I was introduced to this school through a coworker who is currently enrolled to do esthetician services. She invited me over for a facial. I first visited the hair salon and the front desk attendants were very helpful and friendly. Then I went to the location in the back, near the Goodwill store where I received my facial. The students were all very professional. My attendant was knowledgeable, gentle, and accommodating and provided me with a very relaxing and enjoyable "spa-like" experience. I've only had great experiences with this salon, but my best experiences have been with the stylist Jhani. I now only want my hair styled with her & I'll be devastated when she graduates because she's given me the best color and round brush blowouts I've ever had. These people are extremely unprofessional I made an appointment over the phone and asked if they offer any services for children. They responded by saying no which is fine but when I went for my appointment I checked in and waited for 20 MINUTES before someone decided to tell me that children were not allowed. They had two opportunities to say something about that policy. If I asked about services for children then that means that I have a child the receptionist should have said something over the phone. Today I got there 15 min early and there were two young women at the front desk and they told me I couldn't get in until 1pm. I said okay I'd go to some shops in the plaza and come back. Came home and tried to find out if they're open to the public. After a little bit of searching and a phone call I had made an appointment! I was looking for someone new to cut my hair and happened to find the Paul Mitchell school. I was a little nervous because I haven't made any changes to my hair in years and my last hair cut (at my normal place) didn't go so well. I allowed it to grow out for years, it was very long and unmanageable. I was ready for a change. I booked an appointment with the school, granted I thought the person on the phone could have been nicer, but that doesn't diminish my experience. As soon as I arrived I was greeted and asked to have a seat. A few minutes later Holly walked up with a huge smile and greeted me. She immediately put me at ease and I felt confident about my decision to have my hair cut at the school. After I was seated we began discussing options and I asked her to cut my hair for Locks of Love. Holly was very excited about my decision, she put my hair in a ponytail and chopped it off. Holly have me a bob cut ending right below the ears. She continually checked with me to see if I liked it and her teacher barely had to assist, she only came around to watch, check her work and speak to me! Overall everyone was wonderful and nice. I really enjoyed my visit. Holly was able to give me a manageable cut and fix some issues I had with my previous cut, which were my bangs. Thank you Holly and the whole team!!! If you're thinking of getting your hair cut here, there are a few things to keep in mind. 1. This is a school. The hair stylists/artists are learning, so they take their time. This is a good thing! You wouldn't want someone who is just learning to rush through your haircut. 2. Even though they are students, their "work" (your hair) is checked by their teachers throughout the process and after they're finished. The teacher will help them in fixing up any oversights. The teachers are master stylists, so you're essentially getting a master stylist's approval before you leave. In my case, the teacher finished my haircut to show the student how to do a certain technique. I got a master stylist's cut for $14. Not bad. 3. Again, this is a school. It is by no means a spa-like experience. The atmosphere is a bit chaotic, there are people and hair stations everywhere. If you're looking for a relaxing and chill spa experience, you should seek out a spa-like place. This is not that. I had a haircut (trim and shape up) and was happy with the result. I also knew my stylist personally, so cannot speak to being assigned a random student. I did not have color done, so cannot speak to that service. $14 for a haircut is a steal, though. I'd recommend this place if you're looking to have something simple done. read more

This was my first time at the salon and I was surprised that I didn't have to wait around at all. It was very efficient. Kara did an awesome job consulting me on the best way to do balayage and highlighting to achieve the exact look I wanted based on samples I brought in. She also recommended a great way to cut my hair to maintain my long layers while adding more style to it. Her supervisor checked in every step of the way so I felt at ease that I was in great hands. A couple final thoughts, now that I've left the area... One, the school needs to improve in teaching professional courtesy. In particular, they need to use better phone manners. The vast majority of the time, my calls went to vmail & were never returned. If someone did pick up, I was often put on hold & ignored till I hung up. I finally gave up & made appointments by dropping in. Also, keep in mind that they close whenever Howard County public schools do. Since HoCo closes at the first sighting of a snowflake, winter appointments can get cancelled without notice. Neither do they follow up by contacting you to reschedule. So my earlier review about prices & services stands. Just keep in mind that you may need to do a bit more work to get them. read more

I always love coming here to save money. The students are always very welcoming and passionate to do what they're learning. My only issue is online booking (through Yelp) doesn't always cooperate with what the receptionist says. I've seen three different gals and they were all courteous and professional. The instructors are there to oversee things and they are all very kind and knowledgable. Except one. A white lady with blond hair I think. She was so mean and nasty. So the poor rating is mainly due to the fact that I've tried like six times to get my hair done here but only been successful once. They close on weird random days and other times "don't have stylists available now" even though they're clearly moseying around & staring at the walls. I understand it's primarily a school and classes are in session regularly, but I've been to other Paul Mitchell's and they're run like a business. I.e. Someone is always available to do your hair. Even if you have to wait. The one time I did get my hair done wasn't great. I have been a Paul Mitchell customer for a long time, and I just recently moved to the Baltimore area in hopes of finding one nearby. Luckily, this salon in Jessup just opened and I was able to make an appointment for a hair trim and thinning. My initial reaction walking in was that it was rather empty, but I was immediately seated with Heather who was very kind and friendly. When their teacher, Reese, came by and told me I was their first public customer, I felt a bit anxious and nervous, thinking, "What have I gotten myself into?" To my surprise, this was the fastest and best trim I have received at a Paul Mitchell salon. My hair is rather thick, so I am used to sitting in the salon for up to 4 hours just to get a trim and thinning done, but this appointment only took 2.5 hours. Heather did a great job of getting my hair to the desired length, and I could tell she was concentrating hard to make sure it came out well. Personally, I am not a big fan of small talk at hair or nail salons, so I appreciated the time to unwind and relax after a busy week of work. When it came to the thinning part, unfortunately, Heather cut her hand on the scissors and Reese had to finish up, but in the end, everything came out great and I wish the best for this salon as it gains more students and clients. read more

This was my first time at the salon because I am newer resident to the area. After checking reviews I figured I better give this place a try. My student stylist Da'Naisa was very professional and friendly. She nailed the exact colors that I wanted, and double checked with me every step of the way to make sure it was exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, In the middle of the process they had her switch to a another student because she had to attend class even though she wanted to finish my hair. That was still okay though, because I came in with brunette hair and was informed by both student and instructor at the beginning of my appointment that I would be there for a while because I had to get a couple processes in order to achieve the red color that I wanted , and that they would probably have to switch students for part of it. I would give the Instructor an A+ Also, she was very attentive to all the students and even helped apply some of the color to my hair! I was switched to another student name Alyson who was also really great! She finished up the ending of my color, gave me a conditioning treatment, and also cut and blow dryed my hair. Very friendly and easy going girl, who seemed to know exactly what she was doing. Crystal was my amazing stylist. She took her time to ensure that my hair was exactly what I wanted. We looked at color swatches to pick the right red low light and blonde highlight. I'm taking a review I saw that was written in 2015. It is now 2020. I would like to say that nothing has changed since that review was written. Every problem they stated is still a problem today. Before I state the old review I would like to add some more problems I came across while I was enrolled there. You get a kit on your first day which isn't all that great. The kit itself broke within a few months of having it. They don't give you enough dolls to work with, you are struggling to do certain haircuts with the little amount of hair your doll has. The school is supposed to supply you with certain tools to help you with your assignments. Good luck finding any of those things. You're constantly asking everyday if they have this or that and the answer is always is go ask this teacher or no we don't have that right now, Ed should be ordering it soon though. That was a complete lie. If they did have these items it was very little and the teachers would hide it so that they could use it for their classes even though they should be able to be used whenever for our assignments. The teachers show favoritism. Keep track of all your paperwork, they will lose it without a doubt and they don't care. Now here is the review that was written in 2015, and again all of the issues stated in this review are still a problem now in 2020. This school is very unorganized, Stephanie works in the admin office, she is the rudest human being I have ever encountered. The owners are never around, yet they give you their numbers and say you can call them with any issues. The first text you will get a reply, but after that good luck. The learning leaders are miserable and it shows. The students hate the school and it shows. Make this school your last option. They are supposed to show you your records upon request, but good luck on that. The hours are messed up, because the palm scan is always down, so you have to hope that the sign in sheet isn't lost. The owners Ed and Sharon are just money hungry! They could care less about their students and Ed's favorite saying is "how about you miss a few days and just expel yourself." We were promised hours for the hair show in DC and then Ed decided not to give them to the students. Their word is garbage. The culture sucks there. They have no active clubs. The only time we do anything is when it involves raising money for the school. I only stayed at the school because of the Paul Mitchell name. Talk to any current student before you enroll. I went to this school two years ago for color and had a wonderful experience. I recently made an appointment wanting to get a balayage, which is listed as $55-75 or so as a service, which seems reasonable given a student is able to build their portfolio doing this. So after sitting in the chair, the student and the supervisor begin breaking down the price estimate for me, asking if I want a blow dry, etc. They tell me their estimate, which is $180 (including a blow dry, which is $16 alone.) They tell me the cost is because i have long hair - it comes down to about my upper back, nothing crazy. I politely told them that I may need to leave because I had set a much lower budget for this. The supervisor (I did not catch her name, but she was 50s-ish, and had red-pink hair) immediately got snappy and rude with me, and told me that this would be a 300$ service at a salon. Her attitude and this statement made me VERY agitated, as I typically frequent a local certified Paul Mitchell Salon and a baylayage has never costed more than $180, usually in the 150-160 range. The supervisors do not appear to be well versed about their services, nor are they taught basic customer service skills. I understand that this is a school and not a salon, but catching a nasty attitude with a client politely telling her that I may need to come back another time is very telling and disappointing. read more

I understood going in that this is a hair school and the people cutting my hair are learning. However, I'm still paying and tipping for a haircut that should be presentable, the one I got here was not. It was so bad in fact, I had to go to another salon and pay triple what I paid here just to fix it. I asked for a cut with long layers. She cut such a huge chunk off one side that it went half way around my head and that's where my first layer began. When she was done it looked like I had 2 different hair cuts. A short cut in the front and long layers in the back, it looked horrible. Yesterday, I found the Paul Mitchell school salon in Jessup online. I called and got an appointment for the same day! This was super convenient! Knowing a student was going to do my hair, I went in with the attitude that if I come out not liking it, at least this time I wouldn't be out 2-3 meals (as has happened to me twice before since moving to MD), and I could write it off as they were learning. Fortunately, I did not come out writing the place off! I was there early, but I didn't have to wait long. The stylist started on me early! She started with a shampoo, and she explained how it was a good product for my hair type and why. (I was very close to buying the product, but unfortunately it was not in my budget at the moment.) She cut ~2 inches off as requested & shaped it nicely around my face. I am thankful for her conciousness not to cut too much off at first b/c it's easier to cut more than to add it back on! That said, I had her take off another inch to be where I wanted it. No complaints from her, she did just that, and she did it beautifully! When she was finished, the instructor came over and surveyed her work. Though I had no doubts of the stylist's work, this is a huge reason for me to go back just to know I will always have 3 sets of eyes looking for imperfections before I pay and leave! Finally it was time to pay... the lady at the register rang me up for $8! This is a price you can't beat! Just $8 for a shampoo AND a cut! I got exactly what I wanted, and it was super budget-friendly! Just another note simply because when I was looking for a salon, I wanted to go somewhere where people with my hairtype have been and had success. Thus, if you have very simple, straight, virgin-hair (and mine is blonde), this may just be the place for you! I do agree with some other comments that you need to allow plenty of time when you go here, but it's not a consequence to not give the salon 5 stars. Took my 13 year old son in for a hair cut with a student stylist named Brenna. She did such a wonderful job on his hair I decided to save the $150 I usually pay at my McLean, VA hair salon and have her cut and color my hair. Very happy with my cut and style, my grays are gone and I like the darker color she gave me. Plan to spend a couple hours for a cut and color but it's well worth the cost. With a Mothers Day discount it cost me less than $50!! It's been almost 2 months since I got my hair colored and my color still looks great. After years of not having my hair salon colored due to price and horrible results I decided to give the school a try. All I can say is WOW and WOW again I was assigned to Stephanie with Tanya as her advisor/instructor. They took a lot of time listening to me about my color then actually formulated what turned out to be perfect. Because I live and travel in an RV haircuts can be an iffy proposition. Both listened to what I did and didn't want. Tanya knew exactly how it should be done and closely monitored Stephanie. Since its a short cut she actually was showing her new ways to cut and Stephanie was an excellent learner. I highly recommend everyone try here. Cut & color only $40. I was pleasantly surprised when I called at 10am on a Saturday and was able to get in at 1pm for a cut and color! I am from out of town and have been on the road since May with no haircut since Feb so I was a mess! I had pictures numerous pictures of the color, highlights, lowlights I wanted, I was not real concerned about the cut only trim it up, get my bangs out of my eyes. During the foiling process I notice another client a few chairs down with exactly the color I was wanting, so I felt sure my stylist knew after all the pictures and seeing it in person what I wanted. Chunky, dramatic were words used. I was thrilled actually enjoyed the 3.5 hrs of sitting as she and her "partner" were quite friendly. I knew when she started cutting she wasn't taking enough off to even be considered a trim but as long as she got my bangs off my nose I could deal! Not sure how many times I stated I had only been wearing my bangs to the side since they had grown so long, normally just on my forehead as I hate it showing almost as much as side bangs. I kept thinking she must be needing direction from her instructor as she never touched my bangs. After the "blowout" I never requested I put my glasses on a find find subtle blonde highlights and side swept bangs. No sure if she just never heard a word I said and no I never uttered the exact word "lowlights" as I didn't even know it was a word but regardless of correct terminology I had pictures and she saw the other clients hair and knew what I wanted. I don't dislike my hair color, it's actually very nice just not what I asked for. The cut or lack there of well, when I explained for the 5th time I wanted my bangs short on my forehead she proceeded to just basically cut across my forehead and it's a total mess. I am still going to give her a chance to redeem herself in 2 weeks and have lowlights added in and hopefully a legit haircut! At this point I'm in $69 for cut/color/highlights and $10 tip and who knows what the next visit will be but its still less than my last salon visit which was $180! I usually only go to beauty schools for a shampoo+blowdry if im running late somewhere or dont have my usual products/tools on hand while travelling etc. This was the case when I decided to go to this location for a blowdry.. I feel like the a shampoo and blowout has to be the most basic of training for students and by their 6th month they should be able to do a pretty decent job of it. The student I had been given was on her 10th month at school and could barely hold a blowdryer and rolling brush at the same time. Right from the wash to condition to getting through the blowdry I had to keep guiding her on the steps, products and technique that works for my hair type. The instructor who came by to check her work at the end barely looked at my hair and signed off on her work. I wasn't asked for any feedback then and my hair was very visibly still wet by the roots and somewhat frizzy and brittle towards the end because of the lack of serum or heat protector. More than the student not knowing what to do I do think the instructors here are terrible at their jobs and don't do their jobs to teach properly. Everyone around just looked like they were winging it on their own or watching youtube videos to learn what they wanted or needed. Definitely would not be going back to this location. read more

This was my first time going to Paul Mitchell..and of course, I was nervous because it was a school. Do not let that deter you though....Kimberly did my hair and she was amazing :) She gave me a haircut and I have long thick hair. My best part was the shampoo and head massage ;) I loved that they have the teachers come by at the end to check their work. The only thing I would suggest is do not come here if you do not have the time to spare...I think my appt lasted 3ish hours for just a cut. Poor rating is due to professionalism at the front desk. First impressions are so important. I have yet to be spoken to in an acceptable manner since visiting the school several times. Just last week I needed shampoo and conditioner and wanted "professional advice ". I needed to wait while the 2 girls finished the conversation and giggling before being greeted with a "yes". When I ask her she pointed. She did finally come out to show me her recommendation. I most of asked too many questions. I also had my hair colored and cut 1 time at the school and it was beautiful! My experiences here have been pretty hit or miss depending on who I get doing my hair. My hair coloring experience has ranged from good to great. The price is a huge plus. Love coming here for root touch ups because I can get someone else to make sure that they get everything in the back that I can't see. I've had one haircut here and I'm afraid to ever get another one because it's probably the worst haircut I've ever had as an adult. The layers in the back are all different lengths. I'm currently growing it out so I can get someone else to fix it without having to cut all my hair really short. read more

This is the single worst salon I've ever been to. Between the horrible customer service and the terrible job they do on hair I would never recommend anybody to this place. I went in to get my roots bleached to match the rest of my hair and they turned my hair gray. It took them over six hours with both a teacher and student working on my hair and they didn't even give me the proper hair treatment I asked for. I asked for my roots to be bleached a pale yellow like the rest of my hair and to get a moisturizer put in. Instead they bleached my roots a dark yellow and then without telling me decided that to fix it they'd just put gray in to blend it all and then decided that rather than the moisturizing treatment I asked for they'd just give me a strengthening one. My hair was so dry afterwards because they refused to put any hydrating products on it, after I asked them and when I was disgusted with the color because, again, I was just trying to get them to match my roots to my already pale blonde hair they said oh they'd give me my next service for free but still charged me well over $100 for the already terrible service I received. When I set up my next appointment to get the color fixed it turned out that the free service they promised wasn't actually free and that they'd only cover the base cost for a toner and then anything else I would have to pay for, when I asked them why did they lie to me to begin with the teacher said it was my fault because I should know better than to expect them to be able to match my roots and that it's not their fault cause I knew what I was getting into. The teacher was so incredibly rude and kept talking down to me and addressing me as if I was an idiot after she messed up my hair that the manager of the place had to step in and apologize saying she didn't mean to tell me I'd get the entire service for free but that'd she'd stick by it because that's what I came in for. Eventually they pulled a different student over and had them dye my hair with a bright yellow dye which helped get back to the more yellow color I had to begin with. Overall a terrible experience with disgustingly rude staff and I'd give them a -10 star review if I could. Mind you I've dyed my hair myself and it takes less than 2 hours and I've never accidentally turned it gray. I love, love, love this school! I had a great first time experience. My stylist listened to what I wanted which was just a trim and she didn't force me into a hair cut like some stylists do. She was kind, courteous, and professional. Honestly, she did my hair better than my former stylist! I got compliments from coworkers and from complete strangers - in fact a woman in the grocery store waited until I was done in the check out line to compliment me on my hair and ask me how I got it so straight! I was more than happy to tell her it was the Paul Mitchell School and give her my new stylist' name. :) P.S. - My hair is naturally curly and long - just below my shoulders. read more
