I am absolutely furious and extremely disappointed with the grooming service my Maine Coon received. I trusted this business to care for my cat and expected the groomers to have a basic understanding of how to properly groom a long-haired breed. Instead, they took clippers to his beautiful natural coat.
What makes this even more unbelievable is the explanation I received when the owner called me back. He told me they have another Maine Coon that comes in and gets a #4 clipper cut all over, so they simply assumed that was what I wanted.
Are you kidding me?
Since when does the grooming preference of another customer determine what should be done to my cat? Why would a professional groomer assume that a Maine Coon should have its natural coat clipped without first confirming that this was what the owner wanted?
Maine Coons have a distinctive double coat consisting of longer protective guard hairs and a dense undercoat. Proper routine grooming generally involves brushing, removing loose undercoat, carefully addressing tangles, and performing sanitary trims when necessary. Clipping the entire coat is not something that should be treated as a standard grooming procedure. Unnecessary clipping can alter the coat's appearance and texture, and the grooming process itself can cause avoidable stress.
This is basic breed-specific information that I would expect a professional groomer to understand. And if they don't know how a particular breed should be groomed, they have a responsibility to educate themselves or ask questions before picking up a set of clippers.
What bothers me most is the complete lack of professional judgment. There was no reason to assume that because another customer chooses to have their Maine Coon clipped, I would want the same thing done to mine. They owner said, "I guess it's a matter of preference." Preference? Really? No, it's a matter of what is correct and healthy for the specific breed. Every animal is different, and a groomer's responsibility is to understand the needs of the individual pet and follow the owner's instructions, not make assumptions.
I entrusted this business with my cat because I believed I was dealing with knowledgeable professionals. The owner's explanation has only made the situation worse because it suggests that this decision was based on another customer's grooming preferences rather than any thoughtful assessment of my cat's coat.
I am deeply disappointed, angry, and concerned that a business offering professional pet grooming services would make such a significant decision without confirming it with the owner.
If you own a Maine Coon or any other long-haired, double-coated cat, I strongly recommend thinking twice before trusting this business with your pet. I certainly will not be returning. read more
