Our needs are different and might need a variety of options with time and money to make it more affordable to consider joining. I would have given a 5 star if they are more flexible with the cost and hours.

When I brought my daughter to her class, I overheard the following comments from the director and some other teachers in the pre-k class "oh, stop whining", "don't be a cry baby", "(behind an angry little boy) nobody talks to him, don't say or do anything to him". I thought it was weird but I didn't think too much. My daughter is very outgoing and playful. She was also advanced compared to other kids her age. When she went to pre-k, the teacher only taught the class to sing and dance all day. After a couple of weeks, when she got to preschool class, I realized I couldn't find her on the camera during nap time. When I called in a couple of times to ask where she was, I was simply told she was sleeping in the corner. I trusted the teacher, didn't question anything. The teacher didn't tell me anything about my daughter. A few days later, I saw my daughter's bedsheet and pillow thrown on the floor in the corner of the classroom on camera, but I couldn't see her. I waited for 30 minutes to see if the teacher was going to do anything. Nothing happened. So I called in to ask if she was okay. The teacher blamed her for keep throwing her pillow to the floor, so they just left her alone, in the corner of the classroom where neither teacher nor the parent could see. The director explained it as if she agreed with what the teacher was doing. Then I asked what she was mad about; I didn't get the answer. I guess they didn't know. They didn't bother to find out why she was mad. I was told she had had problems napping for some time. I was wondering why no one told me anything about this. I started to pay more attention to the camera throughout the day. I found that every single day, my daughter was the only one who had to sleep under the rack where all kids' backpacks were hanging above her bed. That's also a blind spot on the camera so I wouldn't find out if I don't keep staring at the app. She was the only kid who got to sleep there, far away from other kids, during nap time every day. The teacher would sit next to all the other kids, pat them to sleep and keep patting them for hours. My daughter was left in the corner, by herself, sad and mad without any help. I started to think about it: I never see her teacher comforting her, or simply giving her a hug. One day, I stepped out of my office early to check out my daughter during nap time. My husband was checking the camera to see what was going on while I was driving: my daughter was left crying for over half an hour while both of the teachers were sitting with the kids who already fell asleep. When I finally saw my daughter, tears were all over her face. She ran to me and told me "shhhh", as if that's all she was told, just to be quiet. My heart was broken.....I wonder why the teacher just cannot sit with her for some time. Why the teacher just doesn't want to play with her. Since other kids are already sleeping, why cannot the teacher cannot free their hands and help her? If you hate my daughter so much, why has no one told me what I need to do about it? I cannot imagine how helpless she must feel all this time. I pay almost $450 a week just so you can do this to my daughter??? And the teacher hides her outside of the camera as if everything is perfectly fine. How convenient?! 3 y/o is when the kids start to develop their values and social skills, and this is the first thing you want them to learn? To single out those you don't like?

My son gets lots of outdoor play time. No there isn't a playground but rather large green areas with sand pits coupled with kitchen utensils, toys nature gift to them, your kids imagination, his friends and all the little bug friends as playground. Julie is the fearless leader of the school who is very caring and goes above and beyond to provide a positive and educational environment for all the children and their parents. It's a community based school that includes everyone! As such, you'll meet awesome parents and be part of a very supportive community. All of the teachers love their job and the children. They genuinely love being there and greets each child by name. The classes are small (think 6-7) so your child will never be lost in the crowd. Personalized attention, anyone? Oh also it's ok if your child isn't potty trained yet. The teachers will help you with that! They had me sold at potty-trained not required! I mean nature develops at its own time but most other schools don't seem to believe that. Sure, you have plenty of options in the NOVA area but none are like ERS. I would highly recommend you put ERS on the top of your preschool list so you and your precious little one won't miss out! I'm so glad I did!

When cultural food was brought up, they described it as parental "preference," thus dismissing culture (and the food that is associated). They make allocations for religious and philosophical reasons, but not for culture. I find this to be concerning, esp. the idea of children being fed restaurant food, which I don't consider to be necessarily a healthier option. I believe parents should be the ultimate arbiters of their child's diet, not a school.

Val has taken over and totally revamped the daycare center that for many years was named The Kay School. We interviewed at The Kay School before Covid-19 shut everything down and were impressed by the facility, which is large enough for four classrooms (although Rising Stars only has three class rooms open as of now) but not so big that it felt impersonal. The building is actually an old barn that has been retrofitted as a school, which creates a charming/welcoming environment for the kids. There is a great playground area in the back with a pavilion, multiple swing sets, raised stage and blacktop. We met Val when we re-interviewed in the Summer of 2022 and were very impressed by what she was doing with the facility and curriculum under her new ownership/management. Val has run her own in-home daycare for several years and has a loyal following of families who followed her over to Rising Stars which was telling for us since she was previously in Sterling (not that far away, but the fact all of her families stayed on at the new location gave us a lot of comfort!). We are so happy to have locked in a spot with Rising Stars toddler class and have been very happy with the staff (dedicated teacher) and the technology-forward communication Val has implemented (all communications, photos of your kids - if you opt in, and billing is all handled through a central app/website). We receive updates daily on our son's activities and have been impressed with the variety of outside and inside curriculum that he has been exposed to at Rising Stars. We then went to the school for a tour and met Ms. Komala, our son's primary teacher. At first meeting, our son felt very comfortable with her and he never forgot her name even tho it took us about 4 months before starting in class- she sure gave him a good impression and really showed us how much she cared for the children. I have so much good things to say about the school. I have recommended them to my friends and coworkers who also had good experience with them. My daughter is part of such a warm and welcoming environment, so much so that they even invited parents to come in and contribute towards a special event yesterday to better understand and appreciate the importance of Lunar New Year to my family and the other families that celebrate.
