of the cancellation. During the interim period we notified them but they said they would not record it as proper notice because it was a rental. Reliant customer service did not care and would not remove the charge. They started to jack up the charges a lot on renewal, then cancelled at end of contract period. I had signed up for a business electricity plan for 3 years. On renewal next time they did the same trick again. Unfortunately, If I have to cancel the current contract, I need to pay 3 times the last bill amount before the cancellation is initiated. Today I called for any better plan, they said even if you find a different plan, it will be considered as a cancellation and the same "3 times the last bill amount" applied to that also. Most companies will honor at least their own plan if we switch later during a contract period. T his company cease to exist if their attitude is this. Very poor customer service overall. I had Reliant service for a year and found their rates to be very expensive. I switched to another company when my contract came up for renewal. My last day of service was April 16th 2025, and as of today August 5th 2025 Reliant has not returned my $200 deposit. I paid all my bills on time, have excellent credit and yet, despite calling customer service on a pretty much weekly basis since mid May, Reliant will not resolve this issue. I wouldn't even give Reliant one star if I could. I signed up with them based on a recommendation from my rental company, and it's easily the worst decision I've made. Our electricity bill has been consistently $500 every month, which is outrageous. We've lived in larger rental homes before and never paid more than $400 -- usually far less. This current home is smaller, and yet our bill is the highest it's ever been. When I called to ask about a leveling or budget billing plan, I was told they don't offer one. Crooks to say the least. We were ambushed in Walmart with two sales representatives that lied about the price per kwh. I told him right off hand that I knew he couldnt get me a better deal, but he insisted. I let him give me a quote which was 11.7 per kwh which would be better than my price now. We made the switch and then read the contract which stated it was 17.6 per kwh instead. I wouldn't trust a company that has Crooks pushing their services. I am not one to usually write negative reviews, but my experience with Reliant Energy has been stressful. I called Reliant in December of 2024 because I was going to be moving into a new apartment that month. I told Reliant that my move in date was going to be 12/10. They understood and said my electricity services would be active by then. I moved into my unit and I had power. Great. I went on Reliant's website to set up my account. It said that my bill would be available within 45-60 days after services start. Great. I kept checking the website for a bill, until eventually Feb/March came around and I still had not received a bill from Reliant. I thought this was odd. So I called Reliant, and was informed that my services were never activated because apparently I did not sign some forms that I was supposed to sign. They said they texted the link to me, but I looked at my messages and did not see anything where it said I had to sign something. Reliant told me that the services were not activated, I didn't owe anything, and asked if I wanted to complete a new enrollment process. I said no because I've had electricity services for the past few months, so I want to find out who my provider is and if I will be getting billed. Reliant understood. Later in March I got a phone call and text from my apartments advising that I will have to pay violation fees because they have been providing electricity to my unit. My apartments told me that I need to find my own electricity provider otherwise I will continue to be charged violation fees for not having electricity services with a company. Ok fine... I didn't sign Reliants paperwork so my services never started (and reliant never contacted me by phone, text email etc to advise that my services had never activated). So whatever... I paid the violation fees to my apartments since they had been providing electricity to my unit all this time and the expense was justified and reasonable. I call Reliant again at the beginning of April to advise that I would like to resolve the issue and set up services with them officially now. I spoke with someone who was friendly and helped me create a new account. I thought the situation was resolved. He said I had to email Reliant photos of my drivers license and passport for identity verification, so I did that. He said that Reliant would start providing services to my residence immediately and that I can go online to check my account to confirm. Fantastic! About a week later, I went online to check, and I was still having trouble creating an online account with my new Reliant account #. So I had to call Reliant back to figure out how I can get logged in to view/pay my bill. The first representative I spoke to had informed me that my services were inactive. I asked if she could explain why, and she couldn't. She said that the most she could do is help me set up a new enrollment for services.. for a 3rd time.. which I did not want to do yet.. Because if I've had an issue not 1, but 2 times, then based on that pattern, I am probably going to have an issue a 3rd time.. so she transferred me to someone else instead. The next rep couldn't clearly explain why my services were inactive either, and informed me that my services had activated for 24 hours only and that I had a bill due for $7.71. I expressed my confusion and frustration - I agreed to a contract with Reliant, the services were activated the day I called, and cancelled one day later, even though I did not authorize the termination of the services. So why were they cancelled? If you are going to charge me for one day of services then fine... but I need to know why the contract that both parties agreed to was suddenly broken. He could not provide me an answer, so he transferred me to a supervisor named Eddie. I told the supervisor - If Reliant provided services to my unit for one day and I owe $7.71 for those services, then fine, I understand - but I told him that I want to know why my services were activated and then terminated (because in my mind, i agreed to a contract, the contract was upheld and services started, and the only way for those services to stop is if I don't pay the bill or if I pay the fee to cancel the services). I told him that the if I do not owe anything to Reliant, then I would like for the phone call to end, and I will find services elsewhere, as I no longer want to deal with trying to set up a new account with them due to the previous 2 failed attempts. The supervisor told me that I do not owe the $7.71 to Reliant, says that he is not sure why the previous rep would have provided that incorrect information, and assured me that my services were not active with reliant, and I thanked him and disconnected the line. I called Gexa Energy the next morning and went through a very simple enrollment process. Well... a few days later I get an email from Reliant saying that I HAVE A BILL DUE FOR $7.71. Whatever. When I contacted them to ask what is happening they provided me with the usual BS that my consumption went up...my consumption went up 50% so from $200 to $300...but then they did not charge me $300 but instead increased the price of energy by 71% bringing the price of my bills to staggering $600+..... The most amazing part is yet to come...When I contacted them about this...I asked them precise questions which they entirely ignored and as a solution to my inquiry they attempted to lock me into a new 60 month contract plan which according to them would have saved me money. I asked them if I was on this plan last month how much my savings would have been and they told me $25.37. So not only did they not answer my questions but they attempted to lock me into a plan paying $600 for electricity per month instead for the next 5 years. My experience for the most part has been fine. Honestly I haven't had to interact with any agents for my entire first year having Reliant. Then out of nowhere I had two days that were showing up at 205 kW in February (my average usage is like 10 a day). For perspective, these two days are more than the entire month combined. They also charged me a disconnection fee even though I was not disconnected. I called to dispute but kept getting the runaround. They kept pushing me to Oncor instead of solving my problem. They made every excuse for why my bill is high. (They told me a neighbor could be tapped into my electricity LOL.) One agent was about to process my billing dispute but after a 20 min chat with his supervisor, all of a sudden he said Reliant can't do it and said I need to call Oncor, and he hung up abruptly. I was billed by Reliant with a due date of August 29th. On September 4th, at 3:43 AM, they issued a disconnection notice. I found out about it later that day and made the payment by 1 PM, before any service was actually interrupted. Despite paying on the same day, I was charged both a late payment fee and a disconnection fee. How is it fair to penalize someone twice for a single late payment? Has anyone else gone through this? I'm wondering if it's even legal to charge two different fees for the same issue. I'd also advise anyone considering Reliant to look elsewhere. If I could give zero stars, I would. I have problems with billing EVERY month. I call and am assured that the account is set up as autopay. Then we receive a bill with a disconnect notice and extra fees because the bill wasn't paid. I have literally been assured EVERY month this year that things have been correct. I wish I could get out of our contract with them. I will never use Reliant again and would encourage anyone reading this review not to use them either. When that first bill hits, it will show you the hidden charges that they didn't specifically advertise when you signed up for their plan. I made a verbal contractual agreement and have stuck it yet they have not and do not want to take the blame and want to put it on oncor. Reliant energy is not customer friendly at all. They can force you to pay $20 disconnection fee on bills just because you paid the next day after the due day, even if it is an issue of a change in a credit card that had been set up for autopay. It is only normal to have few days of grace after due day because there can always be issues beyond our control.
