Check in was efficient after an employee took them back I never got any updates while I was away. It would seem to be an easy text to assure me that they were safe and doing well. A picture or two would have been welcomed. When I asked how they did the person taking my money said "fine". That s didn't settle for me. The price charged was a lot and I couldn't afford all the extras like play time with the other dogs for $20+ per day per dog so I could see them play on a camera. I thought that would be part of boarding. Not here. It is a beautiful building and location but I won't be bringing them to this place again unless they offer more services with boarding. And I had to pay a holiday bonus charge for 5 of the days for each dog.

The dogs who are arriving and leaving do not have that panicked, manic behavior that some displayed at one kennel where I live. I can pay for an extra time outside for him after the kennel has closed for the day, and for a suite where I can watch him on a live feed. The staff is courteous and professional, the facility is clean and well kept inside and out, and although I hate leaving him anywhere, this has been the best option I have found.

My wife and I have taken our two 12-year-old dogs to American Pet Resort since we moved to New Bern…read more2 years ago for both boarding and daycare services. Though expensive, we have had nothing but good experiences keeping our dogs with them until most recently. One of our dogs, a very social and well behaved West Highland terrier, was banned from spending any time with other dogs on the 2nd day of a 7-day stay after bitting another dog. He spent 6 out of the 7 days of our trip either in the kennel or, for some reason, the hallway outside the kennel while our other dog was in the kennel--a very strange decision given that he's great with our other dog. Why not have them in the same space? Though my Westie has never shown signs of violence or aggressiveness before, I realize the need for them to be careful and protect the other dogs, but no one at American Pet Resort contacted us to tell us what had occurred. We learned after looking at the online cameras. There we saw our Westie confined to his kennel while all the other dogs, including our second dog, were playing outside. Why didn't someone from the kennel call us to let us know? That kind of proactive communication is something I expect. I was none too pleased to find out what happened only after having to make a call to find out why our Westie was left alone in his kennel during outside time. While away, I made a call suggesting the staff place my Westie and my second dog in a separate outdoor space with one another. The staff member I spoke to said they would do so, but they only did so once. Our Westie spent the next 5 days out of our 7 day trip in either in his kennel or the hallway (?) just outside of the kennel, and has been banned from outdoor play with other dogs during future visits. We will make sure that there will be no future visits.

Within days of surgery he was vomiting, not eating, losing weight, and fighting a severe infection. I fought for him with every vet visit and medication they gave but he DIDN'T survive. He came out sick, suffering, and fighting for survival and now HE IS GONE. What makes this unbearable is how the clinic handled it. When I begged for answers and accountability, I was met with condescension, dismissiveness, and zero compassion. My dog is dead at just two years old, and the people responsible refused to even acknowledge their role or offer any help. They tried to blame his "congenital defects" and anything else they could come up with, rather than admit their lack of competency and failure to truly look at all the facts. His care felt half-hearted, reactive, and sloppy until it was too late. When I met with the owner, Dr. Stelma, after my dog died, I was treated with arrogance and coldness. He was rude, dismissive, kept checking his watch while I was pouring out my grief, and made it painfully clear he cared more about money and his practice's image than the lives of the animals trusted to him. Ranger was my family. He slept by my side every night since he was 8 weeks old. Now I am left devastated, heartbroken, and furious. If you love your pet, DO NOT RISK THEIR LIFE HERE. I hope this shows you the risks of this place.

The vet that we were using was absolutely useless and after 3 times, we just gave up on her. A friend suggested Dr. Selma, we went and saw an immediate improvement. Dr. Selma went over Ollie from head to tail, told us what he thought might be wrong in language that we could understand, explained the tests that he was going to have to run to back up his diagnosis and when the tests backed his diagnosis up, he went over everything that we needed to do to get Ollie better. He never rushed us, got back to us quickly when we had questions (they have the best answering machine message ever) and followed trough his recuperation every step of the way. In the middle of all of this, we had to put our cat to sleep. The kindness and compassion that they showed us was amazing. The thing that I like the best about this whole practice is that everyone there is terrific; from the person that answers the phone, to the person that fills your prescriptions. At one time, I worked for a Vet in New York. He was terrific but he was no Dr. Selma!!!! We cannot recommend him enough. Ollie is doing great!!!!

I know that is normal ,but what wasn't normal was her reactions. As she tried to drink water, she would stop as if someone was touching her. She was clearly not comfortable standing and walking. This continued all night and even as she tried to eat (she usually inhales her food). The next day all these actions continued. Upon inspection she had been trimmed (shaved actually) around her anus and also on the bridge of her nose. It got to the point of being all red like a diaper rash. She was obviously in pain. We took pictures to document the areas. That is when we decided to back to the spa. We returned to the groomer on 5/19/2022. When I questioned the groomer as to how long she had been a groomer, she said 3yrs. I showed her the bridge of her nose first. She looked at me confused and said what?????? What???? I said look at it, it's red!!!! I didn't do that!!!! We'll I certainly didn't.. then to her anal area, it was raw an red all over a 2-3"area. Again what!!!! She said she didn't have time for this and stood in the hall doorway. The supposed manager(who was behind the desk during this encounter)stepped in looked at the area an said sorry, what do you want me to do!!! I said if she doesn't know how to trim Golden Doodles be honest with your clients she shouldn't be allowed. She really had no explanation .. I asked for the owner was told it was the veterinarian Dr. Ridgefield next door. I went directly over to the next building and asked to see the Dr., the receptionist had been informed I was coming, and quickly said he was at lunch 1-2. I waited over an hr. with my dog in the reception room. At approx. 2:20 I was brought into an examine room. I explained to the tech what had happened. She looked, said nothing and Dr. Ridgefield came in. as owner of the pet spa and a vet I explained to him the situation. He tried to look at her, but his hands were trembling so much ,he asked for assistance from his tech. I was told "dogs don't always stay still". I know that. They also can't be sheered too close in 2 different areas either!! I previously was fortunate to adopt a greyhound for 11of her 13yrs. I know how abused animals act. He claimed his groomer was good, and never had a complaint before!! That doesn't mean it didn't happen. The physical rawness of the area's were from where they had to drain her anal sacks Dr. Ridgefield explained!!!!!! That was never even an issue and never told to me. This is the 1sttime in her 3 1/2 yrs has she been returned to me with rawness on her nose and bottom. He sat there and looked at me and said "what do you want me to do?' I said obviously your groomer needs more training, no dog should endure this EVER. I said if that is how You feel You should not be a caregiver to animals. Maybe you should get out of the BUSINESS!!!!! Animals care should come 1st. I told him he was rude an ignorant!!! Actually he was acting like a pompous ass. HE REALLY DIDN'T CARE. I left very upset. I highly suggest anyone considering taking their animals to Dr Ridgefield's for vet visits or his other business Pet SPA 1804 South Glenburnie road New Bern N C PLEASE think twice. Ours animals are our responsibility, there care is in our hands. I can't believe how this can EVER take place or be allowed. WE are the voices for our pets!!!!!!

I bring my corgis here each year to board while I stay at a beach resort. The business is small but…read morethe staff really seems to care for the animals. They remember my dogs' personalities from year to year -- they'll comment on funny things they've done in the past when I call to make reservations, and they always have a story about them to tell me on pick-up day. The dogs are crated at night and allowed to play in a shaded exercise yard (one for smaller dogs, one for bigger dogs) during the day. When it's hot, they put out a wading pool. Since I was a nervous mommy during the first few dropoffs, they gave me the tour and let me watch my dogs going down into the yard and checking it out. They also gave me updates when I called to check on how they were doing and were always friendly about it, even though I probably drove them crazy the first time I boarded the younger one. :) This year in particular, I was impressed that the owner pointed out to me on pickup day that one of my dogs was limping on one leg (which is not uncommon with my dogs, who both play hard and refuse to slow down). A less scrupulous person might have let it go or even tried to hide a minor injury but she made sure to walk him around and show me what was happening so I could keep an eye on it. If boarding here, bring your preferred dog food and feeding instructions will be followed. Also bring their vaccine history or have your vet fax it ahead of time. Then relax, knowing your dogs are in good hands and will come home tired and happy.
