Follow the signs to Ducks In A Row and you'll soon see why this is the McLaren Vale cellar door…read moreworth the go! Not only do you feel like you are walking into someone's home and backyard, you actually are. Roger, the resident Golden Retriever and apparent assistant wine-maker will come up and give you a warm, sloppy welcome on arrival. And of course a cellar door experience wouldn't be worth it without the wine tasting part! Stand underneath a vine covered verandah quaffing and having a chin wag with Amanda and Glen (the winemaker himself) about their unusual varieties of wines for Australia. Italian grapes like Mataro, Fiano and Vermentino are used to create wines that will impress your friends at BBQ's and dinners in the future. Like the Roses commercial, if you're asked not to bring a thing, a Ducks In A Row wine will help you say "we spent some money on this," and "we are a quirky and hip couple" who now knows what a Fiano grape tastes like - of course darling! Amanda and Glen open their cellar door when they are not busy (which is quite often) so it is worth a phone call before making the 40 minute drive. Also keep a look out for their pop-up events they run too, including a Vintage Celebration during vintage which had a vintage clothes pop up at it or their afternoon of Elbow Room popup stall and wine tastings. It makes for a perfect day trip!

I AM IN LOVE WITH EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE!!!…read more At first our little group were worried that we were lost, or about to enter the scene of our own personal version of Wolf Creek as we entered a dry paddock, but the lovely Amanda came out to greet us and show us the way and we soon stepped in to an oasis - her own back yard! We were also greeted by Roger, the friendly Golden Retriever whom we all wanted to take home with us! Ducks in a row is open by appointment only and our group of 24 were very lucky to be told all about some wonderful wines by Amanda and Glen while we nibbled on our own picnic lunch - which we brought, but the team helped by providing some utensils we forgot - so thanks guys!!! The wines pleased everyone in our group - and there were some real wine snobs amongst us! Many a bottle was purchased over the course of the visit and I'll be recommending Ducks in Row - the wine and the winery to all my friends!

Well this was a treat. Freshly taken over by a couple who moved over from Sydney early in 2015 this…read moreplace is well off the beaten path, although, the path is rather beaten, so maybe it's *on* the beaten path (sigh!). The wines are good. Nothing here is (currently) spectacular and worth the trip in its own right but there's a nice young Sav Blanc that's fresh and very drinkable. The Rose and bubbles both surprise and the reds are pretty tidy too: a pinot with a little something to it and a Cab and Shiraz that you wouldn't kick out of bed for farting. They are all approachable and the heavier reds could probably lay down for a few years before coming out to play. The prices are good too $16 - $20 for all wines is a palatable deal. If you buy a case you get two bottles free....so that's just what I did. Now, the other thing to mention are the two cottages to stay at on the property which are great. Very quiet, clean and spacious, ample kitchen space with everything you could need to make a meal or just to prepare a snack. An outdoor patio and big bbq to enjoy. There are two bedrooms and a lovely big bathroom with soaker tub (love the jets!). So, come down, buy some wines and stay the night, it's a lovely getaway.

From the owner: We are a family run boutique winery with a smal range of premium wines and beautiful views. We…read moreoffer wine tasting, wine sales and a great antipasto platter for lunch. We also have two two bedroom cottages for those who want to stay and enjoy the tranquility.

I'm writing this review purely for selfish reasons. I want to encourage Tom to run more wine hikes…read morein Adelaide! Initially I thought wine and hiking in Adelaide go together about as well as running the City to Bay with beer stops along the way instead of Gatorade. But I am a convert. Not only that I am now a raving fan. Tom from Head in the Clouds wines has taken this concept from his passion for hiking and wine and smooshed it together like a good grape crush. You start at "base camp" over the first wine tasting for the morning and proceed to not only hike a summit but stop and drink different SA wines and varietals from some of Tom's favourites along the way. Everyone is encouraged to bring some snacks for sharing along the way and the whole 3 hours turns into one big progressive wine tasting. This is such a refreshingly unique concept which showcases wine, SA's landscapes and naturally creates a bond between you and those walking with you. Our tour did go overtime by an hour or so, so it was a long day and you will want to allow time to take it all in. You will also want to have a fairly good level of fitness to enjoy something like this as the hikes (although short) were steep, but it did leave us with a spectacular view over Adelaide that you wouldn't otherwise get. This was the first of (hopefully) many tours, all I have to do now is try and convince Tom to host more over Summer and Autumn. Feel free to join in my petitioning!

My second wine hike with Tom leading and Ashley supporting yesterday featured Adelaide Hills wines…read moreas we hiked through Waite Institute and the hills beyond. Another outstanding day delightfully enjoyed by all - generally superb wines to taste (there was one only which was best described as "interesting"), scrumptious picnic foods and snacks, fabulous scenery and a lovely group of interested and like minded devotees of life's simple pleasures. Head in the Cloud Wine Hikes are so special - Tom is an energetic, enthusiastic and slightly hyper winemaker/curator who loves wine and hiking. Do yourself a favour and get on board for the next one or two - even better drag some out-of-towners along and dare to reveal another of Adelaide's truly wonderful hidden gems.

You can book Sunday Lunches to taste their wine, all complimentary!…read more So someone says free lunch, you think there's a catch.. I was expecting sandwiches, cold meat and cheese platter to be served with the wine. Much to my surprise there was a selection of warm dishes and salads. A variety which catered for Vegetarians and Gluten Free diets! On this Sunday (They may switch the dishes around) we had a Beef Curry, A Seafood Marina mix, Pork Meat Balls, Lasange (Both Beef & Vegetarian varieties) Salad wise there was a chicken, tuna, beef, beetroot & fetta and of course a standard green salad for vegetarians. And if that spread wasn't enough, there's dukkah? (not sure on the spelling) with olive oil, fresh white and wholemeal bread.. and a Cheese platter to boot with crackers and dried fruit. Amazing! All fresh and made from quality ingredients. The wine was set up on a tressel ? (Not sure on the spelling again!) tables which you could help yourself to throughout the day. My personal favourite was their 2009 Rose. I bought 2 bottles home and my Mum bought a case! Let me tell you that when I'm over her house for a meal I'll be making sure she cracks one over dinner ;) And later on in the day tea and coffee is bought out accompanied by Tim Tams! Nom noms! There is absolute no pressure to buy any wine, you can go along to enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon with family, friends or both, but honestly I'd be surprised if you didn't find a wine out of their selection you wouldn't enjoy and want to take home. The Sunday Lunches are booked out until March 2013, but these lunches are worth the wait! ;)
