Dont be fooled. This place seems highly rated and a nice facility. However, my first visit had many red flags. I chose this place out of convenience and will be returning to my home dental office for the following reasons below. 1- They misplaced my appointment and lost my information. I called and gave them everything over the phone two weeks prior to this visit. They claimed to have it again once I filled out the new patient paperwork. Go figure, of course they would have it again after giving it to them on the spot. 2- The work was very uninformative, no showing of your mouth or teeth during the cleaning or by the actual dentist during the work that I fucking paid for. No proof of my cavity before a fucking procedure to fill in a cavity I never saw. I should have just left before believing this dentist. 3- I feel this dental office just sucks up to patients and scams them into procedures that may not be necessary and further red flag by giving no proof for the procedure being needed. They will of course gladly let you pay for the procedure to which you were shown no proof of needing. I will be getting my xrays that they took here and going back to my professional dentist, even though it is inconvenient for me to keep going there. At least they will explain everything and dont make it feel like your just there to spend money. Nor mishandle my appointments. I will also get the procedure examined if a cavity really was there. I have never had so many red flags at a dental office before. Just keep in mind, never pay before asking proof of needing a procedure. I kept it to myself and now I'm out of pocket $88 for a cavity, when I had insurance! Stay away! *update* I was able to recieve credit for the charge with my credit card company, thank goodness! The cavity filling is now a sensitive area that I can't chew hard foods with. I can't wait to have an examination at another dentist to fix this tooth now. read more

The dentist did a great job on my root canal. Had a partial crown placed by another dentist. After the procedure the gum got swollen and tooth became infected. Dr Spero did a great job cleaning out the infection and preparing the tooth for a crown. I will definitely return for more dental care. read more

My experience with Dr. Spero and his team at Pasadena Smiles was amazing ! Dr. Spero is extremely kind, patient, and knowledgeable. His whole team working with him where all very professional and polite at all times during my visits in the office. Before I got in contact with Dr. Spero I had severe swelling in the left side of my jaw from what I later came to know was an infected tooth. Because of this pain I wasn't able to sleep comfortably for two whole days. Eventually the pain ended up being so bad that I had to search for a nearby dentist in the middle of the night. I was so lucky to have found Pasadena Smiles and have a conversation with Dr. Spero in the middle of the night explaining to him my situation. He was so kind to not only open his doors to me the first thing in the morning but on a holiday weekend as well. When I got to the office Dr. Spero numbed me then proceeded to take X-rays. He did a root canal and also made sure to clean my tooth very well after taking out the nerve. I was then prescribed medication to help cope with the pain. I did have to go back the following day to get a tooth extracted that had unfortunately gotten infected as well. Every time I had to visit Dr. Spero I was fully confident that I was in good hands. To anyone that is looking to find a trustworthy, understanding, and professional dentist. My experience here was wonderful. I had wisdom tooth pain that I'm sure all those whom have had them knows how excruciating the pain can be. This happened at the worst time possible right before 4th of July. I couldn't sleep and thought I was gonna have to bear the pain the whole holiday. I called multiple emergency dental places with no luck on a call back or response. Thankfully I called Pasadena Smiles and Dr. Spero returned my call and told me he would take care of me mind this was 4th of July morning. He waited for me in his office till I arrived and took great care of me while also explaining to me what the cause of the pain was. I was pregnant for 4 weeks when I had the worst toothache that made my ear pain, no one was willing to treat me because of the responsibility for treating a pregnant womam. Dr Spero asked me to come at 8 when his office is not opened yet, and treated me immediately. He was very skillful, he took out 3 teeth and also had bone graft done, whole procedure not counting time used for an astasia only took 15 minutes, and no pain. If I could give Dr. Spero 10 stars I would! I was in severe pain over this weekend and needed to see someone as an emergency. Im 25 weeks pregnant and it was LABOR DAY weekend. No one wanted or was able to help me BUT Dr. Spero. He literally came to my rescue and opened his office just to see me on actual labor day. I've never had any dentist treat me with so much compassion and care. He made sure everything he did was safe for both myself and the baby. Turns out I had a serious tooth infection and needed it extracted. He was so gentle, made sure I was really numb and extracted the tooth within 2 mintues. He was able to take it out in one piece including the infection sack attached to the tooth so no surgery or stitches where needed. I'm writing this review so that other people will not have to go through what I went through. I do not recommend this dentist as I found him to be completely unprofessional, a horrible practitioner, and unscrupulous. I came in to get an exam and teeth cleaning and had to wait an hour and a half to see the dentist. After my exam and teeth cleaning I was told I needed five (5) root canal treatments. I was confused because I had no pain. I thought I might have a couple cavities but that was it since it had been a while since I went to the dentist. There was a lengthy discussion on how much insurance benefit I had left. They kept telling me that I needed to have the emergency root canal treatments done right now and that the insurance would cover it. I told them that I only came in for a teeth cleaning and exam and wanted to get a some silver fillings replaced. I was told that I still had $4, 200 in my insurance to be used up. The doctor got me numb and started to drill on my teeth. I thought he was replacing some silver fillings, but instead, he not only replaced one silver filling but he performed two root canal treatments. The root canal treatments were done without my consent or being informed about why I needed them. They just kept repeating to me that I needed them and it's an emergency. On my way out after the appointment, the office manager said I needed to bring in $3,200 to pay for some crowns. I don't know what the crowns are for, and apparently they used up all my benefits. I was told I had to come back the next day with the money. The office manager was very threatening and also unprofessional. First of all, I am very grateful to Dr. Spero for being open for emergencies during the pandemic back in spring. I had a very bad toothache. The tooth needed a root canal which he successfully took care. The reason that I would give this business three stars is that along with my root canal, Dr. Spero discovered 5 cavities in my teeth. Obviously, I was concerned and decided to take care of them. I visited Dr. Spero every week for at least 2.5 months. Funny, during the time, he kept finding more and more cavities. What I thought was a two-three time visit turned into 2.5 months ordeal with weekly visits. During the last visit, which he previously concluded would be the last, he discovered yet another cavity in my tooth. His plan was to get rid of it by placing a crown on top. For those who don't know, it's a rather invasive procedure that involves lots of anesthesia. This is when I decided to look for another dentist. Long story short, two professional opinion later, no other doctor even mentioned that tooth with a cavity and the potential crown. This leaves me wondering how many "extra" fillings did Dr. Spero do for me? More importantly, how much extra money did I pay? Oh, and yes, he exhausted my dental insurance for the rest of the year. So, as of now, my two previously mentioned consultations and X-Rays were full cost for me. Finally, I would say that Dr. Spero is good for emergencies, however be very careful when it comes to routine visits. read more

Since I come back home once a year(I work in Asia), I was in need of a teeth cleaning. Unfortunately for me, working abroad doesn't allow for me to have health insurance here so I found this place on Groupon for $35! I also was in need of a mouth guard due to my teeth grinding. I called in and easily scheduled an appointment at noon for today(Thursday). Arrived 5 minutes prior to my appointment as recommended, filled out some paperwork, and was in the chair by noon. Teeth cleaning went by fast and was painless. Had a bit of blood but hey, who doesn't. Dr. Spero came and greeted me afterwards and informed me about the work that needed to be done. Amazing doctor who lowered the cost for me as I'm a cash patient and even worked out payment plans with April(front desk). Decided on getting my molars filled as there were some serious damage done throughout the years and ain't nobody got time and money to get root canals. Dr. Spero asked if I've ever had bad experiences with previous dentists and made sure that didn't occur today. He's absolutely amazing. So I just want to start out by saying that Dr.Spero is super caring and super straight forward as far as you know what you need, what you don't need and what he can do! I have been having pain in some teeth I needed some root canals and I was looking all over Google and Yelp for you know after hour dentists and I called this place and I couldn't get in right away sorry and I kept looking and then I got a call from Dr. Spero directly, asking me what's going on and how he could be of assistance... he talked me out of dropping thousands of dollars on an emergency dentist appointment with any random dentist and was able to fit me in the following morning! He broke it down to me he helped me get started at the root of the problem, figuratively and literally. Right off the bat Dr. Spero comes off as personable, gentle, thorough and profesional! He made sure I was numb and comfortable throughout the procedure.. the office is super clean and spacious, although given my pain, didn't get a full look.. they do except insurance I have a PPO, however just as a heads up this does office does not take Medi-Cal or Denti-Cal so just an FYI. At any rate I think he might be my new dentist because out of my 30 years of life he seems to be the first dental professional that wanted his patient to feel comfortable and actually want to come to the dentist. I've had some bad experiences as a child/teenager and usually dental procedures and/or preventative care cost a lot of money but I would not mind coming to see him every six month's or even every three months if needed!! I have been seeing Dr. Spero and Dr. Koutchek for years and they have always been honest, caring and easily accessible. I should have written a review long ago for any one of my unfortunate dental situations they handled, but today I am taking the time to write a review because of how amazing both of them were in my latest oral ordeal. I called Dr.Spero last night at 9pm, frantic, because I fell off an electric scooter smack onto the concrete. My teeth were basically hanging out of my mouth and my lip was completely busted open. He answered the phone immediately and had me FaceTime him. He then told me to go to the ER and he would meet me first thing in the morning. He kept reassuring me everything was going to be okay. Sure enough, he meets me at the office and his wife also joined to assist with my case. We still have a ways to go, but they got me looking normal again and they were so concerned and careful with me. Both of them really put me at ease! I wish I had the same experience as the people that think this is such a great dentist. Let me start with my first appointment that was supposed to be a cleaning. It was actually just a hygienist running floss through my teeth. I knew I needing fillings and was more than willing to do whatever needed to be done to keep my teeth as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, this ENTIRE staff took it as let's take out old fillings and put in new ones. This led to my teeth being sensitive for months. Next, I need a partial crown which was going to take a week for the fitted mold to come in. That led to an unorganized staff calling me 20 mins before my appointment saying they needed more time. All in all a significant amount of money and more time later I was done. A month later my front tooth filling chipped off. The original dentist was not available, so I went to his wife. As I'm waiting for the dentist the front desk came in to say that they were going to charge me because it was a different tooth. I explained it's the same tooth and that I've never had a problem with my previous filling, that they insisted to "fix". After arguing for 30 minutes, the dentist finally said "oh it was the same tooth". I have yet to go back to this place. If you truly cherish your teeth and want to enjoy your food I would stay clear of Pasadena Smiles. read more

TL;DR: Turns out I have healthy teeth so the new patient special was perfect. Prepared myself for a hard sale (even mechanic style lying) but what I got was an honest guy who seemed sorry that the help (and knowledge) he provided actually costs money. This morning I struggled with my contacts lens being blurry, so I decided to look into dr's appointments which got me to thinking... I haven't been to a dentist in 10 years! Mostly because my company doesn't pay for dental insurance (my first and only job out of college) and I've feared how much it costs, but also because I feared (1) the existence of cavities and (2) researching which dentist to commit to. But enough is enough and it was time to conquer my fear. So I searched my town and basic dental checkup. I stumbled upon a deal that's cheaper than the price of my eye doctors visit! So I decided, I can afford that deal and take my chances on a routine check up. But at that price I knew they were losing money or something was going wrong. So I Yelped them. Mostly good reviews and a few scathing ones. But I figured, I'll just get what's in the "New Patient" deal and fight any upsale. So I called and got an appointment for the same day! Okay. Actually perfect for me. Let's pull off that bandaid. But there's just enough time for me to do my research. How much are they losing? That might inform the degree of upsale I should expect. So I Googled the typical costs and for what they were offering. I would be getting a basic teeth cleaning and digital x-rays. I figured at this rate I'd get the minimum number of x-rays. Quora says $25-30 per photo, typically they take 4 which means $50-100, but a full panaroma would be 18 which would be $100-200. So whatever they're doing the x-rays might be their biggest expense. The visit: clean normal office in Pasadena, far enough north of the freeway to remind what quiet sounds like. Parking was street parking which was fine because I could actually park in front of their office without paying for parking. Inside, it's a normal quaint place, clean and organized. I confirm the deal and they honor it no questions asked for the price they listed without me even needing to show the discount. Good signs. I'm expecting everyone to be disappointed with a customer who's going to a dentist because it's the cheapest one offered. I get lead to a room and the assistant gets everything ready for me. Nice lady, forgot to ask her name. Pleasant and now it's time for the doctor. On the phone he sounds New Yorker. So already I'm worried. But he enters with an honest smile and a handshake. I normally don't read handshakes, so let's just say it wasn't the alpha male con-man handshake. It carried the flavor of fearing being judged by me, a new patient who's price sensitive. Maybe fearing any slight slip up for a bad Yelp review. But he seemed honest and before long it seemed like he was very honest and liked to share. It was clear that schmoozing wasn't his forte but neither is mine. So I asked good questions and he answered well and knowledgeably. Finally the results: I was looking at the x-rays before he came in and I didn't see any spots on my teeth, but I don't know how to read them. At the very least, if he says no cavities (after 10 yrs of no dentists) then I'd believe him. He has more reason to upsell me with "here's a cavitiy and this is the work that we should do." Turns out, he says "No cavities" your gum-bone (wrong word probably) is recessing a bit on this side, so just brush less hard and use a "soft" brush. Great! I asked some more specific questions and we discussed what I must be doing right and he said keep up the good work. It's some combination of what you're doing food-wise, flossing-wise, or brushing-wise though it could also be good genes. At that point I decided that I needed to call my dad and thank him. First for his genes, but mostly for being on top of me for brushing and teaching me good habits. And for taking me to dentists and paying for braces. But first I asked for copies of the X-rays, expecting either digital printout or having to pay for them. I expected having to pay because that's what my mom warned me about. She also said, pay it, better to have it for you record than not. So I was ready to pay. But instead he says, if you don't want hard copies, we might be able to work out a cheaper option. And he did. So I walked out with images of the x-rays and a full teeth cleaning (from his assistant). I walked out happy. I got what I paid for and more. I wanted to get the basics and sample a dentist. If I needed more work I would be stressing right now about which doctor to go with and actually doing the research. But for what I needed, I got what I expected and nothing more. He was actually first to say, you don't need anything more, just regular 6-9 month teeth cleaning. So I might just do that. Although that's a decision for future me to stress about. read more

I was eating skittles on a friday night 9:30 and i heard my tooth break. Luckily i googled 24 hour dentist and Dr Spero answerd the call when i called him. Gave me a 930 App, the next day. The thing was this quaritine thing had me scared i wasint going to be able to even see a dentist. He made everything so easy. The whole time he was like we arae going to have to pull this tooth. He comes to do the work and 5 min in he is like we can save it. I dug that makes me feel like he is there to do what he can for my health and my pocket book. 03/13/2018: New update. My husband is currently at a DIFFERENT dentist getting hoots molar pulled. Why? Because this piece of garbage "fancy" Pasadena Smiles did a shoddy job with his crown. Well, it took about 4 years but the tooth eventually rooted underneath and there's no saving it, so our current dentist told he has to pull it out since the crown has completely come off as well. 08/20/2014: This place really screwed us. According to them, my husband needed more work but we had maxed out our insurance benefits for that year. They said that it was not immediately necessary that he get the work done, however it had to be done eventually. So it could have waited several months before the new year when the dental plan was renewed. Pasadena Smiles, apparently, could NOT wait those several months because they suggested that we do something unethical (most likely illegal) because they do this all the time for their patients. They pushed for us to get the work done and to pay them the $1200+ in cash (or $1400+, I can't remember the amount anymore). They said they would then post-date the x-rays or whatever evidence they needed to submit to our insurance company as proof of the work. While we were skeptical, they assured us that it was fine and that we would get our money back once the insurance company reimbursed them because, after all, this was not the first time they pulled something like this. They justified it as something like, "Well, you're going to get the work done in a few months anyway, so it's not like we're lying about it." So against our better judgment, we foolishly agreed to give them the money. As bad luck would have it, my husband ended up losing his insurance around the same time that that work was dated to by submitted to the insurance company. He was shortly able to get that insurance back a couple months after but it was too late. They told him that they could not make any changes to that "proof" once the original date was put in, so in a nutshell they said we were sh!t out of luck, that they were keeping our money and that was that. I'm not to say that we were completely blameless here. However, since Pasadena Smiles was the one who came up with this brilliant plan and pushed us to do it, wouldn't it be fair to refund us at least 50% of that cost? They lose a little, we lose a little. But no, that's not the way they saw it. Live and learn, right? read more

There should be a special place in heaven for orthodontists who are open on Saturdays. I hadn't been to Pasadena Smiles before, but I bit down into something and one side of my permanent retainer popped off, leaving an exposed wire poking into my mouth. It was Saturday, and every dentist I called was either closed or didn't do orthodontic work. Until Pasadena Smiles! They fit me in literally 20 minutes before their closing time. They did a fantastic job sealing down my permanent retainer. It's not going ANYWHERE now ;). The doctor was so kind and the girl at the front desk even gave me a discount, almost half off the full cost, because I didn't have insurance. Seriously, this could have been such a stressful, expensive experience, but the folks here were helpful, competent and kind. read more

What a great Dental Experience, I read all the Yelp ads before going to this dentist. I read the bad reviews and the great reviews.. let me give you the entire overview of the office experience. The Dentist is very personable, friendly, and goes out of his way to work with your financial budget. Dr Spero is quick and efficient and knows his way around your mouth. I received novicane to block my nerve , and The needle was place in the right spot to block my nerve for a procedure. The needle was placed right the first time and Dr Spero took into account my medicine that I was taking. Anywhere you go you are going to have someone misplace a file or quickly go over your cavity.. Bottom line, Dr Spero is efficient, knows what he is doing and provides comfortable care to you as a patient. Eric J read more

No, I am still not happy with the outcome, and the mere 20% refund of my original $600+ bill still leaves me feeling cheated. Please, if you want to RETAIN customers and attract new prospects, do NOT cheat and mislead unknowing people. This place is absolutely terrific!!... I've had several bad experiences at the dentist that have left me terrified of going to the dentist... I mean utterly terrified-- like teeth chattering, tensed up, sick to my stomach terrified !! They treat people really well, and the dentist is super nice, professional and understanding. He really understands the patients and works with them well-- and caters to them. He is really awesome!! Like I can leave with peace of mind, knowing that it was a piece of cake-- and just an overall good experience. Also, the office staff is GREAT, cuz we all know when we go to the dentist or doctor we deal more with the office staff than the actual doctor. The atmosphere is GREAT!!... They said they take my insurance(every other dentist in the LA does). I went for digital ex rays and a cleaning. I paid my $25 copayment, then two weeks later a bill for $1000 arrived at my house. I called to question and they said my regular insurance doesn't cover premier treatment. WHAT? The dentist didn't even speak English. How is that premier? Every other dentist works with my full coverage insurance. It was a horrible experience. I would never go back there, and I hope you keep looking for a better dentist. read more
