Got a gluten free strawberry shortcake from here for my 26th birthday a while back that looked nice…read morebut was pretty much inedible. Sopping wet, flavourless dense cake with the most bland frosting I've ever tasted, and somehow even the strawberry filling tasted like the juice at the bottom of a recycling bin. It genuinely tasted like they forgot to add sugar to the cake at all. I had one bite from it and the rest had to be thrown out. Save yourself the $100 and just bake your own cake. Or just have nothing, that would honestly be better.

Everyone arrived at the same time. I didn't put much thought in what I got. I didn't want to keep everyone waiting. I Just wanted to try a few things. Everything was 3.75 to 4.50 size are very small. Nanimo was a normal size but the cheesecake was about 3 bite. Wish they had a mix box. That way you could try the donut and other treats. Maybe a best sellers box with 4 bites. I like that everything I get her is celiac. I didn't know vegan could taste this good. It is definitely a treat and not something I would treat myself to everyday. They had a coffee menu and tables on the other side. Maybe I will try it the next time I go.

I really wish I'd gotten a photo of the little waiting area. They have all these colourful couches and lamps. It's like a little parlour. The spot is just so cozy. I even had to take a picture of the walls where the downstairs washrooms are located. They had gorgeous sunflowers painted all over them. The service is every bit as good as the food. The mimosas are worth it, lots of bubbles (some places really skimp, not Chesterfield's). They have many gluten-free options, which always makes me feel like I can eat like everyone else. I ordered the Bird's Nest Benny. The eggs were the most perfectly poached I've ever had at a restaurant. A side came with the benny, and I got the baked beans. The food was absolutely delicious. Potatoes, eggs, bacon, and maple-lime hollandaise that was to die for. There was so much food. Impossible to walk away hungry. Service was perfect as well. His name wasn't on the receipt, but he treated me like I was just as important as the group diners. No solo diner curse here. Cute spot, very clean, perfect service and food with quality ingredients. I will definitely stop in when I'm in Ottawa again.

They share a space with another resto who does dinner time. Line up and wait times can be disheartening, so plan to add your name to the list and take a walk around the area.

Everything had a strong taste of overwhelming acidity and sourness. My dining party got tacos, quesabriras, and the enchilladas. Only 1/3 items were enjoyable and all dining members said they would not return. The value for your money is also not great. Would not spend $25 for 3 tacos where you wont enjoy them....

The restaurant has two locations, the original one on Cadboro, which I've been to before, and this newer one on Wellington West. I feel that this location on Wellington West is a bit "hipper" and "cooler" yet more commercial. The Cadboro location, I found more like a family eatery and had more of a mom and pop feel. I got 2 tacos ($6.50 each), the barbacoa, and the chicken mole. My friend got 2 chicken quesadillas ($8 each). Both the tacos and quesadillas were really small, much smaller than I expected for the price. The barbacoa taco was pulled beef topped with onions and cilantro. The beef was tender and the seasonings were tasty. The chicken mole taco was topped with shredded lettuce, cheese and a white sauce. The mole sauce was sweet and had a strong chocolate flavour. The taco shells were corn tortillas and they give you double shells. I had to eat my tacos with a knife and fork because they fell apart when I tried to pick them up. My friend also had to eat her quesadillas with a knife and fork. Service was very pleasant. We got a glass bottle of water for our table. Our server checked up on us appropriately. Decor is very cool and colourful. Lots of Mexican items around. The restaurant in this space before Taqueria La Bonita was also a Mexican restaurant (the very short lived, La Cocina Loca), and the restaurant before that was also a Mexican restaurant (the second location for Ola Cocina, sadly it closed, but the original Ola Cocina in Vanier lives on). Prior to that it was Zazaza (a pizza place). I looked at their drinks menu and they have lots of creative and delicious sounding (and expensive) drinks. They have some sofa like chairs and the back of the restaurant has a more loungey feel. Overall I felt that the food was good, but too pricey for me, as I could have easily eaten 5-6 tacos and $30-$40 for a taco lunch is too spendy for me.

Food item prices are on the higher end, but that is reasonable considering the vibe or atmosphere…read moreof the place. Zak's Diner is at the heart of ByWard Market. There are plenty of botiques and other dining places nearby. You would get the option of patio dining outdoors or indoor seating. Food is standard diner fare with nothing noteworthy. There is an option to "poutinize your fries" for an extra $4.99, which I find a little bit much for the cheese curds and gravy. I did enjoy the Zak's Famous Milkshake ($8.99) and Ice Cream Float ($6.49). The Milshake was creamy and came with a metal cup filled with extra milkshake / whip cream. We came to have lunch a little past noontime rush. It was nice that we, a group of 2 people, were allowed to move to a table for 4 when we requested it. It was always welcome to have more elbowroom. Their table for 2 is a little bit cramped when you also have a bag or some other things with you.

*Great food* (Cooks) 5 star…read more My experience is with a rude/unhinged server/manager Sunday Oct 4th 2026 approximately 6:20 pm She projected her day on me, she says sorry just finished a rush was her reasoning. I could not find her or anyone to help me as I walked around the restaurant for 10 minute, cooks looked at me serveral times, I guess I came at the wrong time for service. I had asked for a manager & that's when she started projecting with the insults, calling me rude, bringing my daughter into it when my daughter went home across the street to go to the bathroom & manager telling me why my daughter left, really! great customer Service. I told her to stop 3 times but more insults kept coming, she said why do you come here then, I replied because I like the food, but not so much my service by her.... Busser then trying to cover for her, he said there is no one to speak to she is the manager after she already said i could speak to someone, that was like pulling teeth to have her write it down, scribbled on a piece of paper you can't make out part of the phone number or the name, you can't make this stuff up, she needed to deescalate You can clearly see the way she wrote on the paper, by this point I was in shock with her behaviour & continued projecting. I get it when you work together you want to cover for one another, so I thought I would address it here... anyways great food, but the lady server/manager representing ZAKS do better, I did not leave a tip & that's where her emotions took control of her. it all started with the sausages, no Jams for toast, no hp sauce, no extra napkins when needed, not asking if we would like refills on pops bringing my 1 sausage to go on a plate & takes the hp sauce away lol, but she just finished a rush is what she claims & that makes it ok, but yet I've been to ZAKS serveral times this week and there's no one in there when I've been in, if this is how she acts when not busy, I could imagine when it is busy. again do better as a manager, I'll say it again, you are representing ZAKS IN OTTAWA., Don't sabotage something that's not yours. The way you talk to customers, I wish the owner saw her whole demeanour....that would be grounds to be fired or time off.
