Hired him for a full home renovation and wish I didn't. Overcharged over the amount of the contract because he said he did extra work, meanwhile never gave me any change orders to sign, or anything. Work was completely subpar. Was hardly ever around to supervise the work as he was often on vacation out of town, or in other jobs. When I stopped by the home unannounced he was never there. His lack of supervision made him over budget and then he tried to blame it on me. For example, he quoted a certain amount for the floor and he became over budget because his workers did not level the extension, therefore the entire floor had to be replaced, not just the portion of the extension, which is what he budgeted. So that meant we needed more SQ footage of floor and I had to look for a cheaper floor to fit the budget, therefore downgrade the overall quality of my floor due to his oversight that he refused to take accountability for. Furthermore, he only allocated 2k to paint the entire house which was really under budget, but that is what I got worth of paint. Mind you, he kept contract $ overage that he received as a deposit to get the work started.
Also, less than six months after the work was completed I had to replace the roof on the extension he did on my house because it was leaking and caused water damage inside the home. Given my experience with his poor quality job, I hired someone else to replace the roof. When I told him about it he refused to take any responsibility and should have came to him first. Maybe he is right, but could I have trusted him to fix something after having experienced the quality of his job? He does not like to take any input on details and likes to do what is best (and cheaper) for him and for you just to be ok with whatever he says. There are other countless things wrong with the home (plumbing, electricity) that are too many to mention here. Bottom line is, don't be fooled by his (initial) pleasant demeanor. This contractor does not know how to budget or be accountable (2k for painting an entire house? - I know now this amount was unreal, but that is why the DC requires us to hire license contractors - under the assumption that they know how much things costs and what they are doing!), He will find a way to blame things on you, eventhough he is the expert (or supposed to be, as a licensed contractor). He even threatened to put a lien on my home when I tried to withhold final payment and turned very nasty. If you like quality, accountability, and the ability to provide solid input on what your house will look like, look elsewhere. read more
