I had an amazing experience! My student stylist was Bri. She had great attention to detail, took her time, and ensured I was comfortable throughout the process. She did a full lift from black to blonde on 4A hair. My hair was extremely dry and tangled when I entered the salon. I was amazed and so grateful for not only to Bri but her teacher Ro. Ro took the time to break down every process and provided recommendations for myself. I was there for 7 hours which i didn't mind because I stressed taking their time and I got the opportunity to watch 20+ stylist. Absolutely no. I emphasized subtle coloring techniques when I came in as I am a brunette. I made the comment that I don't look well with blonde highlight. When I was showing her inspiration pictures, the instructor asked what I specifically likes about each and I made it VERY clear I wanted subtle color and a change in style. I did say I wasn't super picky about what happened within those parameters, but what I received was a complete mess. I showed the stylist and instructor a "painted on" looking BROWN highlights with a medium length layered haircut. What I ended up with is a one length, bleach blonde hair style with the worst highlights I have ever seen in my entire life. The highlights are halfway down my hair with very distinct lines of where she applied the brush marks. The instructor made multiple comments insinuating that she knew the girl messed up (for example, ways they could fix it, how she could change the technique) and tried to coax me into agreeing with the hairstyle at the end, not even checking it because she knew how bad the girl messed up. I asked for brown highlight as after the instructor seen that my hair was bleached she asked me if I was alright going blonde instead. I said that I would prefer to be brown like what I suggested initially, but then agreed to do a dark ash blonde because at the point my hair was bleached to, brown was nearly impossible. At the end of my 6 hour long session, the instructor tried convincing me how great it looked and if I was so happy forgetting the fact that I could hear all the mistakes they were trying to correct. I will post pictures if anyone is interested. Please just don't waste your time. Lucky for them, my appointment was at 10 and I had a meeting at 4 (right around the time they finished my hair, yes 6 hours for a bleached hair style) so I just left. Even if I didn't have a meeting, I would not want to stay to have the same people who ruined my hair attempt to fix the disaster they created. This was he worst hair experience I have ever had. If you're going to be cheap and get a bang for you buck, remember hair correction is always more expensive than just having a true professional do your hair in the first place. My healthy long brown hair is now a bleach blonde mess that is going to cost me a fortune to fix. read more

Absolutely disgusting!! The dye job looks like my roots have been growing out for 4 months. It was supposed to be a balayage but it turned out to be a hack job. They weren't going to fix it until the instructor saw how terrible it looked. They tried but didn't fix ish!!!! Second time around looked the same. I like the style and aesthetic of the salon. I went on a Monday evening for a cut & style, facial and conditioning hair mask. There was a special running so the total was $40 for all services. While I did have to wait about a half hour past my appointment time, the front desk asked if I wanted a bottled water. The instructor, Natalie, was fantastic along with the student, Emily. I was cutting several inches off and changing the style so I showed both of them pictures of what I wanted and what I didn't want. We talked about the length of my hair several times and they checked in with me a lot throughout the process to see if I wanted to go shorter. As the instructor was explaining various things to the student about handling curly hair, I was able to ask a few questions and learn a couple of things. The facial was done while I was laying back in the shampoo chair (as my hair was soaking in the conditioning mask) which was a tad uncomfortable in the low back for an extended period of time. The facial consists of a variety of cleansers, exfoliants and a moisturizer (no steam and no extractions). It felt great though and I was glowing. I was there for a total of 2 hours. I did give the student a cash tip which I had read on here was expected although I did not see a tip line when I paid for the service on my credit card at the front desk. If you are willing to be a little patient and have the ability to explain what your expectations are, you should be more than satisfied. read more

This place has really declined over the years. Their customer service is crap, they don't care if you are waiting 15 to 20 minutes. My appointment was at 5:30 today, and after 17 minutes of waiting in the lobby, I had enough and decided to leave. I told them to cancel my appointment. The guy behind the desk just said "OKAY!" No explanation or apology that were running late. It was almost as if he was like "ok, who cares..." I get that these are students, and they take more time than regular stylist, however, I don't want to wait in the lobby 17 minutes after my appointment time with no explanation or heads up that you're running late. Also, 5:30 is right after their lunch/break time. It's not like they have students that run over into other appointments. I'll never come here again... I don't mind sitting in a chair and allowing a student to take their time with my hair, but sitting in the lobby waiting 17 minutes after my appointment time is crazy. read more

If you are looking for a great salon experience DO NOT GO HERE. It is a school. You are their guinea pig. There were so many issues the story is too long to type. I aksed if someone can do African American hair. The person that put on my hair did not have that experience I asked for a deep conditioner when I called. That was not documented on my request My appt was at 530. Someone did not grab me to begin until 550. After I was at the salon for almost 2 hrs I refused the service to continue even when the instructors offered to finish. And I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR THEM WASHING IT AND I LEFT WITH WET HAIR. And the instructions made me seem like i was racist and racially biased bc I wanted someone with experience on my hair texture to do my hair. The worst experience ever. The school doesn't deserve any stars! Absolutely horrible experience. I have been going to this school since the month that it opened. I've received countless services from students from color to cut to styling. I also have attended beauty school so I more than understand that these are students that are learning as they go. The issue is mainly with the staff. The learning leaders are rude, unprofessional, and inexperienced. My service today was a root touch up. Very simple. I have been doing the same formula for ten years. I always bring my formula since I'm seeing different students. The "instructor" decided to tell me my formula was wrong. I explained I've been doing the same formula for years. After some back and forth I gave in and trusted the "instructor." end result? I walked out with dark roots that don't match the rest of my hair! Years ago the instructors would come inspect the service at the end and sign off on it however, this instructor that only didn't check the work, but from the very beginning of my appointment, I caught her blatantly, rolling her eyes and mocking me! Not only is this a teacher, she's also a grown ass woman. Did I mention she was wearing a one piece see-through, white leotard. I could see her underwear and everything else. Again, I've been a student. Teachers are supposed to be getting you ready for the real world and a professional environment. Not only her horrible/ghetto attitude and appearance, but absolute lack of knowledge in the field. A few months back when I had the same service with the same student. I asked to not be styled. I preferred to walk out with towel dried hair, seeing as I have long, thick, curly hair. However, this time I asked to be styled, so I would be able to see how the color turned out since I was questioning the change of my formula. In the process of attempting to detangle my hair, so much hair was pulled out when it was washed. When we got back to the chair, I offered her my own detangling brush that I brought with me and the instructor stepped in and said the student would be using her own tools. Keep in mind I have always brought my own brush to the school and never had an issue. I asked her if she would at least be using some kind of detangler and she did not! It was painful, and I lost so much more hair during that second detangling. I could also feel my hair being broken and damaged in the process. I observed the quality of service going downhill the last three years, but out of convenience, I came back. It was a simple service. However, now it's not worth going to the school, even if the services are free. anyone going to any kind of beauty school understand that these are students especially since we are signing a consent form. However, this is a large city and there's countless beauty schools. Choose another one. I've tried them all from Aveda, Maria, Tricoci, etc. do not go to Paul Mitchell school on Halsted. I only wish I could review the school directly on their website to deter potential students from signing up. I observe the type of education these students are getting and it's horrible and definitely not worth paying for. read more

I have been a regular customer for two years until recently. During the holidays, I went in for a color change. My natural hair color is chocolate brown and the previous stylist had colored it too dark (1N). The supervisor advised me she wanted to lift color by bleaching it and I quickly nixed that idea. She then proceeded to advise me that without that process I would not get the color I wanted. What happened to color washouts? Why are stylists so desperate to bleach? She asked me to sign a waiver stating I was advised the color may not come out as I envisioned or at all. Well, the student stylist Bianca left the color on too long and my hair turned red. My hair caught the color a little too much, wouldn't you say? The photos do not lie. Please do yourself a favor and do not go here. Paul Mitchell is a great beauty school to visit for hair services. The students are still learning, so each visit can be a little different. I have very coarse 4a/4b (curl type) natural hair, so I often worry if I will end up with a student that is unfamiliar with how to properly straighten my hair. Some students are better at doing it than others, but normally an instructor will step in and show the student a better technique at straightening if they are having trouble. I've never walked out of Paul Mitchell with below average hair, because they always make sure you are happy with the style. I've only gotten the specialty deep conditioning treatments and iron work here, so I can't comment on other services. Both the Awapuhi Keratriplex and Marula Oil deep conditioning treatments are amazing, but I felt more of a difference with the Marula deep conditioner. I've gone to about 3 other beauty school chains in the past (Pivot Point, Regency(now closed), Mario Tricoci), and I feel that Paul Mitchell has the best products and facilities out of all of them. Some of the other beauty schools have lower prices, but Paul Mitchell still has lower prices compared to traditional salons. My only two annoyances when I come here is that my T-mobile cell phone gets terrible reception in here, and that the parking meters only go up to two hours. Both are not the fault of this school at all, but just giving you a heads up in case you have T-mobile or drive to your appointment. read more

I've been living in Chicago for almost 2 years now & have gone to several salons ( Bang, Joseph Michaels, etc.) & after leaving the professional salons I didn't really feel like I was getting that much bang for my buck..so I decided on a whim I would go to Paul Mitchell. I called & was able to get an appointment the next day. I gotta admit I was kind of nervous at first because I'm pretty particular about my hair, but was relieved that I was paired with Lauren H. She is awesome!!!! Before getting started we went over what color I wanted for my hair. I already had a red tone that I got dyed at a different salon but my jet black roots were coming through & desperately needed to be tamed. I went w/ a violet red w/ a red shine top coat..I wanted to go a little lighter since summer is around the corner, but I also stressed that I don't want my hair to turn orange either. Lauren did a great job & let me know what was going on throughout the process. I also didn't feel like I was sitting for hours in the chair waiting around for her, she was very attentive. Cut, color & style cost me about $60 (not including tip). I think it was definitely worth it especially b/c when I've gotten my hair cut & colored at other salons it typically cost me over $100 minimum. So the haircut I got here today was my worst haircut ever. I went to the school today since my husband had the day off and my mom was visiting so my kids had someone to watch them. I called ahead to let them know I would be a few minutes late because of a big accident. Even with me being a little late, my stylist took another twenty minutes to come get me. My stylist only partially listened to what I wanted and kept trying to change my mind on what I wanted. The main thing was that it look good in a ponytail (it's my signature "mom" look). Talking and trying to get her to understand what I wanted and the washout took an hour. She seemed very confident in all her abilities so I figured she must be slow but good and she probably just wanted to cut hair how she likes it. I was nervous with how long it took but I desperately needed a haircut (my previous worst haircut was the one before this). After several attempts to help with the cut, the learning leaders just kind of gave up on her. Again, I should have just stopped but she had changed up the angle on my bangs and I thought it looked good so I kept going. As she was drying my hair, I told her to just do it quickly as possible since I needed to go (I'd already been there for 2.5 hours). She proceeded to dry and "style" my hair. Tip: if your stylist is styling your hair when you specifically ask them not to, he or she messed up and doesn't want you to know. I kept saying I needed to leave but she insisted each time she just needed a couple more minutes. Finally I said I'm leaving and she told me she hadn't finished my bangs yet. So I stayed even longer. I told her I liked it just to get out, but my hair was never checked by any of the learning leaders which amazed me. That's kind of the most important part to check... But I thought it was probably ok and the consult/wash/cut took over three hours as it was. Later I checked out my hair and found out she had missed pieces of hair completely. It isn't even as obvious in pictures as it is in person. I also wanted my hair to be more textured at the ends and instead it's just a blunt cut. Hopefully I've finally learned my lesson to pay more, but I seem to always go back to budget cuts. I'll include some pictures as proof of how poorly the cut turned out. read more

If you're going there, you know you like it cheap cheap. Every time you go, you have to sign your life away so they know you won't sue them. They just want to make sure you understand that students are working on your hair, so don't expect too much. I do like going there and I have been there several times. However, I stopped going because I could never find the time to go. If you go, be prepared to spend an eternity there. The students have to get their teacher's approval before they start to work on you. Waiting on the teacher to approve takes the longest time. And they have to get a dozen approvals, not just one. I usually go get a cut and a dye job. I have dark black hair. In order to dye it red (fire-engine red), they need to bleach my hair first. I usually have to stay there for 5-6 hours. I'm always the last customer to leave. If you dislike your cut/color, they will offer you a free redo. I had a redo twice. I'm always happy the second time around. I always had a Phase One student, and it's fine. I try to get the same girl, but for some reason the ones I like are gone by my next appointment. The environment is nice. It's clean and comfortable. Everyone is friendly there. Every time I wanted my bangs to be trimmed, one of the teachers do it. I have never seen a Phase One student do it, so that might be a good thing. Be patient if you decide to go there. They are still learning and they try to do their best. read more

When you're a girl with curls and trying a new salon, what a comfort it is to be greeted by a stylist with curls! Taylor, the "future professional" who cut my hair, was actually at phase 1, but her teacher guided her before she started each section of my hair. I brought a picture of the style I got last summer and just asked for that. The teacher would cut a little, and then Taylor continued on her own. In true teacher fashion, the teacher would ask Taylor what kind of cut or product she should use on my hair, and then corrected her if she guessed wrong. :P Note that this is a school, so the students work more slowly than professionals. But do you really want a student stylist to tear through your hair quickly? I arrived early for my appointment and left 1 hour 40 minutes later. I made my appointment first thing in the morning. In the end, my hair looked almost exactly like the style I got last summer. It was just a tad shorter than I wanted, but the shape was the same. And it was only a fraction of the price! Of course, Taylor had to go through the spiel and advertise the Paul Mitchell products, but I'm happy with my current regimen. Most shampoos and conditioners dry my hair the day I use them, and then my hair is soft and curl-tastic the next day. Well, Paul's stuff dried out my hair too. Will have to see tomorrow if the curls are soft again... So although I say nay to the products for dry, curly hair, I still highly recommend Paul Mitchell the School for an inexpensive, quality haircut. read more

I came here for a haircut and a balayage but wanted the hair dye to primarily highlight my face (partial highlights). This did not happen. I wanted a basic haircut and I got that. But the color barely showed in my hair after I spent 5 hours there, and there is absolutely no face-framing highlights. Pretty disappointed with the coloring job, and they offered to fix it if I came back within that week but I told them that I had to go on vacation. They said they couldn't do that. And now I feel like I didn't get what I came in here for (a face-framing look). I understand that they're all students but the learning leaders are supposed to guide them to do it right. I don't think that was done here. The student did a good job of following instructions though and could tell that I wasn't too happy with the results but it wasn't her fault so I left a tip. read more

I was being seen by Tracy a couple of years ago (3-4 times) until she graduated. I took a hiatus from Paul Mitchell, but recently went in for a cut and color (ombre) and was worked on by Symyra. I have VERY long/thick/straight hair and always go into PM with the mindset that if anything goes wrong I can 1. always have it fixed and 2. my hair will grow back in 5 minutes anyway (I swear it grows like weeds). With that being said, I generally don't have much anxiety about being worked on by students (phase 1 or 2). I asked for lots of layers and movement and that was the cut Symyra gave me. I asked for a subtle ombre and that's also what I got. I will say though, that I did contemplate going back to have her lighten the ends some more, but that is essentially my fault anyway considering I asked for "subtle." All in all, I would recommend Paul Mitchell if you have the patience/time and aren't going to have a heart attack if something doesn't go exactly the way you envisioned. This is, afterall, a SCHOOL and you get what you pay for (which is peanuts in comparison to a "real" salon). read more

Came here for a haircut and keratriplex treatment! The prices are very reasonable. However, please note tips are encouraged here. At other schools that I have been to for cuts (Aveda), the students are actually not allowed to receive tips. My haircut was basically a clean-up/trim, so I had a great experience! My stylist was really great and conversational (but not over the top). She gave me a great blow-out for the styling! I also added a keratriplex treatment to my services. I actually have really healthy and shiny hair, but wanted to see what a hair treatment would do. Overall, I didn't really notice a difference (not sure if it's because I already have healthy hair). Getting hair work done at the School is a great value and it's most likely you'll leave happy.** I dislike the amount of time it takes to get hair work done at the School. A simple trim - one length, nothing fancy, can take as long as an hour. But it's a teaching school and student stylists check with their teachers throughout each process, cut, color, whatever. Personally I have more time than money so this works well for me. Students are either in Phase I or more advanced Phase II. I've had both levels cut my hair, shave it off, color it, do semi-permanent color, added high-lights and low-lights. Great results except once, One time I got home and realized the color looked like I'd done it myself. I went back and the color was redone, perfectly that time. The manager refunded the entire price I'd paid originally which was nice because I did come away with a great cut and color although it took a long time x 2. **You'll leave happy if you communicate what you want to both the student stylist and the teacher, then listen to what you're told, then monitor what's happening to your head. If you're not satisfied, say so and give the student a chance to change or rectify their work. Or ask that the teacher take over. They want you to be satisfied. read more

If you're looking for coloring, I do not recommend going here if you want something that requires bleaching. Go to the Aveda school instead. I called ahead, explained in detail what I wanted & the shade of my current hair. I was told that it would be no problem. When I arrived, the teacher was pulled over and I was informed that there was no possible way to get my hair to look the way that I wanted it. I explained that I had done that same exact look in one sitting at a salon before, and I asked her to explain why they couldn't do it. She asked me how the previous salon did it. I did my best to explain what I remembered, and she told me that if it required multiple processes, that they couldn't do it because it's a beauty school and that they didn't do those there. I asked her what I could do instead, offering to go with the darker purples in the picture I showed her. She gave me no options. I got up and left. I appreciated the honesty, and I get that bleaching can take some time, but my hair really isn't that dark, and I was given 0 alternatives. In contrast, when I went to the Aveda school before, they were excited to give me the hair I wanted. It caused 0 damage to my hair and looked great. I really would have liked to have been informed about the limitations of their ability to lighten hair before I wasted my time going. It was a bummer. And it seemed odd that the students aren't taught how to lighten hair from even a light-medium brown color on actual clients. That being said, the atmosphere felt nice, and I'm sure that some of the stylists are very talented. I probably won't be going back, but it's probably safe for a cheap haircut. read more

Just moved to the south loop in June and had to find a new hair stylist that wasnt going to brake the bank. After being with one stylist for the past 12+ years I was very hesitant to find a new one. But my roots and dead ends couldnt take the neglect any longer. So I hopped on Yelp to find the nearest salon with good ratings and within my price range. There was many salons... some had good ratings but there were more with high prices and bad reviews... until stumbled on the Paul Mitchell School. I was very hesitant to let students touch my hair because I have been with the same girl for soooo long. But I had to remember... that is where I found my last hair stylist was when she was in school! So I called to set up an appointment for a cut and color. Fast forward to my appointment- Jason was the lucky one. I came in with a picture of the cut and color I wanted. Jason walked me through the consultation, the teacher also re assured me that everything I wanted was doable! Once Jason finished my hair he gave me his product recommendations, and sold me on the AMAZING dry shampoo which is now my favorite (Paul Mitchells Invisible Dry shampoo). I made another appointment for 8 weeks later to get a hair cut to to keep the ends healthy. Fast forward another 8 weeks! Jason worked his magic once again! I love my hair! And made another appointment for the 22nd of December! So glad I found Jason and this School. You made a forever client! read more

If there was negative stars I'd choose -100. This work environment is horrible and they treat their employees like crap, then don't value nor care about them. They just care about their image and money!!
