Last week I was really dreading having to do my own hair. The thought of just having to wash, shampoo condition and do something with my thick curls was just not appealing to me. Lol (ain't nobody got time for that). Long story short, I came across John Amico School in Oak Forest. They were offering 20.00 to shampoo and straighten my hair. Like 20.00 actual dollars. That's even less than half of what I pay to get my hair done. At first I was apprehensive, but decided to give it a try. When I arrived I paid for services up front before they paired me with a student beautician. I ended up paying 26.00 dollars because I requested a hot oil treatment for my hair as well as a keratin spray for protection during the straightening process. They paired me up with the most caring and meticulous student, JAIDA. She spent so much time with my hair to make sure that it was clean and straight as possible with minimal heat. During the whole process an instructor would randomly come by to make sure that I was being taken care of. An instructor at least came by 4x (did I mention I have thick hair ). They wanted to make sure my hair was clean enough since it's so hard to get to my scalp from all the bush on top and they also made sure that Jaida straightened well enough. Overall the whole process was great! I paid 26.00 dollars for something that normally cost me much more. I have never paid 26.00 dollars in my whole young life to get my hair straightened. I will definitely be back. SN: Be prepared to spend some time here. It already takes time to get your hair done at the salon. Since students will be doing it, they might need extra time. Just clear your calendar for most of the day. Lol SN 2: They were offering eye brow waxing for 3.50 Okay, I'm done. Hope this review was helpful!

I never knew I could go there for salon services until a friend tipped me that she goes there for a conditioning scalp massage every couple of weeks. I check out the website and find they offer a wide variety of services and the prices are beyond belief. Yesterday I determined that my roots needed a touch-up, which I normally handle myself (highlights with my stylist). I arrived and immediately noticed the friendly atmosphere. Smiling students. Smiling clients. At reception, I was warmly greeted and assured they would handle my services (I added a manicure). Short wait and I was meeting my student stylist who had me sit at her station and conferred with the instructor about the color and technique. The facility is clean, clean, clean. I'm not kidding when I tell you they treated me like a valued customer. It was almost surreal. I mentioned the customer service aspect to my stylist and she agreed, saying that this is a big focus at the school. They want every client to feel comfortable and satisfied. While my color was developing she took me to the manicure area. Very nice, basic manicure (no cutting) with a terrific hand/lower arm massage. They do a double shampoo - thank you, thank you, thank you. Who doesn't love to have their scalp massaged? Followed with a nice blowout. Both of the instructors and my stylist thanked me for coming in and hoped they would see me again. All that for $22.00. I did tip as well. Because it is an educational facility, the students have their work checked before, during and after the services. Plan on giving yourself plenty of time, they are not rushing to get you out the door. I am told Saturdays are very busy. I was there on a Thursday evening and it was fairly peaceful. I can see this becoming a regular destination. Facial, sure. Conditioning scalp massage, give it. No more doing my touch-up at home, indeed.

Cherice Taylor is the Making It Sew Fun director and teaches sewing classes for adults and children…read morein her home sewing studio. She is very hands-on and patient with her students, but she does expect for students to learn her techniques and be open to building on them. I have had the pleasure of receiving her instruction since April and she has even taken time to help me with my personal, non-class related sewing projects. I recommend her class to anyone who has little to no sewing experience. Even if you sewed years ago and want to sharpen your skills, Cherice is for you!

We built our own trademarked curriculum, You Can Make It, around a simple conviction: quality sewing education should be accessible, hands-on, and taught with genuine expertise and care — and that's exactly what we've created here. Our seven-level program takes you from your very first stitch through advanced construction, with tissue fitting woven in at every stage — because the most valuable skill we teach isn't following a pattern, it's learning to adapt one to your own body. That's the difference between owning a skill and just completing a project. We teach both adults and youth. Our youth program runs as after-school during the school year (September–May), and a Saturday summer sewing camp for kids looking to keep building skills outside the school year. What sets our studio apart isn't just curriculum, it's culture. Students learn alongside instructors who've spent years mastering this craft, and alongside each other — sharing struggles, celebrating breakthroughs, and building genuine friendships around a shared interest. Many of our students started as strangers and became each other's biggest supporters. Visit makingitsewfun.com to explore our full program lineup and register for a class.
