This butcher shop provides top quality products and adheres to the provisions of biodynamic agriculture. It's meat is produced with extreme care which reflects a sensitivity not found with industrial agriculture. It is truly a wonderful alternative to traditional meat processing products and is definitely a preferred choice of discriminating clientele. Went to the store to buy some meat for my dinner and thought it was very cool what they are doing with the QR code thing. Scanned it with my phone and was able to see information specific to my meat and why it is organic. What a great idea, I hope more companies will start having this kind of transparency. read more

Pasture To Plate - My meat with their origin QR code technology - Butcher Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

Excited to do my first order and try many different items. The Lamb shank has an extremely rubbery texture and not much flavour. Maybe a one-off? Then I cooked Beef short ribs and had the same rubbery, non edible issue. I emailed my complaint as it was quite puzzling and the response was that I must have either cooked it too long or on too high a temperature. I have 50 years experience cooking meats, so blaming the customer is not a great strategy here. I left 2 stars as there are a couple other items I have yet to try, but I expected a much better quality at this premium price. Plenty of other butchers. read more

If you want a guilt-free conscience, but aren't willing to sacrifice your meat-hungry taste buds by going vegetarian, when you buy from Pasture to Plate, you can at least rest knowing that the meat you're eating came from animals that led a good life. Besides, happy animals taste better, right? So, how do we know they're happy? Cause it says so on their website! (http://www.pasture-to-plate.com/happy-animals). No, but seriously though. It's because of the way they've been treated. Take the chickens, for instance. As chicks, they're fed certified organic feed, and aren't subject to the vaccines or drugs that plague the young lives of conventionally raised chickens. As they grow older, they get moved to green pastures contained within poultry fences, which rotate every week so they always have access to fresh, green grass. And of course, they always have access to fresh, running water. Not only are they treated well, they (the meat - the chicken - the pork - the beef - the lamb) all come from one farm: the Rafter 25 Ranch in Redstone, British Columbia. Not an easy feat if you ask me. But maybe this is the way farming is supposed to be (instead of the agro-conglomerates that exist today). So, given all these accolades, why only 4 stars? It's because I'm not a big fan of their part-diner, part-butcher configuration. (Here'a partial photo as I forgot to include the tables and chairs on the left: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/6IMgEnSZyb-8N7yPDDdKIw?select=VlcPPioaZarbbdWUSKXwWg) Pasture to Plate seems determined to complete that circle of bringing the meat from the pasture to your plate - literally. Patrons can buy fresh, raw meat displayed inside the case, and then sit down to a sandwich or a nice bowl of stew while waiting for their meat to be packaged up. I don't know if they'll cook up whatever you point to, like in a fish frying shop, but intuition tells me no. You can check them out yourself if you're intrigued. Either way, I'll probably return for some meat action and will do my best to ignore the diner section. read more

Yeah, so I feel that anyone talking about the ethics, or the relatively high prices, or the single farm scarcity is missing the point of a local butcher shop. It's, to my knowledge, the only good butcher shop on the drive, they carry all the regular stuff, can order you literally everything, and best of all, have great staff. That's the point of these places. You can actually form relationships with vendors in your community and that's fun! You can customize your cuts in-store. Want your pork shoulder trimmed and chopped right there? No problem, wait a few minutes, chat with the staff, and sample the 4 or 5 plates of in-house sausages and pates. The pork is genuinely some of the best I have had too. I cook a lot and I often have unusual requests. For instance, I like to make bacon and beans with a pig foot at the bottom for more flavour, well Plate to Pasture can get me one in a week. They can get me a pigs head in a week. They got me two ham legs in a week. Stop by, it's great. read more

I've finally found a place that I can ethically buy meat from! After years of looking I appreciate the the thoroughness and pride that the business obviously has. Very clean (especially for a butcher). Super friendly staff that explained their business model. Great selection, fresh, and while prices are higher than you would find at a normal grocer the difference is absolutely justified by "certified organic" process that is utilized. read more

This place has put a lot of effort into providing the public with the best grass raised meat you can get. The expanse of value added products are a real testament to their commitment to quality that no other retail service provides in this field, I highly recommend shopping there! read more

I went there for the first time and was excited that I'd found a place with well-raised meat. What they do, and how they do it, is really impressive. That's what the 3 stars are for. Spent over $100. It's expensive there. Had to return some cream cheese with mold on top. Was still positive towards this place tho. The guy didn't want to give me cash back, so I was stuck with one of those gift cards. Went back to get something with it a few weeks later.. Person told me the card had zero on it, then I had to wait till she checked the computer after which she finally came back and allowed me to use the credit. I wouldn't have minded any of that if there hadn't been such an air of indifference from her, bordering on snarky. I dont know if it's the kind of thing where they have enough business, so they don't feel the need to bother with being pleasant? Maybe it's that the people working there are knowledgeable but not great at customer service. I don't know. But I'm not going back. read more

Pasture to Plate helped us to be mindful of our protein meat intake, We just dialed in our food consumption at home and we decided to have meat twice a week, the rest is plant based diet. I love soups and this is my place to get my certified beef broth bones and some beef stews. If you spend 200 you get 15% off. This will be our go to meat shops. The staff know their cuts for sure. We love the staff - knowledgeable, laid back and super friendly. read more

GROUND BREAKING SHIPPING FOR BIODYNAMIC ORGANIC GRASS FED & GRASS FINISHED MEAT Pasture 2 Plate delivered us over 20 kg of meet from their shop on Commercial Drive, Vancouver to Parksville, Vancouver Island (125+KM). We missed the UPS delivery and it shipped the next day. All the meat was completely frozen solid. The packaging was even frozen on the bottom and sides of the packaging. The most amazing organic bio dynamic meat available. I am so grateful that I can now get it delivered anywhere in North America. read more

Hands down highest quality, best-tasting meat and charcuterie you can find in Vancouver. We moved here a year ago from California where the bar is set pretty high when it comes to pasture-raised meat. We nearly cried when we left our local farmers market and all the ranchers and amazing stands we used to frequent on a weekly basis. Finding Pasture To Plate was a godsend! We cook A LOT and care about where our food comes from. When I saw that P2P makes their own biodynamic fertilizer (biodynamic exceeds organic) to grow the grass that their animals feed on, I was over the moon. You can taste the quality and nutrition in the meat. We are into nose to tail eating, and P2P makes that easy for us. The staff is very helpful, knowledgable, and friendly. They always offer delicious samples of their charcuterie, cheeses, and other fun stuff like fire cider and fruit gelatin squares. Their wool blankets, socks, assortment of fancy mustard and olive oil make for great gifts, and we always bring company visiting from out of town to their restaurant on Denman Street. If you care about where your meat comes from, don't be fooled by places that simply claim "all-natural" or "non-medicated". These places typically rely on grain to fatten their cattle, using the same farming practices as large industrial farmers. It changes the fatty-acid profile of the meat and you end up with a much less healthy animal. Good meat costs more, but you either pay the rancher now or the doctor later! read more

I have been repeatedly disappointed at Pasture to Plate. I endeavour to shop local sourced, healthy food animals (i.e. grass fed beef). I love shopping on the Drive, living nearby, and tried Pasture to Plate over a several month period. Their sausages were okay, but all the various cuts of beef were repeatedly disappointing (fatty, gristly, tough) - even those that "looked good". I did have a few cuts that were good, which is why I kept trying them. But it's not worth playing Russian Beef Roulette. Their stock is limited, which I understand being small and serving fresh. I'd be okay with that, but the quality of the cow... not worth going back, I'm afraid. The staff are nice, and the shop clean. They do try, and they have a great idea, but fall short with their offerings. So far nothing beats Windsor Quality Meats on Main St. for tasty, happy, healthy, red meat. read more

Here's a novel concept: know where your meat comes from. Not just what part of the world, but the actual farm it was produced on. The sharing of this information seems to be normal in other areas of the world such as the UK and parts of Europe, where food labelling is generally more strict than in Canada. Pick up a package of pork tenderloin at Marks & Spencer's and you'll see a picture of the farmer who produced it. I noticed Superstore started to do this recently with their 'Free From' line of meats. But I digress - Pasture to Plate is a new butcher shop that does exactly what their name says: it delivers free, grassfed organic meats from farms in the Chilcotin Valley to their store on the Drive. If you go to their website, you'll see photos and information on the four producers along with proof of their organic certification. I love that. When I visited them, they had a great selection of beef, lamb and pork, but not a lot of chicken or turkey. Apparently turkey is limited to the holidays. Their freezer is also stocked with items to save you another trip to the store. Yes, it's pricey (just over 1lb. of pork tenderloin was $24.83) but it was delicious and that's the price that you pay for fresh, local and organic. I would suspect the prices would be similar at Whole Foods - haven't bought meat from there in a long time to fairly compare. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and let me know that since the meat was grass-fed, it would cook more quickly. They have other cooking tips on their website. I'll be back to try some other cuts! read more

I love this place! I am a great believer in ethical meat, so Pasture to Plate is perfect for me! The meat I've had is always great quality and the staff are always helpful and cheerful. It was really useful to have to difference between their bacon and conventional bacon explained to me (it's nitrate free, so it's not bright red!), and rest assured it tastes almost exactly the same. I've had chicken, beef, and bacon from here and I've always had great experiences and really enjoyed the meat. Yes, it's definitely pricey, but that's to be expected for local, ethical, seasonal, organic product! Not somewhere I could afford every day, but luckily I don't eat meat too often! The super convenient location is the final big bonus for me - there's nothing like being able to do all your shopping within a couple of blocks and knowing you're getting good stuff! read more

In an effort to improve the quality of meat I'm consuming I decided to investigate the world of organic meats. I consume a whole lot of red meat and I figured this is a good place to start. Healthy, happy animals should lead to a healthy and happier me. My first foray into organic meats brought me to Pasture to Plate. They've got a great location on the drive and staff were always friendly. They were quick to answer any question I had although I am always there on slower hours. I haven't tried their more expensive cuts but their stew meats are great albeit on the pricier side. They've always came out incredibly tender. But that does lead me to my biggest qualm.. price. When you're forking out as much on beef bones as you are on the meat itself, you know there's a problem. Looking at the other cuts, I just couldn't bring myself to fork out that much when you can get more elsewhere. The cost to benefit ratio just doesn't work out. All that being said, I am a fan and if I could afford it, I'd definitely shop here more often. read more

It's been years since I posted my last review. Their service has not improved much. They still use only one supplier, so stuff is always out of stock. There are other organic butchers in Vancouver that don't have this problem. I don't like P2P because of their food scarcity. I feel like I am competing with other people to get what I need when it's really not necessary. There are enough marrow bones out there for everyone! I shouldn't have to reserve product before it even arrives. It's meat, not caviar. As for the products themselves... well, I enjoy marrow bones and soup bones, but they're never in stock anymore. When they are, you pay a fortune. I stopped in just yesterday to see if there was a change in product or service -- nope. I got fed up with being told "we'll have some in two weeks" every time I went in. It's unfortunate because they're just up the street from me, but I'll instead travel elsewhere to get what I need. Their loyalty to their one single farm operation is untenable for a butcher shop in a high density city. I kept trying in vain. I won't be going back. read more

really have to know what to buy here. Awesome: brisket sandwich, split pea soup, mutton tenderloin (when they rarely have it), pork chops Awful: all the beef i ever bought here - tough, expensive... we tried many times, tried better cuts, regretted buying every piece of beef. in addition, lamb rack was also tough... would have tried the lamb tenderloin (the mutton tenderloin was fantastic) but it was too expensive to risk being disappointed again. so, try the pork! or the sandwiches. avoid the beef. read more

I will NOT be shopping here again! On February 11, 2013 I was out of my home area and on the drive and decided to get my organic meat from this shop versus my usual place. I purchased 4 of their beef sausages and 12 slices of the uncured bacon. The bacon came to $7.68 which is not bad but when i opened up the package at home it was mostly FAT and very little meat! so I spent almost $8 on bacon fat. Next, when I went to cook the sausage, I take them out of their casings (I use the meat for spaghetti sauces, etc) the meat was dry, the casing was stuck to the meat and it did not crumble very well. I had to cut it up with a knife while RAW in order to get bite sized pieces. Never had that happen to me before with sausage- organic or otherwise. Staff are friendly and helpful but might lack product knowledge if they're selling me dried out sausages and extra fatty bacon. Not impressed with the quality, taste nor the selection of the meat products @ pasture to plate and will stick with the great organic meat shops like Windsor Meats on Main street. read more

Been going to these guys for years. They're the best local butcher in Vancouver. Small family farm, organic, grass fed, just the best.

Three strikes and you're out. Twice I've purchased their ground beef. It's coarse, chewy in an unpleasant way, and leaves fibrous strands between my teeth. Yuck. Purchased suet for Christmas pudding in December 2019. Not the product I pre-ordered and completely unusable. I feel like I'm being ripped off there. Plus, too pricey. Not again. read more

Unfortunately, there is some lack of shop management in Persia market at Lonsdale street North Vancouver. There is much rude staff who are working there. They don't respect people customers and as well as their colleagues. There are many discrepancies from cashiers while checking out customer's shopping. The most problem comes from the week manager there. Also, there is a lot of expired food with a high price which they are selling to people. That particular branch has a very bad and unprofessional team and they don't respect any customers with the right manners. read more

I have been a customer with P2P on Commercial for about 3 years always standing behind their product and service. Today my experience did everything, but encourage me to return. I called yesterday to ask if I could get a whole chicken ground. I was told to place my order on-line and put a note in the comment field. My order was approved yesterday and so I made arrangements to travel to pick it up today. When I got there, the owner told me that they no longer do ground chicken as it is "too labour intensive". She admitted she had not seen my comments when she filled my order and apologized with little understanding for the inconvenience it caused me despite my complaint. There was no one time offer to grind a chicken while I waited or to give me a small discount on my order or another product. No genuine consideration was made to reconcile the error. Nothing! I spent over an hour of my time driving to pick up a specific item and I left the store feeling less than appreciated as a customer only to return home with no plans for dinner. If she would have done any gesture to sharpen the blow, I may have purchased another cut of meat for my evening meal. Pasture 2 Plate is more concerned about their bottom line than customer satisfaction. I support family run businesses. Especially when I feel I am a valued part of their business. I will find another family business to support. read more

**This would normally be a 5 star rating but I have to rate based on last visit** We have been going regularly for 3 years to buy our meats. We are always very happy with both quality and staff. However, we went on Sunday Jan 10th, 2016 at 4 PM to buy a small roast (its just the 2 of us) they would not cut the roast in 1/2 for us, nor offer any solution to help with perhaps another cut or??? (anything really). A little saddened by the lack of customer service, especially for a couple who have been very regular in supporting this business for 3 years now. So we left with no roast and we had already purchased everything else to go with it for that night to celebrate an occasion :( read more

Our family only buys organic foods and we fully support the way this company runs their farm at Redstone, BC and shop here about once every 2 weeks. Grass fed beef tastes better! Drug free! Free range, NO animal torture! Proper processing facilities and procedures unlike the corporate owned meat factories in Canada/USA that keep poisoning people with E-coli infections. I often eat Moose, Elk and Deer and enjoy the wonderful tastes of healthy wild game, so when I tried their burgers I was surprised at the full bodied superb flavor, with hints of clean wild game flavors. We make sure to buy a few burgers every now and then. You can buy some good quality products from here even if you're on a budget, you just need to stick to the sausages, burgers, soup bones kinda thing. The sausages are not greasy sacks of preservative stuffed factory scraps. Their sausages are great tasting and lean. Someone was complaining that they're no good because she couldn't break them up for her pasta sauce, but DUH, if you want breakable meat for a sauce just buy the ground meat, not the sausages. The Pork sausages absolutely rock for flavor! They are filling too. We tried the chili and skewers in store 1 day, YAY for the skewers!(tender and yum) SO SO for the chili(wasn't spicy enough for me). Have not tried any steaks yet. Staff are friendly and warm. Too many people on here bitchin about this place, sounding like whiny self centered cry babies or pro factory farm trolls. If you don't like ethically produced earth friendly foods and can't understand that what you want can't always be available on short notice when you expect it, then go back to superstore and buy your GMO fed factory meat, and all the drugs and pesticides that come with it. Organic bashing is for the uneducated and ignorant. read more

They know not what they do Ok, ... So, despite how you might feel about the idea of grass feed beef - i'm for it, there are a few issues with this place. Its not very professional as in they do not know how to cut/ butcher their meat, Safeway has better trained butchers let alone other local shops. ok, i can accept that, its the hippy vibe, and i would love to buy from here morally even they do a very poor technical job, i could excuse amaturish as long as its honest, But it isn't Not only do they apear incompetent but worst of all is the lies... Or call it advertising, but its still lies. Example: Three days ago they put up a sign saying " our beef is totally absolutely completely e coli free" At that time I pointed out to them that anyone with the most basic food safety training would know that that is a lie. Today that sign was still up So, i went in and asked who was in charge, and asked them about the sign, they admitted that if i randomly sampled any piece of beef they had on display every single one would be positive for e coli, (.. Its one of the most common bacteria in the mammal world, we are all covered in it as is every surface we come into contact with) so either their sign was a blatant lie or it was just ignorant, neither of which is a trait i want from someone who is selling me raw meat, and as they admit its a lie why wont they change the sign Should I deal with someone who is intentionally lying to me? Especially some one who is charging a premium on the quality of their product, the same product that they are lying about. Do they think I'm as stupid as they are? read more

I used to eat meat from Safeway and believed that organic grass fed and grass finished meat was not that much better but after eating the beef from this place i could really taste the difference. The meat just falls apart when you cook it just right. Seriously the hanger steak slow cooked for 3 hours is beyond awesome. The store just got new management and while the meat is a little pricey it is a small price to pay for the way eating this meat makes you feel!!! Ron Swanson would be proud of this place. #youhadmeatmeattornado read more

We loved our Pasture to Plate turkey! The texture was just as I remember from my great-grandparents' farm, where they raised and butchered everything themselves. I've only bought the best quality meats for that past 15 years, but this turkey was everything I could hope for. If you're used to the pasty-textured poultry meat from larger commercial farms, where tricks are used to alter and disguise the flavour and texture of even organic birds, you will find these quite different. The meat was tender but firm and VERY tasty. We loved it and all agreed we'll make P2P our first choice for all meat from now on. Their company practices and efforts sit well with me, and I rarely feel anyone's standards meet my own. ( sorry to sound snobby, but my opinions are formed from strict European ethics) I have two small quibbles: I was told there would be no organs included in my turkey, but there was a bag inside te cavity with heart and neck - I think the staff should have been informed of that. Also, I find the sausages a little too salty, (though I never add salt and avoid it like the plague, so it's probably just me). In every other way, the sausages are absolutely delicious, but more than that, they have a healthy, clean feeling to them. I sincerely wish all butchers had such exemplary practices. Please maintain them, P2P! read more

There is a big guy who only speaks Spanish working there the past few months and I am convinced that he has received no training in safe food handling whatsoever. Great place. It's one of the few spots you can get purely grassfed beef. Yes the cuts are fatty but the delicious golden butter (grass fed fat) is what you're after. We have been looking for a grass fed beef butcher for a long time and when we discovered Pasture to Plate (via Ethical Kitchen) we were pretty excited as we used to do a lot of our meat shopping in Washington State. The meat quality is excellent and we have had some excellent chicken and beef. For the most part we go straight to the freezer and skip the main display as we prefer to buy a two month supply at a time. Two issues that hopefully are resolved in the future: 1. The butchering itself is not very good. Often we will get cuts that have fat they shouldn't (gristle on tenderloin). Sometimes some cuts in the main display don't look as nice as they should either. 2. Re-freeze. I have noticed on two occasions that meat in the freezer is from the main display. Although I can understand they don't want to be wasteful, refreezing ground beef is obvious and I did not purchase it because I recognized it has been out in the open --- as well, we bought a frozen pack of NY which needed to be eaten immediately / much of it shaved off as it looked suspect when we discovered it had already been out in the open for an undetermined amount of time and then frozen. It takes businesses a lot to win our business so I certainly hope that the above will be resolved! read more

Appalling costumer service. I went there had my little dog under 5 pounds with me. I ask the clerk through the large street window if I could buy some ground meat for which I could pay cash as I could not bring the dog inside. I have been served there on other occasions.
