We dined in the enclosed outer area which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. The food here is among the best in New York City. The beet salad appetizer is fresh and delicious. The focaccia is huge and perfectly balanced. The calamari was the only dish which could have been portioned a bit larger but was also fresh & cooked perfectly, with 2 outstanding sauces. The manager makes a point to speak to every table and is knowledgeable about how each dish is prepared. Had a reservation for the family and we came out on a holiday weekend to a packed out restaurant. Always a good sign. The menu itself is clear and concise. Appetizers ordered were unique and absolutely delicious. The entrees were nice sized and tasted great. Not a single complaint here. Came here for a birthday dinner. It was a quite empty this night at the time we came. The restaurant is beautiful and very romantic for a first date or a nice occasion. The Wait staff here is amazing. They check on you all the time and aim to please. Problem here is I think they had an off night ( I hope). Like really really off night!! I ended up speaking with a friend who happened to be there the same night and found out he had the same exact experience. Over the course of dinner their food was over salted, bread was stale, and when the food came out it was luke warm to cold. I really don't like to complain during a meal (kills the vibe) so I spoke with the manager through email after the meal. Things like this shouldn't happen. We ate at Pastavino Trattoria. As a starter I had the MELA E GORGONZOLA raw & roasted apples, gorgonzola dolce, arugula, shaved fennel, toasted almonds, apple cider vinaigrette. My daughter ordered the Caesar, which is described on the menu u as a "rustic" salad the waiter warned us that it was heavy on the anchovy but she ordered it anyway. When the salads arrived I could smell the fish and cheese and my daughter took a few bites and didn't care for it. I swapped with her but also didn't care for it. My salad was delicious. The manager came by to express how sorry he was that we didnt care for the salad and offered her something else but not being really hungry she declined. For entrees my daughter had the Italian wedding soup which she said was delicious, my husband ordered the gnocchi which is Ricotta gnocchi, butternut squash, sage butter, grated cheese and I had the MELANZANE ALLA PARMIGIANO Crispy eggplant, mozzarella, marinara, shells in spicy vodka sauce. Both entrees were fabulous. We finished dinner with cappuccinos and strawberry gelato. An overall wonderful meal. And this is where they rose above the average restaurant. When our waiter delivered the check he informed us that they'd removed the $20.00 Caesar salad. This was an unexpected but very much appreciated effort in customer service. Omg! I feel like this place is a hidden geeemmmmm. Especially if you live in one of the other boroughs -- don't skip Pastavino. Sergio -- you're amazing!!! He helped me pick the best possible wine to pair with my dinner. I'm not a wine snob or in fact know anything about it so having someone like him who knew exactly what I should try and ended up liking. Yessss. Also, the portion are INSANE. I cannot believe how much food was on my plate. And yes, it was effing GOOD. I love the decor and they're right next to the water. Pastavino is arguably the best Italian restaurant on Staten Island. We went on a Friday night and the vibes were awesome. The place was packed and the music was great. Our appetizers were the highlight of the night. The Calabrese focaccia and the octopus were great. For our entrees, the short ribs were pretty dry and the greens in the cavatelli were not my favorite. I wish the rabbit ragu was prepared with more of a sauce base. Regardless, the pasta itself tasted very fresh and is noticeably homemade. The short ribs are probably something to pass on in my opinion. read more

Ambiance: This restaurant is lovely - there is no denying this. It is located by the harbor waterfront with gorgeous views of the city skyline. Inside, you will find a bar and wine display in the back, along with a spacious dining area. Service: When we initially arrived, the service given by the waiter and staff was okay - nowhere close to excellent. Then, once I was spotted taking photos of the restaurant and food, their attention towards us shifted and the service we began receiving went from okay to good, which is what we initially expected upon arrival for this fine dining experience. We love, love, love Pastavino! It is such a gem of a restaurant. From the moment you walk in you are transported. The ambience exudes so much warmth and coziness. It is truly beautiful. Pastavino is very aesthetically pleasing, where once you walk into the restaurant you feel as if you're transported into a relaxing and elegant atmosphere facing the waterfront! The service is also very professional, attuned, friendly, and warm. Our server, David, was very patient and kind, taking the time to explain to us certain ingredients we weren't familiar with, which we are very appreciative of! He also helped us find a seat that was warmer (in the terrace), which made our experience a lot more comfortable because today was definitely quite chilly, and the indoor dining was definitely colder due to it being air-conditioned. I want to take this moment to thank David for being so considerate and for demonstrating exemplary service! Now given the amazing service by David and the amazing ambiance, why the low score? Unfortunately it boils down to the food. We started off with the Polpo, which was the Spanish octopus with crispy potato and garlic aioli. The sauce was very mild in flavor, which did not enhance the flavor of the octopus by much. The octopus was also not cooked consistently throughout, where some parts was incredibly soft up to the point of having a raw texture, and some parts was overly charred leaving an intense bitter taste that overpowered the taste of the octopus. As you can see in the picture, the char was not consistent which left some areas tasting more burnt than charred. For our main, I got the Chittarra and my wife got the Bucatini Neri Vongole. My chittarra was overly al dente, which diverted my energy to chewing rather than savoring its taste. The owner, John, was kind enough to explain to us that due to their pasta being all homemade, it is often not possible to make them any softer than al dente due to it not having time to dry out to reduce its water content. The owner was kind enough to replace my dish with a different pasta which I appreciated. Would be helpful to highlight that on the menu in the future since not every diner will know this fact. However, although the remade pasta was softer, the dish itself was overly salty and the pork pieces were a bit burnt, which altogether detracted from the dish's creaminess and richness. My wife's bucatini was also very al dente, but she enjoyed it due to its generous amount of clams (although more shells than actual clams), which you can see in the pictures. The garlic, lemon, and crushed taralli all blended into a refreshing and savory mix, and my wife definitely enjoyed its flavor profile more than I did. Overall, I want to emphasize how amazing the service is from David; he really worked hard to ensure and provide diners with the best experience possible. Unfortunately this time it was a miss for us, but it could likely just be due to the selection we chose that was subpar and underwhelming. This is their autumn menu and will likely change depending on when you read this review, so good luck! (: Lastly, there was this little fly that bothered us the entire meal, so just keep that in mind if you dine in the terrace! Thank you for reading and best of luck! (: P.S. John, one of the owners, was kind enough to reach out to inquiry about our negative experience, which shows that he is dedicated in addressing issues diners have and trying to improve the restaurant as best as they can during these challenging times. However, the rationale he provided for the charred octopus was that it was typically served charred, and the saltiness of the Chittara was that it was simply how it is typically made in Italy, which was dismissive and highlighted only one issue without addressing my other concerns regarding the dishes (e.g., the inconsistent texture of the octopus, it being overly and inconsistently charred, mild flavor of the sauce, burnt guanciale, etcetera). Rationalizing a subpar experience of a dish by trying to normalize it by saying that is how it is made does not validate or empathize with the diner's experience, nor does it suggest any desire for growth and betterment, it dismisses and places the blame on the diner for not enjoying the food. Nonetheless, the important note to keep in mind is that if your experience is not optimal, do your best to speak up at the moment for David and the other friendly servers appear willing to remedy the situation as best as they can. I have not experience any rude waiters or waitresses as highlighted by other reviewers, but I have experienced the heavy handedness of the saltiness of the food that others have wrote about. If your dish comes out too salty, bring it to your servers' attention and I am sure they will do their best to address it! Ask for David and you will be professionally taken care of! My wife and I had our first meal at Pastavino and we know we'll be going back. The place itself is very attractive, elegant and comfortable at the same time. There are plenty of well-trained experienced employees there, serving the tables and making sure everything is to everyone's satisfaction. We were particularly happy to have Terri working at our table. She was warm, efficient, and knowledgeable! Needless to say, our meals were delicious. My wife's Branzino and my Lasagnette di Agnello were perfectly cooked and tasty, and just two of the items on a very satisfying and unique menu. Our appetizer and dessert were equally enjoyable. I had the gnocchi with corn ragout - delicious but maybe a bit more salt & my husband had the flounder which he really enjoyed. We started with the Caesar salad and the salad with walnuts and cheese - both excellent. Unlike Manhattan or Brooklyn, the portions are generous. First as soon as you walk through you get hit with an absolutely gorgeous ambiance. Between the huge wine cellar they have to the very modern look of the restaurant we were seated immediately. Our server greeted us and told her she just started and if she couldn't answer any questions. She would find the answer out which was very nice. But then the bad started. She didn't come back until another 15 mins to take our order. And it was not very busy not sure where you wondered to. After she took our drink and appetizer order we made the mistake of not ordering our meals. She was gone till the appetizers came out. Then she took our meal order. I highly recommend the charcuterie board it was absolutely amazing the different cheese and olives OMG the meats were so fresh as well. We also got the focaccia bread. Still warm and amazing. For my main I ordered the fra Diavolo which was not as spicy but that's alright they had delicious cherry peppers and the pasta wasn't in abundance with fresh pasta it's not the quantity it's the quality so if you want a large dish that you will take up it's not here. For dessert I had a slice or there tiramisu cheese cake. Which was alright. And their frozen expresso martini was delicious. All in all I had a great time the ding is only because of the service.
