I use the Paul Mitchell School because I'm from out of town visiting and don't know where else to go. This week was the second time for a blowout. On the positive side, it is very inexpensive--$5 plus tip for blowout. On the negative side, one never knows who will do your hair since the stylists rotate out. The first time, the stylist was great. Yesterday, not so great. I had to ask my stylist for more head massage as I barely felt her fingers on my scalp during the wash. Even with the ask, it was very much less than desirable. For the blowout, I didn't get what I asked which was blow straight back with volume. She parted my hair and blew out flat. One side was not blown out smooth but left frizzy. I'm not the type to ask for a redo plus I had already spent enough time there so I just left and figured I would touch up the blowup myself at home. Also, it took over an hour for a blowout. My professional at home gives me a haircut and blowout in an hour, and I love it. I did tip the stylist because it was the right thing to do not because I loved the result. Hopefully the styles will gain a lot more experience before she begins working professionally. An instructor does not check the work. I actually wondered if there were any instructors at the school. So bottom line do not expect experienced hairstyles at the school as they are all students with little and varying levels of experience. You might luck out or you might not. read more

Brook was my stylist and she was very personable, friendly and professional. We discussed what I wanted done and she did a great job. My hair went from below my waist and now it is at my collar bone and I love it! I'm 71 years old and I have a hair style that is so easy to care for, for the first time in over thirty years. I love this place to go get my hair done, they always do great on my hair... but, I saw the they do $25 full set! I was so excited I booked an appointment and I fully understand that students will take longer because they are less experienced but 6 hours to do my nails... that's totally ridiculous, I mean the girl who did my nails she was a sweetheart and so nice but the teacher was never there, never came to check how she was doing. Acrylic application was awful and you'd think they'd teach them better or better techniques to help with clumps, nope doesn't seem like they teach them at all... so disappointed, honestly I tried to like them, but one hand hade longer nails and some weren't even the shape i wanted.. I'm really upset too because the girl doing them was having such a hard time with my nails.. the teacher needs to do better... if they aren't confident/comfortable doing nails then don't put them out there with no knowledge. Never will i come back to get my nails done here. They were so bad I redid them myself and I've never done acrylic and they look better... I hope that young lady can go places and I know she's got talent but the teachers need to teach better. I will always come back for my hair though, I got a deep conditioning maybe a week before my nails and it was so amazing, I had this beautiful kind women that just was so amazing she made my hair so soft and she trimmed it! It looked so good. The vibe was okay the young lady was crying while doing my nails because her friend just graduated from the program so I understand that but she would answer personal calls and would cuss and be aggressive while talking to whoever she was, it was uncomfortable and she would text every so often.. I don't mind I few here and there but when my nails take 6 hours to do I do mind. I hated them so much but I knew that young lady tried so I still tipped her $20 onto the $30 dollar service. read more

Everybody needs to learn their craft before they can go out and do it. In order to do that, they need clients who won't be mad if mistakes are made. We've been in here 3 or 4 times now. I'll summarize those experiences: -Hair dye and cut ended up taking a LONG time because they had to fix mistakes. But they were very nice and they didn't ruin my wife's hair! -Men's cuts have been fine. Both times I've had a man who is clearly planning to go to a men's barbershop. Lots of clippers and fade work. It was fine. One of the guys listened to music in his headphones while he worked (which is cool but unconventional). -The nail salon visits have been fine. We've had different experience/ability levels. Overall, you can't beat the price if you are willing to try out new people. read more

So..... I moved to Reno from Idaho and since I am a member of the Paul Mitchell monthly club I contacted this school for my root touch up on color and my free cut and roller set. On Monday, 9/23, after leaving several voicemail messages, my call was answered by a young man who said all students would be in class Tuesday all day. He said I could be seen on Wednesday, 9/25 at 10:30 AM by Taylor. I started my 30 minute drive and arrived at 10:30 and told the young woman at the counter that I had a 10:30 appointment with Taylor and she asked for my phone number, because my name wasn't enough? Then she said that I was WRONG and my appointment was for Thursday! I told her that was not what I was told on Monday and she said I could come back today at 1:30 PM. NO! So I started my 30 minute drive back home. I'm canceling my membership!!! So sad because I have been going to Paul Mitchell schools since 2006. Don't bother with the lack of customer service here. My first time here for services and I was very pleasantly surprised at how spacious and stylish it was inside. My usual nail technician I frequent at her salon was busy and I desperately needed a fill. My husband gets his hair cut here (they do a great job!) so I decided to try it out. My appointment was for 5:15 and I waited 20-25 minutes after I got there but once my nails got started by Sophia she did a great job! These students are still learning so they take longer but my nails were meticulous and every detail was perfect! All the nail students looked like they were doing a great job too! Not the place to go if you're in a hurry but if you have some time, want to give a student practice and also save some money it's a great choice! read more

I've come to Paul Mitchell on and off for many years now. Typically, it was for affordable hair coloring and haircuts. The only thing in having thicker hair and wanting vibrant colors (reds/burgundies) is it becomes an all-day process. Come in at 10 am and leave their shop by 5 pm, so I haven't been many years for hair coloring services. Recently I came in for a haircut and enjoyed the conversation that I had with the student and she took her time and took great care with my hair. During this time I learned that there are fashion colors available and typically it can range for around $80, when I reach out to salons I'm told they start at $120 and up, so this was great news. Recently I learned that they now have nail services, and so my mom and I went to check them out. It was $20 for spa pedicure regular polish, the spa consists of a large bowl that your feet are placed in, not the actual spa chairs like in the nail salons. I did notice the student was very attentive to each step. The only thing is that their polish colors are limited in colors. There was a bunch of bright colors, so I opted for black which I typically would not choose but it was one of the few dark colors available. They had these color samples on a ring, but I was told they may not have the colors available. But if looking for something that is affordable where you have a good cushioning of time, I think this is a great school to utilize! read more

My hair was severely damaged for a while. I wanted to go short for a minute. I found out about this place and just decided to go in and OMG! that was one of my best decisions ever!!! I got a LONG BOB!!! Hair artist SHIRLEY helped me out with my deep conditioning, hair cut and styling. She was so amazing and friendly. We talked and laughed the whole time while she was working on my hair. She was very careful and patient with her work. Then came the instructor ROB!!! He went above and beyond with suggestions and guidance. He checked on my hair frequently. They doublechecked with me several times about the exact length I wanted which is all a client can ask for!!!! Both of them made me feel like home. I felt like I was literally meeting some old friends. The whole vibe was humble!!! I felt so welcomed that I booked another service before even leaving the school. While the tour wasn't too bad and I was almost sure I wanted to come here that carla lady ruined it :) Not to mention she was talking to us like we had no clue what we were doing when in reality the "questions" she was answering are the basics. I had my appointment set for 3pm I walked in there 2;55 I didn't get someone to cut my hair until 3:50 and they didn't even know who was supposed to be cutting my hair, they passed me around to about 5 people and they were just to busy I guess. Everyone that came in before me got back to get their hair cut.Someone with even dye in their hair came to sit and got called back to wash it out while I was still waiting for a chair. Went in for a gentle highlight to break up the roots and cover the gray. My hair was severely damaged with bleach spots and over processing. Worst hair experience of my life. Hair stylist didn't apologize and instructor tried to fix. I'll go back again and instructor will try to fix again. They made me still pay towards the service. It is exceedingly rare that I give a one-star review, and I do not do it lightly. I have gathered my information & sat on it to ensure I do not review out of anger. Paul Mitchell School in Reno, NV has earned this one star. My child has special needs and is a wonderful, sweet, little boy. I did not have to add that last part about his personality for everyone to know that a person with special needs deserves the same treatment as someone without. Paul Mitchell puts on their website about not discriminating against people with disabilities, but I am gathering that is only referring to students. My son needs a hair cut and someone we are extremely close with attends this school and can take on clients. We thought it best for her to give it a go, as she is wanting to further her education working with children who have special needs & he is comfortable with her. When requesting to Douglas Christiansen, for my son to be able to come in and use a private room (in case he does get upset he would not disturb others,) he had informed her that "This is no place for people with special needs." I am absolutely appalled by these words. This incident has already been reported to Human Resources, and I am working on getting in contact with someone in charge to file another complaint. (The initial complaint has been put in by the student/stylist.) I am hoping Paul Mitchell will do the right thing and not tolerate such actions, although I will not be having my son receive any services whatsoever from the school. This is illegal to deny my son services based on his disability. Douglas Christiansen has no business working with the public if this is how he views people with special needs. As I do not like leaving negative reviews, I would like to end this with suggestions for all my friends to places who have been more than happy to "accommodate" my son. It's a school and everyone needs to start somewhere in their education. So keeping that in mind, and don't be in a hurry when you go in. I have had a few friends attend school there and have always been happy with their services. My simple trim costs only $5 but like I said takes 1 1/2 hours because the students need frequent checks and are making sure everything is to your satisfaction. In the past I have received nice great highlights from students too. A really great use of a student is if you have a special event. A couple of times last year I used a student to style my hair for Roaring 20's parties- it came out great. Some people didn't even recognize me a first glance. And it was much cheaper than a regular salon. Down side is once you find a student they graduate in about a year, so you can follow them to a real salon or start over with a new student. read more

Very busy! Students seem confident and capable but don't always hear what you say or ask clarifying questions to be sure we are on the same page. However, I keep coming back because of Rob, one of the instructors. He makes sure my cut is right and I am happy before I leave. I came here in 2020 when working in Reno and had the best haircuts. In 2022 I again worked in Reno again and came here - best haircuts of my life! I moved to SFO recently and drove the 3.5 hours to get my hair cut here because Rob is still working here. You won't leave unhappy as long as he is an instructor here. read more

Students are kind and showing fantastic potential, Lead hair dresser Rob though is less fantastic. I asked for a shaggy mullet and he took several hours to cut a single layer and bangs. Also he told my FP not to cut my hair before color , leading to a huge waste of time and product. The bangs look cute , but he didn't do anything like the picture I showed. Also applied unnecessary pressure to my FP who did my color. Saying it "shouldn't have taken so long" but he wasn't instructing or helping , but instead he was doing another students hair as he was the only instructor on the floor. Also wouldn't allow my FP to cut my hair before coloring , leading to bleaching damaged hair , but then insisted he MUST cut the hair I told him I didn't want ANY length taken off of. Waste of product and didn't care about my consent. I was there for 9 hours , and left with a nice bright blonde , the integrity of my hair is still awesome. (5 stars for my experience) the students deserve a competent instructor though. Don't understand why they were being either micromanaged or ignored. Not a huge fan of Rob. Lead instructor Chris though seems like he was very nice and helpful, but he was not on the floor that day. read more

I took my 3 year old to get a haircut here, Nikki Cenac did such a good job. She was so sweet and patient with my son and the lineup was so straight (he's 3 and a wiggler). She did an awesome job with the fade. She's awesome and I will definitely be following her to a shop for my boys. read more

My daughter's and I went to get a haircut at Paul Mitchell beauty school. We were able to walk in without an appointment and they were able to get each of us a stylist for us in a few minutes. You can get your hair washed, cut and styled for five dollars. They use Paul Mitchell products on your hair and recommend products to use in the future. We were there for about 2 hours so definitely don't show up unless you don't have time or patience. Teachers come by and check up on you and the students during the cut and check at the end and make any changes that need to be fixed. We are all happy with our cut. I would recommend coming here if you are looking for a inexpensive pampering and have some time to kill. read more

Hello! This was my first time ever doing something like this as I've always gone to a single hairstylist. BUT my friend said this would be a great experience and she was right. Although I was a bit nervous I was excited to finally get my hair cut. So here's my experience. I checked in with the receptionist who was sweet and on point. I waited about 10 minutes and my stylist grabbed me to bring me to my chair. She introduced herself (Alex Bain) and asked the right questions. She asked what style am I looking for and if she could see a pic! I showed her my pic and her teacher came by to help her out with a few techniques. She was precise and made absolute SURE she wasn't messing my hair up. Now, I have long straight thickish hair so a lot to work with lol but she did a great job! She made me feel comfortable and we had such good conversation. Now, it did take about 2.5 hours but for $5 it was worth it. I was so happy with the end result as the layers were exactly what I was looking for and my hair feels healthy and smells great. She showed me new product that I could use for my hair type! I was so happy to help her learn her technique and be apart of this! read more

This place is disgusting. I went to this school and I can't tell you how much the staff and owners are money hungry and conceited. I paid $26,000 to go here to be treated like a child and to learn when someone finally decides to teach. A staff member named Rita has nothing better to do but pick on students. She's a hypocrite, liar and overall walks all over students just as much as the rude financial aid lady. Most of the teachers are to busy talking about themselves and their failed accomplishments to teach you an actual lesson on hair. The school doesn't clean, mop, sanitize, and won't fix leaks in the ceilings where water falls on clients all the time. The schools owner owns two school's but can't manage one. Truly barbaric! Can't put everything I saw at this school on here mostly because I know most of it is illegal but was here a year and would not recommend coming here as a client or student. read more

I've had decent experiences over the years. Be prepared to spend a while for an inexpensive service, as the students need to verify with supervisors. But, it's been a pleasurable experience each time. Front staff is warm and welcoming. Facility is clean, bustling with eager students. While eating out yesterday our waitress recommended going to get an inexpensive hair cut at Paul Mitchell the School, after we had asked her for some advise. Today being Saturday we were told that they do not take appointments and that it's first come first serve, so we signed our waivers and waited. Had my friend not been getting her hair cut and colored I would have left but since I had to wait for her I thought, why not? The wait was 1 1/2 hours and the place was not very busy. My friend had gotten a hair color that turned out very nice and I was happy with my trim. However, my poor friends hair was completely butchered by the student. While my friend was understanding and patient, the problem was not with her hair even though she was disappointed. It was the instructor, which was the same rude lady who was running the front desk that was the problem. She really handled the situation poorly. You could obviously see in the young students face that she was embarrassed by the cut she gave my friend. When the instructor approached she said "Do not say anything about the cut and do not disrespect my student, you signed a waiver." I was sitting next to my friend who didn't say anything before the instructor showed up. I was shocked! That instructor was completely out of line and my poor friend left the school feeling confused and sad. If it's a simple trim you would like I'd say sure why not. But if you are looking for something a little more intricate go to a professional salon. You are absolutely a guinea pig at the school. The instructor should learn to have some manners and deal with situations like this instead of being so mean. That was the most disappointing experience of all of this. read more

My sister was visiting for the weekend and decided to get her hair colored while she had some downtime on her weekend away from the chaos of home and work. She made an appt the day before for a 12:15 coloring appt. They told her she would begin with a consult and then they would do the color. I dropped her off @ 12:00 for her 12:15PM appt. She waited for an hour and a half before even getting her consult. Once the consult was completed they began... and after every step of the process took far longer than a traditional, non school, setting - she finally finished. At 4:45PM. Not appropriate. Far too long - school salon setting or not. They were very nice and kind but slow and time consuming. If you have a bit of time - head in here. If you are on a time crunch - head to a salon. This is purely a time vs. money issue. You spend the money or you spend the time. read more

I recently went into Paul Mitchell to get my hair colored and was pleasantly surprised at how great they were! When I walked in I was greeted by either the owner or the head teacher, who was extremely polite and personally introduced herself to me and my friend and ensured me I was in good hands. The woman that was supposed to do my hair did not show up to class that day so Darrin took me on. I showed him the picture of what I wanted and he made sure to ask the teacher a myriad of questions before he even began with my hair. He was extremely friendly and really made sure he gave me exactly what I wanted from the picture, which is all I could ask for in a hairdresser. He had assistance from (Ryan?) who was also very nice and helpful! Overall, I left with a smile on my face and I didn't break the bank trying to achieve what I wanted. If you come here to get your full cosmetology license be warned you will only learn hair. In the first 8 weeks which is called core you do 1 week of spa which is all esthetics and 1 week of makeup and maybe a day of nails if you're lucky. Those weeks will be the only thing you do non-hair the whole time. You can pay an extra $2,000 dollars to do the nail boot camp they offer but even then, it's only a week. You won't even be allowed to sit in the nail section and practice without being removed due to "lack of space". They don't provide anywhere to put your belongings and expect you to put it in your car (this isn't the best part of town and there is constantly people looking into windows & students have had their vehicles broken into.) The student parking lot consists of 20 spots max and the secondary parking is a dead end road not a parking lot. They will literally strip you for every dollar you have, they even make you pay $2 to wear jeans on thursday, even though that's the only day we are allowed to wear color. The building is falling apart, constant leaks in the ceiling, inches of dust build up on the pipes and rafters, mold, broken washing machines, broken shampoo bowls, i could go on. The staff also isn't the most pleasant, they're rude and condescending, and make the environment extremely hard to learn in. If you want to learn full cosmetology, i would take my money and business elsewhere. The only reason i even came to yelp to say these things is because i wish i would've known this information prior to attending as it would've helped sway my decisions. read more

The establishment is the worst place I have ever been. The do not have any accountability. I was told on the phone I could walk in any time between 9am and 4pm no appointment needed. I think this is great. I walk-in at 2:50pm and was told we don't have any walk ins but I can schedule you an appointment. When I told the supervisor what I was told, he said well this is just a school and slammed the door. Where is the professionalism? If you are at school what are you teaching? When we walked up, it was 6 people just sitting around and talking. They had to hit each to get the attention that people where walking in so the could look busy. Coming from out of town this was a huge disappointment. I feel most sorry for the students because of the education they are not receiving. They leave out the fact that you don't get hardly anything in your "kits" they have extra classes at the "school" that cost extra money on top of their 31,000$ tuition.
