Really disappointed to see Patty's closed during one of the most vibrant and community-driven events in the city -- the Hyde Park Blast. It's one thing to close early, but to post a handwritten sign calling the event "stupid" was shockingly unprofessional. It's figuratively and literally more than a bike race, it's a fundraiser that supports cancer research and survivorship through the CancerFree KIDS Pediatric Cancer Research Alliance. It brings thousands of people together for a cause that matters deeply, while also creating one of the most electric, family-friendly atmospheres you'll find in Cincinnati. From a business perspective, this was a massive missed opportunity. The streets were filled with people eager to support local shops and enjoy the events which is exactly the kind of audience any small business would hope for. Instead of welcoming that energy, Patty's turned it away and insulted the very people walking by their storefront. I love supporting small, local businesses, but this kind of response shows a disconnect from the community that makes Hyde Park special. I hope they reconsider how they respond to events like this in the future. read more

I had been here many years ago to find a local cheese popcorn like Garrett's in Chicago, it was good, but it wasn't close. Well, I read a Yelp review that said it was now really close, so I trotted down there for a bag. Let me tell you, it's pretty damn close. And it's really yummy. While there, I fell in love with the black truffle movie theater butter flavor, and now i offically have an adiction. This will be dangerous as I live 3 blocks away and love popcorn, like had to go to the hospital to get my stomach pumped once from too much, love popcorn. So, you can trust my opinion. After failures to find a popcorn place where I live, I drove to Patty's on a Sunday afternoon when I was in town in February. Due to street parking meters, this was perfect as the meters are free. (This is almost like being in Chicago and going to Garrett's popcorn, except having to hop out of the car at the store and then stand in line ...) Patty's reminds me of Garrett's popcorn out of Chicago, but with its own charm. You can see them making/mixing the popcorn behind the counter. Unlike Garret's they have a huge variety of candy. The employees were friendly and the person (manager?), opened a bag of cheese corn in order to give me a sample. The sample was beyond generous. Finally a popcorn place that has wet cheese! I was super impressed and walked out with their largest bag of cheese corn, some cheesy grippo's popcorn and the Chicago mix. My family from Chicago were all impressed with the mix. The chessy Grippos was spicy and fine, but not my style. I brought a bag of the Chicago Mix back after two weeks to the wife. It was still fresh enough and disappeared quickly. I look forward to my next visit to Cincinnati and stealing away from the family to get some of this great popcorn. read more

This place is adorable and the staff is SO FRIENDLY and knowledgeable. Though the place the is tiny, it is stocked full with goodies and multiple flavors of popcorn! They have everything from chocolate to gummies, Harry Potter Chocolate wants and even peanut butter dog treats. The main event is of course popcorn and you can even watch them make it behind the counter. In the front, they have samples you can try before you buy it and if you have any questions feel free to ask the staff. Today they said there signature flavors were the caramel corn and their seasonal cranberry mix that also contains white chocolate. After trying a couple I went with the Chicago twist (caramel and cheddar) and cookies n cream. The cookies n cream even contains bits of oreo throughout the bag! I definitely recommend stopping here soon to buy some treats for the holidays or just to treat yourself! A 7 oz bag of popcorn was only $4.95. I love stopping into Patty's Old Fashioned Popcorn whenever I'm in Hyde Park Square; it's such a throwback little shop with fun snacks, and not so surprisingly, they have fantastic popcorn! What I never expected was that Patty's would be integral to my wedding planning process as I started to identify welcome gifts for our out-of-town guests. We absolutely love Garrett's popcorn in Chicago... well if you are anything like us and live in Cincinnati and don't have access to Garrett's everyday you have found its match! Patty's popcorn is an old fashioned, popcorn, candy, and ice cream shop quaintly tucked away in Hyde park. The popcorn from there is superior to anything else we have tried of it's kind. We often get popcorn from there to watch a movie at home. They have a large variety of flavors. Some of our favorites include movie theatre popcorn, truffle popcorn, and the cheddar corn. Everything is always fresh and served with fast friendly service. I love having this place so close to home and look forward to many more future visits. I visited Patty's Old Fashioned Popcorn a few weeks ago on a visit to Cincinnati. I love flavored popcorn so I was super stoked to get some. I ended up choosing 7oz bags of white cheddar and rainbow. I didn't eat them day of and had the popcorn a half of a week later. The popcorn was still very fresh when I started eating it! I really liked the funkiness of the white cheddar and the rainbow reminded me of shave ice or snow cone flavored syrup. I enjoyed both bags of popcorn and would definitely support this business again if I come back to the area. read more

Wow! I honestly am not even a huge popcorn fan, but this place blew me away! It's kind of like a hidden gem that we stumbled across when we went out for the Hyde Park Blast. My boyfriend and I had friends who live there and we noticed this shop off of one of the main side streets. My boyfriend LOVES popcorn, so initially all we did when we walked by was take a pic outside. However, later that night (at almost 12a that Saturday), we were walking by and they still appeared to be open and music was pumpin.' The owner, DJ, came out to greet us and enticed us inside with a few popcorny puns! He was so hospitable as soon as we got inside. He gave us so many free samples, as he stood behind the counter spewing off the ingredients he uses. I could barely keep up with it all! He gave us an entire bag full of freshly popped corn with truffle seasoning. The base popcorn was good and fresh but the seasoning was too salty for me. However, we spent quite awhile at the taste test bar where he has samples of all of his creations. He mentioned he uses Ghirardelli chocolate for a few of his sweet options. I was sold! There are also an endless array of candies, jelly beans, etc. I also saw a soft serve ice cream machine, but not sure if it was working or if it's something DJ serves regularly. We ended up getting the Cookies & Cream popcorn for me and the Cincy Style Mix for my boyfriend. Truly, I wouldn't have let us leave there without buying something because DJ was so amazing and kind to us. He is an owner that knows how to treat his guests well! I'm a sucker for Old Fashioned Popcorn. I just love popcorn in general. When my husband and I went to the Unwind Wine Bar for a couple of drinks, we noticed this hidden gem (located off Hyde Park Square on Michigan next to Unwind Wine Bar). I felt like a little kid again. When you walk in, we were greeted by the staff. OMG, this place has everything!! Not only do they sell popcorn, but they also have chocolates, candy, shave ice, caramel apples and more!! I felt like a little kid again! The popcorn is made at this location (which you can watch them make it). They carry all kinds of flavors. I liked that you can sample them. It was hard to choose so ended up getting the Cheese Lover's Sampler which was only $4.95. It includes Patty's Yellow, White Cheddar, Chicago and Cincy Style Popcorn. My favorite it the basic Patty's Yellow. It has great buttery flavor. Also when you check in on Yelp you get 20% off your total purchase (unlock the offer and show the cashier your phone). The owner was very friendly and talked about the history of the store. You can tell he was very passionate about the business. My favorite was the how the place was decorated. It has a vintage feel (love the old hardwood floors) and my favorite was the Carousel Horse displayed in the front of the store. Even the popcorn maker was old school. Pricing very reasonable. This shop literally just won my heart over. The new owner, DJ, is extremely passionate about the products and the shop. He was a doll and an absolute pleasure. My sister and I walked in and were greeted by the extremely friendly DJ. We told him we hadn't been in the shop before and he was ready to help answer each and every question we had. We asked him about what some of the flavors were like, and he enthusiastically described how each of the flavors we asked about were made. I can't say enough about how incredible the customer service was. He told us how he was about to make a new batch off their salted truffle popcorn (very good but rich) and literally made a full scoop for us to try, bagged it up and gave it to us as a free (giant) sample! I couldn't believe that. The shop itself is darling. They had tons of old school candy, and my sister got some candy cigarettes. For the popcorn, they have samples out so you can try each and every flavor before you buy. Then, we proceeded to tell him how much our mom loves popcorn, and he gives us a popcorn ball to take home to her, free of charge! This place was too good to be true. After that, he let's us try the cookies and cream flavor (amazing!) and we were sold. We also got a bag of the regular salt and butter. Really reasonable prices. Wow wow wow! What an amazing store! You come in and you are transported back in time, in the best possible way, to an old school candy store! I was so lucky to be there right after school time, when store was filled with boys laughing and choosing their candy. It was a truly amazing moment! I loved the interior (you just gotta see it!) and the atmosphere. But most of all: I LOVE THEIR POPCORN. Freshly popped, crunchy, not greasy, just perfect! The popcorn is popped without any spice, therefore you can add whatever you want! I really hate sweet popcorn, so I was super happy that I could try a truffle salt, which was one of the seasonal varieties. I also added a little bit of butter, which smelled amazingly real! When I walked into Patty's I felt like a kid in a candy store! Er, uh wait... it is a candy store!! An old fashioned seriously legit CANDY STORE! Even though I am not a huge candy person I still love nostalgia and boy does this place have it! I would have never found this place is I wouldn't have been walking out of Unwind. I can't imagine how much business has gone up since they have moved in. This place is kind of nestled back on the back end of Michigan Ave so normally you would have missed it. It's a tiny little white building. Charmingly perfect in every way. We walked in and were greeted with a smile. Our eyes lit up when we saw the old school popcorn maker, then they lit up again when we saw the wall of jelly bellies, and we went crazy when we saw all the old timey candy. I just love that. We stopped by Patty's last night with my 11 year old daughter who happens to love popcorn. Very cool place with a great vibe all around. You could see the copper kettles behind the counter where they make to popcorn. DJ was there running the counter and was super helpful and positive. My kid ended up going with the "cookies and cream" variety and we picked up some chocolate covered peanuts and watermelon sour patch gummies before we left. I highly recommend this place. I stopped in this place on a walk after dinner and I was pleasantly surprised! This place truly had an old fashioned feel to it...not to mention the popcorn was amazing. I had both the kettle corn and the truffle popcorn..both were to die for! They also have several candies from back in the day as well as a Hawaiian shaved ice machine and a soft serve machine. A hidden gem! I heard of this place after meeting the new owner DJ at his booth at a show where I work. He gave us samples and, being an avid popcorn fan, I promised I would stop in for more. My friend raved about their truffle popcorn but said she hadn't been back since she had a bad experience with the previous owners. I'm happy to report the new owner is awesome! The truffle popcorn is EVERYTHING. Actually pretty much every flavor of popcorn they make is delicious. What I wasn't expecting was the candy selection. I mean this place is just to good to be true! I came to Patty's last week to buy party favors for my bridal shower. I wanted to get cute little popcorn bags for the girls, plus some nostalgic candy like candy necklaces or ring pops. The girl at Patty's helped me out so much, letting me try the popcorn, and explaining the flavors to me. I ended up getting Cincy style popcorn (their most popular flavor), which is white cheddar popcorn mixed with caramel popcorn...It's a great sweet and salty mix, that doesn't sound like it would work but it totally does! I couldn't stop eating it. Overall, the people here are friendly and the popcorn is awesome, but everything is a little pricey. Make sure you check in on Yelp to see if they have any check-in offers! Went into Patty's the other day to pick up a big order of popcorn. I had never been there before and was immediately giddy as I walked through the door. This place makes you feel like you walked into a time-machine and came out during a time when a piece of gum only cost you a nickel. Candy and sweets line the walls as well as popcorn tubs. The staff is SO friendly, I had a nice chat with them while they were making my large order of popcorn fresh for me. (Which by the way, it's $6.95 for a party bag of buttered popcorn... crazy!!) They also have samples of all their popcorn to taste before you buy a bag. They also have soft serve ice cream, Hawaiian shaved ice, and a whole bunch of chocolate-covered things in their little bakery window. And Jelly Belly's, lots of them. The popcorn was SO DELICIOUS and I can't wait to go back to buy more. I'm craving that Chicago mix (cheese & caramel popcorn blend) almost every day. read more

As I sit here nearly licking the bag of my caramel corn from Patty's Old Fashioned Popcorn, I felt obsessively compelled to write a review. I. Love. This. Place! I happened in this store last weekend after meeting a friend in Hyde Park Square. Always the sucker for caramel corn, I thought I'd pop in and sample what they had. Not only was the caramel corn phenomenal, but they also have several other specialty flavors that are just super. Their Italian black truffle flavor is to die for! The candy displays were cute as well, but I didn't sample any of that as I was too focused on the amazing popcorn, which, isn't laden with a bunch of kernels and doesn't get stuck in your teeth! There were two people working when I visited, a man who was too busy talking with one of his friends to answer any of my questions about the popcorn (literally, he ignored me,) and a young girl who was super helpful. Usually bad service is a complete turn-off for me, but because the popcorn is that good, I'll give them a pass this time. We'll see how the service is next time I'm in. The fact that I'm out of caramel corn at this very moment is almost enough motivation to leave work and drive over to pick up another bag. Seriously, it's probably the best I've ever had. read more

This place sells variations on the carmel corn theme, fudge, standard candy you can get in any store and... not much else. How it stays in business, I'm not sure. Do people still send giant pails of carmel corn cross-country as presents? Perhaps so. After my dental hygienist appointment across the street, I gave Patty's Old Fashioned Popcorn a try (I just loved the irony, you know?). It was fine, although my husband complained of lots of kernels waiting to crack his freshly-cleaned teeth. I was somewhat intrigued by the Hawaiian shaved ice, but when I was there, they weren't making it. I can't recommend the fudge. It was unfortunately grainy, and I could have made better at home. Located in the middle of Michigan Avenue just off the Hyde Park Square this delightful little shop is wonderful addition to the square. Part Candy store and part Popcorn factory this quaint space is ideal to pop in for a quick snack or when looking for a unique gift. The store has a number of flavors of popcorn. After tasting several, I opted for Chicago Style with a Twist. This stuff is ADDICTIVE! I found the gentlemen working in the shop to be very helpful and willing to guide me in my selection. In addition to bagged popcorn in several sizes they have many different tins for custom mixes. I was also intrigued by their Ginormous Party Size bag priced for mere $5.95. During my visit, I also had to try several of the pieces of chocolate out of the wide selection of candy and chocolates by the pound. I opted for some tiger bark (Mix of Chocolate and Peanut Butter). They were a scrumptious afternoon treat. The cotton candy machine was being repaired during my visit or I would have likely tried. This is definitely a store designed to bring out the child in everyone. So, next you are in Hyde Park Square, turn the corner onto Michigan and stop in for a tasty popcorn treat! read more

I went for a walk tonight and decided to turn down Michigan Avenue on my way back home from Ault Park, just to see if this cute little popcorn shop was open in the 8pm hour. Honestly, I just wasn't certain what their hours were, having never been there before. As I turned the corner, I was delighted to see a light cast on the sidewalk and their OPEN sign still out. Next to that sign was a much larger sign that made me almost let out a squeal of glee: Hand-Shaved Hawaiian Ice. Why, that is the #1 thing that I have found woefully absent from Hyde Park Square. The shop looks adorable from the outside, and is even more amazing inside. When I walked in, there was a mother and her young daughter browsing the shop. I am not sure who was more excited about this place, me or some roughly 8-year old girl. She, of course, was as delighted as a kid in a candy shop, while I was overcome with nostalgia. There are vintage movie posters on the walls, and pieces of carnival rides: like a horse from a merry-go-round, for example. The shop is quite a lot like one you would find at an amusement park, too. There is cotton candy, fudge, a variety of other candies, the aforementioned Hand-Shaved Ice (squee! - and note they let you pick up to 3 flavors. I chose Blueberry, because yay, blue tongue!), and popcorn. The decor is a perfect accent for the full candy shop effect. It almost feels like stepping into the shop, you've been transported to another place, and that when you step out, you'll be at a carnival... in Narnia. It's that magical kind of a place. Or maybe I am just on a sugar high from the shaved ice. The popcorn selection is glorious indeed. I had never even heard of or fathomed that such a thing as cookies and creme popcorn existed. Well, it does exist, this shop has it, and it is delicious. Having recently been to Chicago and tasted Chicago-style popcorn purchased on their Michigan Avenue, I couldn't resist buying a bag of Patty's Chicago-style. After all, it's located on a Michigan Avenue, too. As I walked home with my blueberry Hand-Shaved Ice, and my Chicago-style popcorn, I think I broke a speed-walking barrier. (Btw, a medium sized shaved ice and a bag of popcorn was under $10, which is much cheaper than one would pay for a similarly sized bag of gourmet popcorn in Chicago). When I arrived home, my tongue blue from the ice, I tore into the popcorn, gently at first, but before I knew it, half the bag was gone. This establishment should be tried by all in the Cincinnati area! The people working at Patty's popcorn are so friendly and helpful. The decor inside truly makes it feel like an old-time candy store. It's at a great location very close to Hyde Patk Square which makes it easy to walk to from many of the restaurants. My favorite thing on the menu is the truffle popcorn. The lady friend had been raving about this place since the moment she was conceived so I figured I'd try it out so she's stop blabbering about it. Bad move. Now I can't stop blabbering about it. We tried their mango and passion fruit snow cone and it was great! Thing only set me back 3 bucks and was HUGE!! It's not your grade school snow cone either, this ish is legit shaved ice. They also have popcorn on sale, go figure. They have a bunch of samples out to try so of course I had 6-7 of them while he was making my snow cone. Awesome shaved ice!!! It's fluffy & flavorful & delicious & does not compare to fair shaved ice! Many options on flavors. Unfortunately, they recently had their ice making machine taken out for part of the winter season but explained that it should be back upstairs soon. The popcorn is delicious as well. Love, love LOVE this place! The owners are SO friendly and welcoming. My kids go to school a block away and there are always flocks of kids visiting on the warm days after school. The owners seem genuinely happy to see the kids (unlike some OTHER places on Hyde Park Square) after school. My kids love the Hawaiian Shaved Ice and the cookies and cream popcorn. I'm more of a cheese popcorn girl, but will gladly eat most flavors. I love how they have tasting popcorn set out so you don't have to ask for a taste every time you want to try a flavor. The big bags of plain popcorn are reasonably priced, delicious and great for a sleepover/movie night etc. We will continue to visit this little Hyde Park gem! read more
