All teachers are native speakers of the target language. There are many options to choose from as far as pickups and drop-off times, so it can work with your budget/ schedule. They will take children who are not potty trained yet and actually assist you in that process! Snack is provided by the school. Lunch is provided by the families, or there is an option to purchase a got lunch from a 3rd party who will deliver it. Around $5-6 depending on the options you've chosen. The summer program is also great! They go up to age 6 or 7 depending on the language. I would say the program is a bit more expensive than others in the area, but you are getting language exposure (and possibly potty training help) so I think it's fair. The school also has several accreditations that have minimums standards that must be adhered to and that provides structure that you might not see elsewhere. That costs money, and it's money well spent. The teachers wear gloves when handing out food, there are always dates on lunches Ave water bottles. It's a tighter organization than some. Additionally, the non refundable deposits are higher than other area schools, but again, the school has to secure native language speakers in all three languages for each class level and they need firm numbers. So read the fine print (it's there for you) and don't sign up if you plan on canceling if something you like better opens up. This is not the program to do that with. The learning is play based and my only wish is that it was a little *less* structured. However, I'm unusual in that I prefer a Waldorf type atmosphere, and that's not the usual vibe in this area were people are dreaming of Harvard while baby is still in utero . All in all we've been so happy with Communikids and I hope they start extending their summer program to older kids.

They said the 3 month SAT prep is a National Promo and not something they were doing but they could still help her prepare for the SAT. We decided to try and if not a good fit we'd cancel during the allowed time period. Great. My child attended 2x a week for 90 min and worked on worksheets. No one on one tutoring or lessons or group co-hort. It was loud and boisterous and she compared it to a babysitting service for little kids working on math. If that's what you need then this is the place for you. However look at the contract and all the fine print-it's like a shady gym with many fees designed to keep your money despite poor service. We joined on Nov 14th and paid $453. There was Thanksgiving break- ok. We cancelled on Dec 10th. They had charged us $509 on Dec 1st (2 weeks after joining!) and I asked for a refund for the month of December since she'd only attended 4 classes - one class in December. I explained it's a bad fit for a high school student- it's loud and geared for little kids. Furthermore, tutors are high schools students and not a great fit. They said no we don't charge a penalty for leaving but we can't give you your money back once it has been charged. They dismissed my email with a breezy "we hope you understand." They are a scam. This means we paid $240 for each class. Outrageous. Shameful. Horrible place.

The classes are small, 12-14kids in the class. Looks like academically the school is doing good too. My daughter can read and write already. Knows the same things (maybe even more) than her friends from other schools (public or private).

I know this because I was contacted by those former members. We also had a mixed experience at this school. Academics are weak, but outdoor play/work time was nice and plentiful and the community of families was supportive. We wanted this school to be a success, but over time we we observed more and more troubling disconnects between the school's stated ideals and the reality in the classroom.  This would normally be fixable, but unfortunately we also found transparency and openness to constructive feedback to be an issue. Just two of these disconnects are detailed below: 1.) Although I was repeatedly assured by the director and the Kindergarten teacher that Kindergarteners and 1st graders are provided with consistent phonics instruction, it turned out that balanced literacy was actually implemented i the K and 1st grade classrooms. Had the school leadership been transparent about their approach ahead of time, we would have been able to have made an informed decision (and would not have enrolled our kindergartener.) I would encourage all parents of Kindergarten and 1st grade students to research literacy education and in particular the differences between systematic phonics instruction and balanced literacy. We were surprised at the teacher's lack of curiosity about school-factors that could be influencing our normally well-behaved child, her emphasis on intrinsic pathology, and her decision to wait so long to communicate what she described as a several months-long pattern. Our experience was not unique. Some children appear to do well, and others don't. Our curiosities about this include: - Are the behavioral expectations at Silver Oaks Cooperative School reasonable for all 5-year olds? Is there some normal variation which is not being permitted? - Are the academic expectations reasonable given the choices of curriculum materials (or lack thereof), the emphasis on independent or small-group work, and the somewhat limited daily academic time (as much of the day is spent outdoors, in free-choice, or in electives). Perhaps it is not possible to do and be all things simultaneously. - Are there too many transitions in a Silver Oaks day (most children struggle with frequent transitions / interruptions from their learning and play)? - Are there too many different teachers/caregivers/coopers with different behavioral expectations and do some children struggle with having so many of those transitions? - Are some children bored or otherwise not being fully engaged academically? We were sorry to part ways with the many lovely families we met, but eventually these and other issues were too big for us to ignore.

There are several staff who have been at Carousel for 10+ years, a few who have been there for over 20 years. Others have mentioned the lack of cosmetic updates to the facilities, however, ownership changed hands a year or two ago, and steady improvements to the facilities (new bathrooms, fresh paint) and technology (parent app, door camera and entry system) have been made since. At the end of the day, our children have thrived here, our oldest is doing well in elementary AAP classes and the youngest is nearing the end of his final year. We couldn't have been happier with the way things have gone, especially given the lower price than other nearby facilities, such as bright horizons in the inova complex. 10 years after nervously dropping off our first infant, barely 90 days old, we'd do it all over with Carousel. A deep thank you to all of the staff who work tirelessly so that our children get needed attention and care while we are off pursuing our careers. Kudos to you all.
