I might not be a pasty fan but I thought I would be since I love pastry/bread and I love potatoes and meat. I ordered three different pasties and thought they were kind of underwhelming. Needed more flavor. But the outside was delicious and flaky.

The Friday special, Chile Verde Pasty

An East Sacramento staple! They have been opened since 1952 so they must be doing something right! Located deep into J street, in the heart of East Sac, Pasty Shack is a hole in the wall that can be easily missed unless you know what you're looking for. The pasty's come sweet or savory. I prefer the savory. My personal favorite is the Friday special, the chile verde pasty. This pasty comes stuffed with chunks of pork covered in chile verde sauce and refried beans. The flavors this pasty achieve crossover the best of English and Mexican cuisine. I was almost upset I had to share with my girlfriend. You can never go wrong with the Cornish pasty. It's stuffed with diced beef chunks, potatoes and onions. The seasonings hit every mark. We always are sure to order a large side of gravy. It's a little extra but worth it. Not that the pasty's are dry but who doesn't love gravy? We even had some leftover and made mashed potatoes the following day and used some lol. I've only ever had their food prepared never frozen but I wouldn't mind buying them frozen and preparing for a holiday treat, especially their apple turnovers. The pasty's run about $12 each but each one can feed two people.

not bad. i was actually surprised on the size of this pasty. I opted for the chicken because it is not as dry as the original cornish or Bavarian versions. my pasty came with chunks of chicken, veggies, in a chicken broth sauce. the crust was actually good - not too doughy. i would say satisfying.

Cornish Pasty

I've been coming here for over 20 years. I think the pastys are better now than they were back then. Pastry crust, good. Meat and potatoes and onions, good. Nothing not to like. Staff is always cool as well.

Chicken pasty

Place is easy enough to find but you could miss it. There is a 3 seat patio table out front and there may have been a couple of seats inside. However, on an upper 80s day, it was blasted hot inside. They ran out of veggie pasty for my friend at 5:45 on a Friday. They close at 6:00. I ordered chicken pasty since it has a variety of veggies and mushrooms. Dough was good. There were a few pieces of chicken and I barely noticed the shrooms. While German, it's reminiscent of a chicken pot pie. Easy to eat with just a plastic fork. I finished it and was full. I'm eating more reasonable portions so if you like to stuff yourself, it may not fill you. I didn't like the aftertaste/burps. Was very stew tasting. I might return at some point to try the cornish. Though I'm in no rush. If looking to eat your pasty nearby, check out East Portal Park. Plenty of picnic benches and we landed one in the shade.

A photogenic Cornish pasty

Seems like Bri'ish food places are hard to come by so I was curious enough to check this place out. What's a pasty, you ask? It's pretty much a pastry consisting of filling stuffed inside a shell made out of ingredients similar to those in pie crust. If you've read Harry Potter, this word should sound familiar (pumpkin pasties, anyone??). Pasties are typically handheld-sized (think of empanadas), but the ones here.....they're huge lol! They're almost the size of a football. Quite shareable for two unless you're super hungry. I got the Cornish pasty, which its filling includes lean beef and potatoes. Love the pie crust; very buttery and I'm a fan of pie crust having a slight chewy give to it. The beef was too lean for my liking as it was a bit dry and chewy. Gravy costs extra and I recommend getting it with this pasty to help with the beef. Also wasn't too fond of the potatoes still having skin (nit-picking but made the pasty a little less appetizing to eat). Definitely comfort food. There are other variations here, some exclusive to certain days. As I do really like the pastry shell here, I'm intrigued to try another type!

A staple in East Sac! This is yummy treat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The original Cornish Pasty is the best. Diced beef, diced potatoes, onions., special seasonings, baked inside a pastry crust. I recommend a side of the gravy.

Worse pasty I've ever had. Steak was used but it was too chewy. Basically uneatable. Glad I didn't buy more for another day.

Some of our favorite things to order are their Full English Breakfast, Fish and Chips, Cottage Pie, and Poutine. The Scotch Eggs are also tasty, and something I hadn't tried before visiting. We prefer to visit during off-peak hours/days but if you're ok with the crowds in Old Sac they're a great date night spot and a great spot to grab a pint with friends.

I ordered the following: - Poutine - Side House Salad - Prawn Linguini w/ extra prawns & extra pasta sauce The poutine was decent. The fries were crispy and could've used a bit more smothering with the gravy. I paired the dish with the condiment at the table called HP sauce. The house salad was straightforward and light. It tasted great with black pepper and ranch. Lastly, the Prawn Linguini dish was enjoyable for the most part. The white wine butter sauce was liquidy/thin and needed to be thickened more. I also saw that the dish was supposed to have grape tomatoes (as mentioned on the menu), and it wasn't included. Otherwise, the prawns, mushrooms, red onions, spinach, etc. as well as the overall flavor were excellent. The server throughout my dining experience was Lambert. He was very pleasant, kind, and attentive. I was impressed with his hospitality. The indoor ambiance was inviting and had a nice charm. It felt like I was transported to Great Britain. All in all, the food was tasty but the execution fell a tad short of expectations, especially with the Poutine and Prawn Linguini. I appreciated the opportunity to come to Bear & Crown. The service and atmosphere may bring me back to try something different.

We try someone differnt every time we come. This time we tried the Cottage Pie, also know as a Sheppard's Pie. It was really good. A little more soupy than the one I made at home, but it's good and perfect for the cold weather. We also had a half order of the fish and chips. Most recently, I tried the Pimms Rangoon (Gin, Ro Pimm's, fresh lemon, ginger, pineapple, fizzy water) and a wine that I can't recall. The cheeze whiz (house made whipped manchego and parm on crostini) is a must-have. The bread is wonderful as well as the cheese and olive. I'm usually not crazy about green olives, but it worked so well with the cheese. I've had tinned sardines in the past, and they were fine... along the lines of a tin of Fishwife. Next time, I'll probably try another bread & cheese dish. I like the kitschy vibe. And, our servers were nice both times I've gone.
