What a weird shelter this place has become, there are unnecessary procedures to interact with the animals you're interested in, volunteers that feel like security guards surveillance, in addition to wearing gloves, no touch, filling out a form and waiting in line to see an interaction counselor, do they really want people to adopt? I have adopted twice before from PHS, once in 2003, in 2015, and now looking to adopt again...but the experience this time really weirded me out, it felt so cold. Maybe I reminisce about the past in many respects, it was so simple, it gave interested families a chance to connect to the pets. There's no doubt that they are well funded, and the facility is grand, I'm not sure if it's serving the purposes as a shelter anymore. read more

My review of the "new" Pasadena Humane will echo that of Yelper Sweetie P, who, like me, was a fan of the old, pre-makeover and pre-woke facility. It is now so offensive and off-putting that after two visits I will never return. The old un-escorted "walk through" system was fine for seeing cats and allowing spontaneous interaction & bonding which encouraged adoptions. Now you need to provide personal info and be assigned an escort to see cats that are not even viewable because they are hidden behind "privacy" curtains placed in their cage to "de-stress" them. W T F ????? These protocols DISCOURAGE adoptions! If you want the oldschool warm & fuzzy experience of looking for a special cat to adopt, go to the Baldwin Park animal shelter. Visited this place before the remodel when I adopted Sparky many years ago. I definitely intend to adopt from this place again. I'm hoping my mom will as well. They have a program here where you can adopt a senior dog for free if you are 60 and over!! How great is that?!?! Since my last visit many years ago, this place has definitely gotten bigger. They have more parking spaces now that can be found underground since the remodel. There's still the few parking spots near the entrance, but there's also street parking. The containment area outside for the dogs are a good size and they all looked clean. I saw a few volunteers reading to a few dogs which I thought was interesting. There's also an outside play area where I saw a dog with one of the employees playing. The indoor containment area for the cats is also a good size and clean looking. Saw this really neat play area where a cat or two can play around in. Saw a few cute bunnies. They had room to hop in and their areas were also clean. If you want to donate some stuff like unopened regular dog food or dog toys, you can place them in a container located in the underground parking or in a container near the store. If you want a donation receipt, go into the Shelter Shop and they will write one out for you. They don't dispose of unused pet medicine. Those need to go to those medicine containers that you can find at CVS or Albertsons. read more

Rosie is the person I spoke with when reporting animal abuse. She has a lack of compassion. She was smiling while I told her about this abusive situation and when I thanked her for her help she just hung up. I did call back to address my concerns about her lack of compassion and zero phone etiquette. She is really either over worked, stressed, or just not a compassionate human being. I feel like they don't take things seriously in dire situations, have no recourse or sense of action and this whole situation is heartbreaking. I've been dealing with an animal left alone barking all day and night and now left out in the rain. Idk if they will ever dispatch an officer to help this animal. I'm sick to my stomach over this and I don't understand the lack of compassion Rosie had and to just hang up on me after I said thank you for helping me. No you're welcome, no response, just hang up. I was honest with her about the nearest shelter being closed and this one being the closet shelter that was open. She wanted to refuse to accept the animal and attempted to accuse me of abandoning the animal when we were at an animal shelter! I would not recommend this location. This is our second time rescuing some kitties here in the past 4 years and both times we had a great experience!! The staff are so eager to help and very knowledgeable. And the process is fast and easy - and they really go out of their way to help you adopt - they even give you vouchers for free first health exams with VCA and free pet food and litter (if they haven't run out). And they give you a discount if you adopt two pets at once - basically you only pay for one adoption which is awesome!! The first time we came, we rescued a sweet 2 year old cat and an elderly senior kitty with some health issues. They were in cages next to each other and were just too sweet - we had to have them both! Recently, we lost the elderly kitty and our younger one has been so down and lonely! Which made the heartbreak even harder to bear - so we've been keeping our eye on their website here for available male cats. Their website has a great search function that lets you filter out pets available for adoption - we decided to try and get 2 male kittens, preferably from the same litter - that way none of our fur babies will ever be lonely again! It was quite a challenge bc kittens get scooped up fast lol - but last week we got so lucky!! Adoptions are by appointment only - so when we saw an influx of kittens, we made an appointment for the next day and were able to adopt two 6-week old brother kittens yay!! I think we got lucky bc all the other kittens were already adopted - but the two we got were "unsocialized" (aka feral) and were very scared - we couldn't even pet them. The staff said it's harder to get them adopted bc it takes a lot of work - but I am totally up to the challenge! They're absolutely precious little things! We had to wait to take them home bc they were scheduled to be neutered the next day which gave me time to get their training room and playpen all set up. We picked them up the day after their surgery and they were absolutely terrified - poor babies! The shelter gave me TONS of info on how to work with them to get them from being super scared and spicy to cuddly and mild - their instructions, along with videos from The Kitten Lady, have been fantastic to go by - it's totally working!! We've had them almost a week now and I'm already able to pet them a little and they'll eat out of my hands yay!! I bet they'll be cuddling in my lap by the end of this week! Parking is mostly street parking but there are some spaces in a private lot too. When you arrive for your appointment, call the number on the sign at the locked gate and they let you in. This facility is amazing! Clean and inviting for visitors. You can tell there is great care for the animals and facilities compared to other's facilities. The staff is friendly, whether they are staff or volunteers. They have retail shop which is great. A few things to remember- You need to go on line and make an appointment to visit the animals for adoption, Monday thru Friday. Their SOP states that they are supposed to have a holding period of 120 hours but NOPE, they gave up what's potentially my parrot to the first person that walked in wanting it the next day after being turned in. I did my best to save a kitten and they had me back and fourth I don't live around here but found it in Pasadena they told em to arrive before 5:30 and I made it 5:20 and they said I was late. So I waited for the animal control people and they made me wait from 5:30-7 pm I felt so bad for the kitty so I waited and waited.... I was very surprised how nice the workers and volunteers at this shelter were, only because I've been to other shelters in LA and none have compared to this facility. One worker/volunteer in specific really embodied the definition of empathy, care, and kindness when I spoke with him outside. His name is Mike and would personally like to thank him for his sweet demeanor. Although I couldn't bring my dog in here to surrender, he was very empathetic to my situation, heard my story and went as far as giving me resources and a list of rescues for me to call. They keep their available dogs on the website current (they use petfinder.com). When we fell in love with a dog online, I looked into the adoption process and found out we needed to book an appointment to even see the dog. The next morning, there were no appointments. However, I just kept refreshing the page and sure enough, someone canceled and we got an appointment same day. The dog we originally wanted left with a family as soon as we got there. But we found another dog (sibling of the dog we wanted). The adoption process was simple and they explained it all on the website so we knew what to expect. When you find a dog you like, book an appointment ASAP because they don't hold animals. They gave us a sample bag of food and our puppy's medication. The shelter itself is very clean and the animals are treated with love. We're extremely happy with our adoption process. Also, the Shelter Shop has a great selection of items. Price is comparable to any other pet store out there. This is our first dog so we got a good amount of stuff that were in the clearance section and you get 10% off at the shop for adopting a pet. read more

In 2008 my sister was an animal control officer for Pasadena Humane. She rescued two puppies that were abandoned in a brown paper bag. My other sister was fostering them. I stopped by to visit her and to meet them. She told me she was going to adopt the boy. When I left the little girl ran out and followed me to my car. She was adorable. My sister called me the next day and told me that if I wanted her she would be up for adoption on Saturday. I went to PH on Saturday and brought my princess Coco Chanel home. A few months later I got an e-mail from PH about their annual fund raiser - the Wiggle Waggle Walk. I looked at Ms. Chanel and said, "They saved your life, now it's time to give back." Coco and I have been participating in the Wiggle Waggle Walk every year since then. Our team's name is BiteMe! Squad. January 2019, I saw a post from PH about a senior Chihuahua. He didn't have a bottom jaw or any teeth. Plus, he had a grade 4 heart murmur. Even though he was soooooo cute, I thought the chances of him getting adopted were slim. I went in to see him on a Saturday and brought him home the next day. His name is Beignet. I love all my furbabies (5 dogs, 1 cat - all rescues.) but Beignet and I have a special bond. When everything shut down at the beginning of COVID Pasadena Humane sent an e-mail requesting fosters because staff at the shelter would be limited. My bunny, that I've had for 14 years, had a large enclosure that I had bult for him, so I figured there was room for one more and I signed up to foster bunnies. My BunBun passed of old age about a month after our 1st foster found a home. The house felt so empty without him and there was such a sadness in my heart. I got a call two days later from PH telling me they had a senior bunny that needed a foster. I wasn't sure I was ready but decided it was the best way to honor my BunBun, so I said yes. Dexter was exactly what I needed to heal my broken heart. (He almost became a foster failure.) After Dexter found a wonderful home I fostered Cinnamon & Thumper and then Lola. I'm waiting for the call for my next foster. I've been to PH numerous times. It's a beautiful shelter. The enclosures are spacious. The staff are wonderful, and they are very compassionate about the animals they care for. Their shelter shop is fantastic. They offer a summer camp for kids and various online line educational classes. They also have a pet food bank for owners in need (which I bring in donations for), a mobile clinic, and other services for the community. read more

Pasadena Humane's Foster Team is excellent! Besides aiding neonate kittens and large dogs, they're also are compassionate, caring, and giving individuals. The Pasadena Humane Society's Foster Program gives fosters an ability to take the animals time away from the shelter. The Shelter Team takes care to make sure there is a positive match between foster parent and foster pet. The dog I had taken out as a Foster to Adopt (FTA)was in a unfortunate accident less than a week after we had brought her home. The Foster Office moved quickly to have us bring the dog to the shelter where she would receive medical treatment. The Foster Team triaged her while they were waiting for the medical team. Free medical treatment is part of the fostering process. Thanks to their quick actions and care, my "foster princess" is on the mend. The Foster Team of Nadia, Paola, Inessa, Taylor, and Ruby deserve a big shout out! read more

Enjoyed an early morning walk with the PH Wildlife coordinator this morning at Mountain View Cemetery. It was a leisurely pace, we saw some birds and coyotes, some interesting local famous people who are buried there, and as we were about to finish up, we were thrilled to see a Great Horned Owl getting ready for bed up in a tree. The ticket cost was more than reasonable and this was a unique outing. In general I appreciate the hard work PH does, and in general I think a good job is done with the resources at hand. Please continue to educate the public on what PH does and does not do, what PH can and can not do. PH has some helpful community services that many don't know about. I think some progress could be made in developing more partnerships with people outside of PH who can help in other ways (example: there are many of us who do TNR work locally, so when someone might call in to PH to request help with feral/community cats, it might be helpful to pair them up with us who do TNR work - but I also recognize there are logistical issues with anything like this). read more

I've adopted several animals here (and 3 at other shelters) over the years and it was truly sad how horrible we were lied to and treated the last time we were here. The lady who helped us made her judgment before we even stepped into the shelter to meet the dog we had wanted to adopt. I've adopted 3 dogs and 3 cats in a 20 year span...they've ranged from healthy 8 week old puppies/kittens to an extremely overweight 11 yr old dog with heart condition, thyroid issues and cataracts...I've give them good, happy forever homes.... Anyways, my daughter had made an appointment to see a cat listed on their website for her apartment. A lady at the shelter called and said the cat is actually not at their center. It's at a pet store so she didn't need an appointment with them and canceled the appointment . I told my daughter to please call back and keep the appointment because I wanted to see a little senior dog for my home, so she rebooked her appt. I went to the shelter to meet my daughter. An employee asked if I needed any help. I told her I was waiting for my daughter and her response "Oh yea! I know who you are. I need to speak with you". As I waited outside the fence, I saw other people with other employees inside being shown dogs. The employee would also tell them about other dogs they may be interested in. 2 other ladies were behind me and when my daughter arrived, we were let in. Another employee took the 2 ladies in to see animals available. The lady who spoke to me outside told us to wait as she needed to speak with us. She instantly questioned why we went from a cat to a dog. I explained why. Instead of leading us back to the dog, she told us to sit in the office, came back 15 mins later and said she simply couldn't get the dog out because the dog was so traumatized and didn't want to be touched. She tried all kinds of treats, even chicken. Lie lie lie! She didn't realize I had already visited this dog twice, and knew "Tiny" was in the holding area next to the office and I had seen her from the outside. She had also approached me both times without any fear. The lady simply didn't want us to see and/or have "Tiny" and told us we should go somewhere else. Is it race since we were Asian and everyone who seemed to be let inside were white and the employee was white? Or she believes if you originally want a cat you now can't change your mind and decide on a dog...is it one or the other or nothing at all for her? Maybe she was reserving her for another family or simply didn't like us, but it was incredibly unfair to be judged and lied to. I think after our last experience here 4 years ago I shouldn't have even given this place another try. I adopted a 6 year old dog from who's owner would never come to pick her up. "Melrose" was there for 3ish weeks before the owner finally gave her up. I adopted her. 2 months later they called me wondering if I was interested in giving her back because the owner regretted the decision and was now upset. I told them my girls and didn't want too. They called me back everyday for nearly a week because the lady kept calling them. After the 4th conversation I stopped answering their calls and then they emailed me. Anyway, we ended up adopting a dog from another shelter without any issues. No online appointment needed, no waiting outside the shelter to be escorted and mistreated by a judgey employee. Everyone who walked in that shelter got the same treatment. It wasn't left to the employee to decide who got to walk through and who didn't....who got sent to the office anticipating on meeting the dog while the employee got her acting talents together to go lie to them.
