The first time we were supposed to meet the gentleman texted me 15 minutes before we were supposed to meet that he couldn't make it. That's fine, things happen. My tenant called and complained about a leaking faucet and the closet door not opening. I called Payless Handyman to see if he could take a look at it. Payless Handyman gave me a "sight unseen" quote which was rather high, but I needed this done so I went for it. He arrived and called me to inform me of what needed to be changed. Of course it was more work than I thought, but the Payless Handyman took his time to explain why I needed all the extras. After the work was done, my tenant was happier than ever with the work. The bottom line is this. Payless Handyman is not cheap. However, you get what you pay for in terms of workmanship and customer service. They are a really easy company to work with and offer some of the best customer service I have ever experienced. After the job he told me that if I ever have any questions (even if it is regarding a DIY job), to give him a call. My wife and I contracted with Les to fix a sliding glass door, which was delayed once (beyond his control) due to weather. In the interim, our garage door motor broke, so we asked him to look at that as well when he came out. The initial estimate for the sliding glass door ($450-600) seemed a little high, but when he explained that he may have to remove/replace some tile to complete the job, but would need to inspect prior to finalizing the quote, I was okay with his estimate. He came out on a Tuesday, took a look at the sliding glass door, and determined that it could removed out the exterior of the house without damaging the existing floor. I asked him at that point for a revised quote, yet HE WOULD NOT PROVIDE ONE to me. I should've known something was up at that point, but as I was grateful for him simply coming out, I bit my lip. In the end, the door needed to be removed, the underside of the door cleaned/dehaired, and the wheels replaced (I was told the cost of this part was $100, but didn't independently verify). After 2 hours of labor, I was informed the fee was $400 (that pencils out to $150/hr of labor for him and his son to remove my sliding glass door, replace the wheels, and put the door back up. I felt this was a little high, but I paid w/ a card, and the work was excellent. For this part of the project, 4 stars (5 stars quality, 3 stars price). So WHY 2 STARS ON THE OVERALL RATING? I asked him to take a look at the garage door motor, and he confirmed my suspicions that it needed to be replaced. I asked him for an estimate, and he told me $450-475 (approx $300-325 for the motor, $150 for the installation). I asked him whether any one brand was better than any other, and he said "They're all good quality, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman." He confirmed that he would get the parts and come out the next day (Wednesday) to install, RAIN OR SHINE (it was projected to rain that afternoon/evening, but according to him, since he'd be inside the garage, the job could proceed). That night, I decided to do some price comparison, and realized that every single garage door motor I found was between $175-200, and that Lowe's offers $97 installation. The next morning, I texted him and expressed concern about the overall cost of the project given what I had found online, and told me I would be willing to pay $350 (the $200 high end price for a product with a lifetime warranty on the motor and any belt/screw drive, plus the $150 installation fee he had quoted me), but would be willing to pay more if he could show that the parts he was getting cost more than the $200 I found online (who knows, maybe they're higher quality?). He responded back by saying that "the Depot stuff is, in my opinion junk for the most part" (IF SO, WHY DID HE SAY THAT THERE WAS NO ISSUE WITH QUALITY AS LONG AS I WENT WITH A MAJOR BRAND?!). He then talked about how he'd provide additional services like adjusting and lubing the door which justifies his higher price (indeed, I was willing to pay him $150 to do work that Lowe's charges $97 for). He then offered me to do the work for $425 in a text sent at 10am. I still thought this was excessive, as he had not commented at all on my question about the cost of parts. However, I still wanted to work with him (why, looking back, is beyond me), so I asked him to bring it in at $400 in a text sent at 10:45am. He then responds back at 11:30am saying that my negotiating with him "feels like a debate or trial", that "it sounds like we are not a good match for the garage door", that "I likely would not be happy with the services even at $400" and wishes me happy holidays. I immediately called him to tell him that there was no bad intentions on my part other than wanting a fair price for the work being provided. He eventually agreed to do the job for $400 cash, but when I asked him to confirm that he'd still be out that day to do the job he promised, he said "Well, I've already reassigned your crew to another job, so today's not possible." WHAT? His position? "If you are negotiating a price with me, we don't have a deal", and he will go so far as to pull a crew from a job if you even ask about price WITHOUT NOTIFYING YOU AS A CUSTOMER THAT THIS IS A POSSIBILITY SO YOU CAN MAKE THE CHOICE WHETHER TO CONTINUE WITH THE WORK. He then said he would schedule me for Thursday, WEATHER PERMITTING (even though the job is inside the garage). His reasoning for the change from his previous statement? "I don't want to walk in the rain and get my tools wet." That was enough for me, I contracted with another vendor and am very happy with the results of my garage door. Bottom line: If you have no concerns parting with large chunks of your net worth, and will NEVER question his prices, Les is a good contractor who does quality work. But HEAVEN HELP YOU if you even once question his pricing structure. He'd rather not work with you than negotiate a fair price. read more

Giving Les 1 star is me being overly generous. Les stated he would arrive at my home at 9am and called me at 9:42am to tell me he was not able to make it until the evening. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and accommodated his request even though I'm the customer! Once he arrived he raised his price from $210 to $270 to paint and hang a closet door. I asked if he was willing to lower his price and he was rude and stated he didn't care if I had someone else do the job. Les then said it's probably better to have someone else do the job. I called Payless Handyman after an attempt to mount our new 60 in TV above our fireplace. Les called me right back within minutes of leaving a message. He was in my area buying supplies for another job he was working on, so he was nice enough to come right over. Thank God he did, because his professional advice was a blessing. He gave us a wealth of information on the "right" way to mount the TV over the fireplace and very important safety facts that we had not even considered. On his way out we asked him about a cable TV connection that we were having problems with and he actually was nice enough to fix it free of charge! We were really impressed and thankful for his willingness to help expecting no monetary compensation. Lets face it, you just don't see that often these days. We felt his quote was fair and that Les would get the job done the "right" way, so we booked them for the installation. I'm happy to say that I'm extremely happy with their work. They did a very professional job! There are no wires showing and they left nothing more for us to do. Usually, holes are left in your wall for you to figure out how to repair, but Les "completed" the entire job, and that included repairing the walls too. He even touched up other places on my walls that had nothing to do with the installation of the TV. We had another situation with our dish washer that we just couldn't figure out what went wrong with our installation. We called Les hoping he would be able to shed some light on the situation. Again, Les was kind enough to come over the next day and get to the bottom of what the issue was. It took time to solve the problem (a faulty new dishwasher) but he wanted not monetary compensation for his time, advice or help. So, do I recommend Payles Handyman? ABSOLUTELY!! We recently moved to the area and had many things that needed to be taken care of.......new faucets; disconnecting, exchange and reconnect existing washer & dryer with ours; pieces of art from Europe that had to go on the wall; curtain rods and curtains, etc Les offered us an excellent price for the whole day. His guys were on time, have good manners, they are very easy to work with, have a very good sense of layout (in terms of how to hang art), an excellent knowledge and were at all times very friendly and helpful. They were in our place three times and never left it dirty, at no time tools were flying around or we had to step over stuff. I had a problem with a set of lights that suddenly would no longer turn on. I called Les and before coming over he had me walk through a couple of trouble shooting tasks. This helped me to isolate the problem to the actual wall switch. This surprised us both, as the house is only 6 years old and light switches don't typically malfunction. Les asked me if I thought I was capable of replacing the switch myself. I told him that I had done it before and could probably do it this time without burning the place down. He told me no charge and that he was happy that he could help me save the cost of his minimum charge for a house call. Les, thank you for your willingness to help. I would not recommend for plumbing work. I hired him to install a sink, repair the surrounding tile and install a garbage disposal. Several mos later I had a sizable plumbing bill. Some of the plastic pipes were short cut and a rubber connector in the brand new garbage disposal had been ripped during installation. Instead of disclosing the damage and ordering a new part it was simply duct taped. I found out about the tape when the plumber pointed out the source of one of my two leaks. I thought I'd found my handiman. Very disappointed. read more

My boyfriend and I called Les last week after our home was burglarized and side door was kicked in. The door jam, drywall and wall studs were all broken. He came out within 2 hours to secure the door shut for the night and explain the process of fixing the door and how long it would take.
