After a slightly delayed evening flight into Amsterdam, and after having dropped our bags off at the AirBnB, my girlfriend and I were in Amsterdam-Zuid with the quandry of where to get some food in a city where the restaurants close the kitchens rather early (apparently).
Thankfully, the Yelp mobile app came in *very* helpful. We didn't care about getting a table or having a sit-down meal - we just wanted food, as quickly as possible.
A brief walk towards the centre of Amsterdam lead us to Patates - though, ironically, we were at the time making a beeline for the adjacent McDonalds. This place is basically a little outlet which offers a couple of burgers, as well as fries with a vast array of sauces and toppings.
Now, I'm going to put my hands up straight away and admit that I have a mild fritessaus addiction. If you don't know what I'm on about, it looks kinda like mayonnaise but it doesn't taste like mayonnaise. (It's actually nice, basically - unlike mayo in the UK, which is just wrong.)
Both the girlfriend and I went for a large fries, with the oorlog topping - fritessaus, satay and finely diced onion. (Again, full disclosure - I have a mild oorlog fries addiction too.) At around €3.50 each, you got one hefty portion of fries and they certainly don't go light with the sauce either - the sauce lasted right to the bottom of the cone.
If you're after a quick snack, you can definitely do a lot worse than this place. :) read more
