Let me start by saying this loud and clear: I am not a great dancer. I'm decent--with two left…read morefeet--and I work hard outside of class because, well, I need to. I've even booked private sessions with instructors just to nail down routines. So if that sounds familiar, keep reading--because by the end of this, you might just be signing up for your first class. I've been a proud member of the Groove Zone community for nearly two years now, and honestly, I can't say enough great things about the instructors and the entire program. Yolanda Thomas, the owner and lead instructor, is a force of nature--an incredibly kind, passionate, and inspiring human who truly cares about every single person who steps through the studio doors. Her motto? "If you think you can't dance, I bet ya I can teach ya how to." (Spoiler alert: She can.) Thanks to Groove Zone, I've performed at two South Bay Lakers halftime shows and even hit the floor at a WNBA halftime performance at Crypto Arena--in front of 15,000 people. Yeah... 15,000. Never in my life did I think I'd perform in front of a live audience, let alone an arena crowd. It's the kind of rush you can't describe--and an experience most people never get the chance to have. And the community? Pure gold. The dancers I've met have become friends, cheerleaders, and my biggest supporters. There's zero judgment in the studio--because we're all there for the same reasons: to learn something new, break a sweat, and most importantly--have fun. Big shoutout to another powerhouse instructor: Manuela. She might seem intimidating at first (because let's be real--she's an absolute beast on the dance floor), but she is hilarious, supportive, and knows her stuff inside and out. She pushes you to grow, step outside your comfort zone, and leave class drenched in sweat--but in the best way possible. When it's time to hit the stage, she'll make sure you're 100% performance ready. And if you're not? She'll tell you that too--but with honesty, compassion, and the goal of making sure next time, you'll own that stage. That's how Groove Zone rolls: real talk, real support, real results. Take it from me--don't do what I did. I walked into my first class... got overwhelmed... and walked right back out. It took me a year to return. Don't let your nerves hold you back like that. Instead, challenge yourself. Step outside your comfort zone. Join a community of people who love to dance just as much as you want to. You don't have to be Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears. (I'm definitely not!) You just have to show up, bring your energy, make some new friends, and get one hell of a workout while you're at it. And when the day comes that you see yourself on a Jumbotron at a packed stadium, absolutely killing it in a halftime performance--don't say I didn't warn you about how badass you'd feel.

We had to switch classes for scheduling reasons and are currently with Miss Emily. She's very engaging with both the students and the parents. She makes sure to keep us all informed about what our little ones are learning, even giving feedback and updates on progress. The customer service has been very top notch too. Most inquiries or requests for rescheduling has been handled quite promptly and without issue. The most recent one being helping a fellow mom take advantage of the "bring a friend to class" promotion the studio was running last month. The studio admin, Sydney, was great and handled everything! We've participated in one recital so far. Sign ups for recitals are optional, so I did not know what to expect, but I certainly didn't think that my daughter was the only one from her class that signed up. My other guess is that not many other girls from that age group signed up either, as she had to perform with just one other student who she didn't know. It was not a long performance, which was to be expected. We're unsure as to why the littlest ones went first, as they set the tone for the rest of their peers, giving the impression that going up on stage has to be a daunting and traumatizing experience. It was my daughter's first time on stage, so I can't say it went fantastically, but I also can't put too much blame on anyone else for that. If anything, it just means she needs to have more classes so she can get better! I can't seem to find out if there are any offers to provide discounts for sibling sign ups, so I hope you guys consider doing something like that in the future!

My background is in education and I have worked at elementary, middle, and high school levels as well as a kid's soccer coach so I have some context for how easy/tough it is to teach classes. Our ballet teacher was Ms. Natalie and my wife and I both thought she had a very caring demeanor for working with children. That is something you don't teach. Even though a 1.5 year old can't listen to direction the way a 3, 4, or 5 year old can Ms. Natalie adapted well and tried different things to get our daughter's attention. Click on "faculty and staff." You'll see nobody listed because practically all their staff have quit. It's a toxic environment where the directors and teachers treat dancers with disdain. They make comments on what the young girls are eating (that's a major red flag at a dance studio). It's a very sad decline. They used to put on a production of the Nutcracker at the Alex Theater in Glendale. It was glorious. That was before Covid. Now they put on a small family only production in a little theater in Northridge. They used to have many dancers winning competitions. Now they barely have anyone even qualified to enter competitions. It's a very sad state of affairs with many dancers going to much better, growing dance studios in the area. I'd be surprised if LABA is still operating later this year. So sad to see it fall from grace. I guess all good things come to an end.

Dancers compete in competitions, attend dance conventions, and have opportunities to perform at various venues. Both of my girls have learned and grown so much over the past few years at CCPA. Two months into their program--after a cast list had already been posted--they attempted to collect additional payments from already-enrolled families, despite there being no prior contract or communication outlining these supposed fees. They also demanded that students come up with their own costumes, and even threatened to pull kids from the production if payments weren't made. Anyone with even basic theater experience knows that threatening to remove children from a show two months into rehearsals is outrageous and unacceptable. Everything--fees, responsibilities, schedules--should be communicated clearly in writing upfront, not sprung on families halfway through. They added extra rehearsals last minute and tried to charge for those too. After enough parents complained, they finally took over the costume responsibilities. But again, none of these requirements were mentioned at sign-up. While we're incredibly grateful for the teacher (who was absolutely wonderful), the owner and office staff were completely disorganized, unprofessional, and frankly, rude.Mothers were berated for wanting to sit in on their young children (ages 6+ and up), being mic'd under their clothing and were screamed at for wanting to monitor that because it was "closed rehearsals" It gets worse. After deciding we'd never return due to the awful experience, we noticed a charge for another session we never signed up for. When we kindly reached out to have it removed, we were told that "Musical Theater" was now considered a year-round commitment, even though: * That was never communicated. * Our child hadn't attended in months. Did they call to check on our child's absence? Nope. They just charged us. In this economy. Don't be fooled by their polished social media. Behind the scenes, it's just smoke and mirrors. On one performance day, they called the cast for a 3:30 arrival time--and no adult staff showed up until 5:15.Fourteen children were left under the supervision of just two volunteer moms, and the office admitted they "forgot to call" the rest of us to let us know that no one would be in attendance, nor that they needed help. Just kids expected to be left alone. Left to run their own warmups and choreography. So not only are they charging families absurd fees without consent, but they are also putting children's safety at risk while being paid to not even show up. It reeks of: "I want to run a children's theater company but have zero idea how one is supposed to be run--and I'm counting on you not knowing either." Spoiler alert: I was raised in one of the top youth theaters in the country. This ain't it. Just chaos.Chaos, dishonesty, and a complete disregard for families. PATRONS BEWARE.
