Marshak is a kind & fair judge. The court itself is clean, security is throughout, etc The mediators are unfortunately not neutral. The mediator assigned to my case attempted to pressure me into signing an unfavorable settlement using repeated scare tactics. When I declined, he shared stories about past cases where parties refused deals and supposedly regretted it. Even after I politely stated that I would not accept the terms, he continued to push and advocate for the other party. When I firmly said, " I decline" he replied with, "Do you even know what you're disagreeing to?" Trying to undermine me, make me feel unsure, and sway with what he wanted, constant pressure. My answer was simply -- the answer was no, and that was that. I did not follow his advice because the proposed settlement did not make sense for the situation. Instead, we were able to work out a better, mutually beneficial agreement on our own. Had I listened to the "neutral" mediator, I would have been set up for failure due to his personal biases. read more

My experience with the PPA was extremely disappointing and highlighted serious flaws in both the process and the judgment of the assigned assessor, Cristina Vasquez. Communication was inconsistent, follow‑through was minimal, and I had to repeatedly reach out just to get basic clarity. But the most concerning issues came from the assessment itself. During the interview, Cristina claimed that I "knew the PPA date," which is simply not true. While a date had been tentatively set, the respondent failed to appear, and the judge clearly stated on the record that the PPA could not move forward until she filed her waiver. That instruction came directly from the court, not from me. Cristina dismissed this fact and delivered her response in a condescending tone, as if I had ignored instructions that never existed. The interview she conducted was surface‑level. She didn't witness the actual behavior that matters, including the emotional escalation and statements my daughter has made. Important issues were mentioned once and never followed up on. The evaluation relied on brief snapshots instead of the full reality, and it showed. What makes this even more troubling is Cristina's final recommendation. She decided it was appropriate to uproot my children from the only stable home they've ever had in California, their school, their medical providers, their routines, and their entire extended family, and move them to another state with only their mother and no other family support whatsoever. Every member of their mother's family lives here in Los Angeles, not in Oregon. The recommendation ignores their history, their stability, and the actual facts presented. If you're expecting a thorough, balanced, or reality‑based evaluation, that was not my experience. The process is flawed, the interview is incomplete, and the final recommendation does not reflect the children's best interests or the facts of their lives. read more

Absolute unlawful courthouse, the underlying fact is that the judgement was made against me BEFORE I KNEW about the hearing date, I informed the judge and she didn't care and upheld her judgement. Judge Tricia Garcia is no way interested in justice or fair trials. Today I told her what the other judge said in the other court, and she basically told me to shut up or she would have me arrested. Completely unjust, I was never ever given the opportunity to prevent my side in this case and when I told her that, again the judge made threats. She was not interested in me saying my side, she was only interested in having the other party win or she would not have violated so many of my rights. no matter what proof i gave her she was not interested in hearing the facts or the truth. She only wanted to hear with the other party had to say. I've never been treated so unfairly in my entire life and I've never seen a judge disregard a party in a case like this before. I feel like I was psychologically raped by this judge in her courtroom. If you have to ever go to Pasadena Small Claims Court, I highly recommend you request a transfer away from this judge if you want a fair trial. Many people have already requested changes outside of her courtroom, and they have gotten fair trials elsewhere. Don't have your case heard in front of this judge, Unless you want to see her exercising her power and authority over you regardless if it's done within the perimeter of the law or not. I'm fine to admit when I'm wrong, but this is not one of those times. the other side just told me outside the courtroom that they literally sued me because of someone I have on my staff - they don't like the person managing their property. And they never talk to me about this case before, but I still lost. I told the judge the other side never talk to me about this, but the judge was not interested in hearing anything at all she only wanted me to be quiet If anyone else has been unfairly treated by Judge Tricia Garcia or anyone wants to get together on a Class action lawsuit to do something about this law breaking inside the courtroom (or is working on a criminal case on this subject- because if this continues, I'm sure there will end up being one ), please reach out to me. Judge in Dept A , doesn't review the evidence, nor are her decisions based on actual LAW but what seems like a random split in an attempt to be fair even though the evidence proves the defendants lied through their teeth and blatantly broke several laws. Where is the justice and fairness in regards to my injuries? Although it may not have been my best representation of the facts because I was shaking and I was so nervous, my case WAS proven for every single thing in my claim. Defendant should not only be held in contempt for all the lies she told (which again, I proved through evidence) she should be in jail for medical battery for the injuries she caused. Defendant is not even a doctor, she is a nurse practitioner who broke many laws and I was only awarded a fraction of the judgment which means there is no resolution to my injuries, health or healing for me. This is just devastating. When the facts where there! The judge just didn't take the time to review. This review won't change anything in my case but may it serve as a record for when this defendant severely injures someone else for practicing beyond her credentials. Don't bother with this courthouse unless you are ordered to appear here. Liberal judges like Jerry B Marshak act based upon their feelings and not based upon the actual evidence. In fact he did not even look at the evidence and was furious when I did not know it had to be submitted via portal. He said that I escalated a situation at Home Depot by not showing my receipt. Imagine that a judge saying that a Home Depot associate has the right to tell you to stop and drop everything in order to prove you've already paid for items that are yours despite a receipt in hand. Additionally my court case was supposed to be at 10am but despite getting there early I did not leave court until 3:30pm. read more

The ladies in clerk office for family law are rude and incompetent. Even after showing them I had an appointment the girl with the lashes said she didn't know what I was there for and that she couldn't help me. I explained to her and even showed her my phone of the appointment. Even after explaining to her what I was there for, she smiled, laughed and said yeah I don't know. She then gets up and goes the other clerk and they both laughed, and weren't helpful at all. Why do people get jobs and can't even offer to help. Extremely unprofessional experience with commissioner marcelo d'asero. He was verbally abusive, yelling and banging on the desk at litigants. Most concerning was his lack of familiarity with the court's evidence system, because he did not know how to operate the technology, he incorrectly blamed me for 'not submitting evidence' that was already in the system. He was condescending, mocked people in open court, and abused minute orders to cover his own errors. Most alarmingly, he explicitly stated, 'Nothing you say will change my mind,' before I had even began presenting my main case arguments, a clear admission of prejudgment. Constantly interrupted and yelled at litigants from other cases as well. He didn't understand some of the rules and procedures of small claims and just winged it. This commissioner actively creates a hostile environment that undermines the right to a fair small claims hearing. He is not qualified to be sitting on that bench if he cannot handle the basic tools of the job. If you happen to get commissioner marcelo d'asero for your small claims case, it is your right to request a real judge before the hearing. At least maybe you might get a fair chance at a trial. This courthouse is fake, the rulings here are from incompetent judicial officers, and based upon personal beliefs, notwithstanding law. By failing to cite or engage with the actual contents of a §995 motion, the prosecution defaulted on the burden of defending the information's legal sufficiency. A judge observing proper judicial role should either grant the motion outright or demand clarification- not invent a defense theory that was never asserted. When the prosecution files an opposition to a §995 motion but fails to cite or respond to the specific arguments raised in the defense's motion itself, it violates the principle of responsive pleading, and in California, that omission carries serious weight especially when coupled with the trial court's failure to hold them to task. Legally and philosophically, the judge presiding over a §995 motion is bound to evaluate the legal sufficiency of the evidence in the preliminary hearing based strictly on the arguments and record presented. The judge is not an advocate, nor is he permitted to shift the legal burden or inject an independent justification to salvage the magistrate's holding order when the prosecution has failed to do so themselves. Let us dissect the problem clearly, then state how everyone's rights are undermined at this courthouse. Under Penal Code §995(a)(2)(B), a defendant moves to set aside an information if the magistrate committed legal error by holding the defendant to answer without reasonable or probable cause. This motion is not a re-litigation of the facts, but a legal attack on the sufficiency of the evidence presented at the preliminary hearing. The motion requires the superior court judge to review only the transcript and evidence from that hearing, not outside arguments or speculation. The motion DOES NOT require a showing of judicial abuse of discretion. Nobody knows why the judge inculcated that. Perhaps it was because they never read the motion which they claimed to have read. The motion alleged that the evidence presented, taken at face value or in proper context, was insufficient to establish probable cause for at least one material element of the charged crime. All elements are core elements. That alone dismantles the prosecution's basis to bring the charge before a magistrate, and requires dismissal, regardless of whether the magistrate's conduct was "abusive." The judge played an inappropriate role in inventing the prosecution's defense. A judge must not act as an advocate for the opposing party. A court is bound by the adversarial structure of proceedings, and when a party fails to justify its position, the court may not fill in the gaps on their behalf. When the prosecution did not defend the holding order on the grounds of judicial discretion, the court had NO authority to insert that theory sua sponte as the basis for denying the §995 motion. This is especially true because a §995 motion is decided based on the record and legal arguments raised, not on speculative judicial justifications. Judicial neutrality is meant to be a fundamental guarantee. especially when evaluating whether the government had legal cause to prosecute a citizen. When the court rejected the §995 motion based on a rationale that neither the defense nor the prosecution ever argued, and which was irrelevant to the actual legal claim, it engaged in impermissible advocacy, undermining the legitimacy of the process. The judge's decision was based on an incorrect legal standard, such as requiring proof of abuse of discretion when the §995 motion was about legal insufficiency. The trial court denied the defense's Penal Code §995 motion on grounds not argued by the parties and unrelated to the legal standard governing the motion. By conditioning its ruling on an unsupported requirement -that the defense prove judicial misconduct rather than evidentiary insufficiency THE COURT MISAPPLIED THE LAW and violated judicial neutrality. Is courthouse has an issue with procedural fairness, which is the legal idea that the court must judge only what is argued, only by the rules, and only with neutral regard for the outcome. The facility is grand but the people who work here are few brain cells away from incompetent. I don't know what's personally wrong with them, but they have certainly gone awry, and the world does not have enough applicants or candidates to replace these defective officers of the courts. They are meant to be fair and impartial, they are meant to stand for fairness, correctness, equality, justice and liberty but instead, they stand for their own egos as if anyone gives a damn about who they are personally. We only care about the work which needs to be done that day in court --not who performs it. If they need to change their names and wear face masks to enforce the law instead of their own personal beliefs, then we have employed the wrong people. These people must have faith in the law, they must adjudicate the law as it is meant to be enforced, and they must do so knowing that the outcome of justice has nothing to do with their personal beliefs. We never bent or broke the law, but our arguments against false allegations fell onto deaf ears and daft heads. We argued well, and legally during pretrial "negotiations" but the prostitutor evaded every single argument which would have defeated their unjust position against us, and they steamrolled us with ignorance, incompetence and animosity prejudiced as adamant discretion. We then filed motions, to which they filed oppositions that had NOTHING to do with the substance of our motions. We then replied addressing the defective opposition, mentioning that it was irrelevant to the points and authorities of the motion it opposed. The hearing for that motion was neither about the motion nor a discussion of the law. The judge spoke with vicious animus and denied the motion which he clearly never read, and then abused his discretionary power to refuse to reference ONE PART of the motion to prove that he ever read a single line from it. There is disgustingly gross misunderstanding of the law on the court's part but obviously nobody is able to highlight it. It's a fun game to these people. That's the thing with these people. They arm their egotistic prejudice with "discretionary powers" which the people of this nation have wrongfully trusted them with, and then they defend against any argument regarding abuse of that power, by asking for proof or evidence of abuse. They veil their prejudice under the guise of "discretionary power" and then refuse to act fairly, or provide reason for their decisions --by telling you that they don't have to tell you. These people are mad in every sense of the word. Look at their reviews. There's no wonder why the People dislike this courthouse. It has incompetent officers. Rule against the people as they may, but if they were fair and explanative, the people would be understanding and learn from their alleged mistakes, but the officers of this court are so incompetent and disgusted of their own employment that they even refuse to be fair as it would require a few cells more in mental energy. We don't care if the ruling is against us so long as it's fair, our argument is that the rulings are NOT fair, but purported to be and nobody provides any reason for us to gauge the fairness. If you broke the law according to the law then it must be clearly demonstrated by the court, but not in this court, go elsewhere. California is large, fly up north if you want real justice, don't have the matter heard in satanic and egotistic Los Angeles county. This building is dated and difficult to navigate. I had a hard time finding anyone to help direct me to the court room I needed to be in as paperwork does not say what floor is located on. Parking in the adjacent lot was okay but as I exited I had to walk over an encampment and human vomit in the staircase. Plenty of other people, attorneys and police are turning a blind eye and stepping over someone's trash and belongings. It's a pretty sad reflection on society. Over the decades, I've heard this court is racist to POC -- I guess this depends on the judge, assuming not all judges are white and colored judges can also be racist towards other POC, etc. Well, I went to see the judge for my toll violation ticket. (D'astero, I think his name is spelled). There was about 8-9 people in court, 3 were hispanic and the rest were Asian. The 3 Hispanic people go first, and I noticed their fines for speeding, driving without a license, driving without insurance were significantly dropped to $25-35. Then 2 Asian people went up before me, and both needed an interpreter (one in Chinese, and one in Korean). The judge was giving them a hard time, shaking his head, being condescending towards them. When it was my turn, I asked for a fee reduction from the $234 I got for my Fastrak ticket. He said, "okay, I'll lower your ticket to $25, BUT CA taxes, your ticket is now $194". WHAT? Since when does a ticket or citation have a tax of nearly 8X?? My Fastrak ticket cost more than the speeding ticket, no insurance ticket, running a red light ticket for the non-Asians before me. Seems unfair. The "punishment" in this case the ticket cost doesn't align with the actual violation. Mean while, my friends that got toll violations in the mail only paid $15 to $25 max. I don't get it. I have the actual Fastrak transponder, and I get charged 8-12X what people that don't even have it get charged when they get cited. ****The black girl with glasses that was at the clerks office right in front of Dept. M court house is the nicest person I've encountered working at the court! We need more people like her working at the courts. People already have a crappy day at the court, but when dealing with someone nice like her, it makes a crappy day a little better. Give her a raise!*** read more

I think one of the best courthouses ever in California. I have had good experience in taking care of traffic tickets here. I guess that's why my review is good because the female judges left me with some slack to take care of unpaid tickets, and given me extensions to do so. There is no self-help offered at this courthouse. The clerks often make mistakes, such as not filing paperwork, and when e-filing clerks are incredibly picky and provide unclear explanations for rejection of documents. If you decide to go to court in-person to file paperwork, expect long wait times. The judge for small claims does not allow any type of service for documents besides personal service, despite other options being available if service is difficult because parties are intentionally dodging service. Judge dismisses cases, requiring you to re-file, even if you ask for an extension ahead of time. read more

Brought in so much evidence of doing a job I performed and Dodson came in for 5 minutes and finished the entire sentencing within 10 minutes. Didn't look at evidence I worked on for months. As only a county employee CAN sound. I have spoken to several people who claim they ignore the jury summons they receive and nothing ever comes of it. Just a few heads up (from experience) if you want to minimize frustration: * Do not bring your vape. They will ask you to put it back in your car. Keys and wallets are fine. * You're better off coming at 8:00am on the dot for any self service stuff (eg filing for orders). You come an hour before they close, they will tell you to come early the next day because they have to process a queue of other applicants. * Expect to wait even if you manage to come early, so don't have anything planned. * No one's going to be overly friendly. The workers probably get asked the same questions everyday. So come prepared to be given attitude. read more

I had a fix-it ticket and got my vehicle repaired and paid my fees, only for Pasadena Superior Court to leave my citation open, tell me that I either find a receipt from a while ago, or pay $193 extra (the fee was $25) to remedy their mishandling and improper conduct when it came to money. Made an appointment to file in small claims dept. Arrived on time to stand near window 3 while the teller was assisting someone on the phone. Teller One has nobody but tells me to wait for teller in window 3 even though his window is open. After waiting about 15 minutes, someone comes in after me and walks up to window One teller who calls in Ross to assist the gentleman who walked in after me. Why? - We were both there for the same reason and I was there first- Teller One (Bald guy) why did you not call Ross out to assist me while your co-worker was on the phone? Meanwhile teller from window 3 is still on the phone & signals me toward his window then tries to assist me while at the same time that he is speaking on the phone. There was no point in making an appt. You wont get service at the time of your appointment even if you are the only one standing in front of the windows. Incredibly rude and unhelpful employees at the clerk counter. One man seemed like he had no idea where he was and had AirPods on (left most counter on 5/23/22 around 10am). Asked for help and always got an I don't know. Another lady was SO mean and condescending. THIS lady needs to be fired. (Left most counter on 5/23/22 around 10am). My rating is solely based on my experience attending night court on Monday 7/1/19. I was cited for a speeding ticket with a hefty $490.00 fine. My speed was not 25 miles over the limit and yet the officer checked off the non correctional box. And was told by the judge to wear actual clothes to court. Like huh?! I had a t shirt n pants on. Not a low cut shirt either. I was on my way to the gym afterwards to work on my health, fitness and confidence. And now a judge who body shames for the clothes u wear that don't meet her standards? Pasadena courthouse is small, easy parking, easy access to cafeteria, fast and easy to pay parking tickets or any other tickets. BTW, cops here are pretty nice and chili and it is also because it's not Los Angeles courthouse. Jury duty 5th floor Cafeteria is 3rd floor Bring your phone charger if you have jury duty because that shit it boring as hell. You can bring your laptop or tablet and plug in to charge and use their tables if needed. Walking distance from Old town Pasadena. Lots of great places to eat and shop on your lunch break. TIP: Potential Jurors, READ and fill your paperwork BEFORE you get here. So many people showed up asking dumb questions, all of which could have been answered if they read the summons. Your dumb questions hold up the process. They do NOT validate. You are supposed to park in the FREE structure. They do NOT excuse you for financial hardship. this is the most rundown courthouse in la county, and i'm even including long beach when i say this. there is no public access to the stairwell, and there are only 3 elevators. usually only 2 are running. the elevator buttons don't light up, so you never know if you're going up or down or to which floor. it's always a surprise. the courtrooms haven't been updated since around the 1940's, and neither have the judges. just kidding. coffee? don't look for a snack shop or cafeteria. it's been closed since '08. across the street, you can find espress yourself inside the pasadena library. walk a few blocks in the opposite direction on garfield toward colorado and you'll find europane and starbucks. all within 7-10 minutes. food at the paseo and in old town. contrary to popular belief, pasadena does *not have good food. it's just a relatively clean town with nice shops and uppity restaurants with mediocre chefs. if this sounds depressing, it is. but please, remain in good spirits - jury duty is one of the most important jobs of all. read more

This review is for Jury Duty only. This was my first time serving in Pasadena and I was actually excited for three reasons: 1. It was closer to home (I usually get sent DTLA), 2. Lots of yummy eateries, especially, with the Paseo Colorado literally down the street, and 3. My new employer pays for unlimited days of jury duty service, and so I'm not having to worry about using vacation hours or not getting paid for the amount of service should the case takes longer. Parking: Parking structure located behind the Pasadena Work Permit Building on the corner of Ramona and Marengo. You'll enter from Ramona and will receive a jury parking pass. Place it on your dashboard and park on the 3rd level. Afterwards, it's just a brisk 5min walk to the courthouse. The courthouse is located adjacent to the Pasadena Library and Express Yourself Coffee Bar. It is a huge, old brown building on the corner of Garfield and Walnut. The procedures done here are simple and easy, unlike DTLA where it is rather chaotic. After I went through security, here's what I experienced and a few tips in between: 1. 5th Floor to the Jury Assembly Room 511 and wait outside until they are ready to start. 2. Staff: The security guards at the metal detectors are decent and professional. Our Lead Employee for the Jury Assembly Room that day was Lisa. She was very nice, patient and directions given by her were crystal clear. 3. Before they let you in, you'll form two lines and get a small questionnaire to fill out. 4. You can sit wherever you want in the Jury Assembly Room. I ended sitting at a computer with internet access, yes! The room is nicely ventilated. A bit chilly, but good since it keeps you awake and sipping a hot cup of coffee is nice in there. Side Note: There's five computer stations available with internet access. I was fortunate that the people in the Jury Assembly Room with me were either on their own phones, watching the news or playing on their own laptop. Also, the only outlets available are the ones underneath the computers. 5. The Lead Employee in charge that day will go over the Jury Summons with you and you'll turn it in afterwards. They will then ask if you need to be excused or reschedule for another date or transferred to another courthouse and to see them at the Clerk's Window regarding it. 6. Once you're inside the Jury Assembly Room, they will have the news on. There's no orientation on TV. You're free to do whatever you want in there as long as it's quiet and not disruptive. They even have assorted books and puzzles available too. 7. Food and Drinks inside the Courthouse: Café is located on the 3rd Floor, and there are vending machines on the 1st Floor. 8. Lunch Time: You get 2 hours, yay! (Usually, lunch is 1.5 hours in DTLA). However, the inside joke amongst jurors is that since the here elevators are super so slow in coming up and down, that's why you probably get that extra 30 mins, lol! 9. If you're not picked for a case or if the case you're assigned to has settled, then you're free! You turn in your badge and get a green slip signifying that you have completed your jury duty service. 10. Restrooms: They're clean, but old and worn down. However, they're still functional. Overall, I had a pleasant time here. It wasn't as boring and/or painful as I had anticipated. read more

I beat my ticket but this place still sucks. But it deserves an updated rating because of Judge/Commish Mary Byrne she's pretty funny, both times I've seen her on the bench, she made being in court a bit more bearable (as long as you're not on the receiving end of her judgement). + one star because face it, its traffic court..... still sucks. Fighting a traffic ticket in court is a pretty interesting experience. Watching people give their defense is hilarious. Especially the people that went through all the trouble of getting an arraignment, a court date and then go up to the stand and bascially plead guilty and pay the fine....... why not just pay the fine in the first place and skip all this? Some dumb mofos out there. read more

Coming to court is never a pleasant experience, but this court is definitely more organized then others and has an outdoor window(2 stars). However, they waste a lot of time prior to starting court 9:15, you must be here by 8:20 to make roll call, their seats don't have arm rests, it's super cold, and the window people are extremely slow!!! Unfortunately, my fiance has had to come here a couple occasions and it always wastes a good portion of his day and $10 on parking. The state should come up with a better process, but then again they need people's hard earned money to line their own pockets. read more
