This was my first time in a federal courthouse and thank goodness as witness…read more I've been to state courthouses in various counties throughout California and this Federal Courthouse is so much more professional, clean, well kept, and modern in design. I was amazed by the minimalist design and open spaces. It didn't feel stuffy and congested. It reminded me of the lobby of an expensive hotel. The big windows let tons of sunlight in and the center of the building is an open space all the way to the ceiling. There are law enforcement personnel at the entrance and exit...and they are very friendly and helpful. Their cafeteria has a very good selection of food. I was impressed. If you ever visit here, hopefully not as a defendant, you will be surprised Be prepared to take off your shoes and remove all metal, similar to an airport, when entering this building.

I've been an active member of the LA County arboretum for years and FINALLY got to explore the…read moreinterior of the Queen Anne cottage this holiday season (2025)! The inside is as beautiful as the outside and full of local history. The guides were thoroughly knowledgeable and enthusiastic in discussing the details as we meandered through the cottage - and I especially loved that they were dressed in Victorian era clothing! Elias Jackson Baldwin (aka Lucky Baldwin) was a very prominent figure in this area in the late 1800s. He owned over 13,000 acres here - land that included the present day cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Pasadena and San Marino. I always enjoy hearing about history involving Lucky Baldwin because he still technically has an easement on our property and his name is on the title to our house haha! He built this cottage and coach barn in the late 1870s for his 4th wife but apparently they split up not long after they were married so he turned it into a memorial for his 3rd wife who had passed away (drama drama lol). It was then used as a guest house for visitors to the ranch. The cottage is quite opulent with ornate fireplaces, ceilings, and chandeliers, as well as some of the most intricate and colorful stained glass window pieces I've ever seen! I absolutely loved them! They are all original to the house - as well as all the beautiful tile accents in the floors and around the fireplaces. There's some original redwood paneling in the bathroom that you'll also find in the coach barn which is gorgeous and in excellent condition. Unfortunately, Baldwin's daughter who inherited the house after his passing, threw out all their furniture and belongings. So all the other items you see are not original to the house - but are still period appropriate antiques belonging to the era. I believe they do suggest children not do the tour as there are many fragile items in cramped spaces so be aware. The tours are pretty brief as you can only explore the downstairs rooms and there aren't that many - the receiving room/entryway, the music/entertainment room, a small hallway room, a bedroom, bathroom, and the library with butlers pantry. But still definitely worth a visit! The stained glass windows in the library have portraits of Shakespeare and Lord Byron in the glass - those alone are worth going on the tour if you ask me! Several movies and TV shows have been filmed in parts of the cottage as well (of course) - such as Fantasy Island (from the 70s) and even an episode of American Horror Story! The coach barn is always open during garden open hours, but the cottage has been closed as long as I've been visiting (over 5 years now). So when I saw the member email saying they were offering tours, I jumped on it lol! The tours aren't available very often from what I read. So far, they've only offered the tours on weekends during the holiday season starting in November this year and it looks like they are sold out online for the rest of the season. But when I visited, they were offering tickets for tours on site so you may still be able to tour. There are staff in a blue tent outside the cottage to ask when you arrive. Online tickets do include entry into the garden as well, which is worth exploring in its own right - would make for a great day out! If you're at all into Victorian era architecture and culture and the local history, I'd suggest signing up for the arboretum newsletter and keep an eye out for when they offer tours of the cottage.

I have been a member of the LA Arboretum in Arcadia for several years now. There is so much to see…read moreat this garden. I'm sure I haven't seen every cranny of this place as of yet LOL. Never once did I checked out the Queen Anne Cottage, Coach Barn, and Adobe until most recently. The cottage, barn, and adobe are located along side and/or around Baldwin Lake. Cottage was not open for tours at the time so I wasn't able to go inside. I admired its beauty from the outside and walked around its serene and calming perimeter. I did take a peek inside through its windows and snapped a few photos. Funny, I was actually hesitant to take photos of its inside... wasn't sure if an alarm was going to sound off LOL. Whew, no alarm! One thing I found peculiar is how small the bed is. It's not even the size of a full size bed... I think it's in between a twin and full size IMHO. Anyway, I read the cottage didn't even have a kitchen so the meals were prepared at the adobe. I walked around the abode, but didn't peek inside for some reason. I may have the courage to do so next time LOL. I also got a chance to walk inside and through the coach barn. Saw some displays of antique carriage and stuff. There were a few horse stalls. I didn't walk towards them for some reason. I guess the energy didn't call for it at the moment. Maybe I will next time. Be brave Linh! LOL Definitely, a lot of history surrounding the cottage, coach barn, and adobe. If you haven't been at the LA Arboretum or have been and just haven't seen the cottage, barn, and adobe, it's time to make it happen! I was born and raised in LA, living the majority of my life in the concrete jungle of Koreatown. I…read morenever even heard of La Crescenta until I met my wife who was raised here and also in La Canada. Simply put, this city is awesome! It's a fantastic city to raise your family in primarily due to the "small town feel," great parks, safety and the excellent school district. There's also a lot of green trees and nature....something that took a little bit of time for me to adjust to coming from k-town. For an LA suburb, the people are friendly for the most part ( it's not Mayberry folks ) and the food options are decent. If you're looking for some family activities, it's a quick drive or walk to the city of Montrose which has a lot of great restaurants, shops and a cool historic bowling alley from the 50's. They also have a farmers market there every Sunday. The reason why I won't give this city a 5 star is because the diversity doesn't go very deep around here unless you're Caucasian, Asian or Persian. I think this may be due to the ridiculously high home pricing. For your average home built in 1970 with 1200 sq ft, you're looking at minimum of 600-700k. This doesn't include rehab costs which a lot of these homes need. Not many people, especially those trying to raise a family, can afford to even live here. Overall, I can't see us living in any other place in LA. This is HOME! Cheers!

There are 45 Mid-Century Modern homes in the neighborhood, built from 1935-1968, designed by Neutra, Ennis, Kenneth Nishimoto, Harwell Hamilton Harris, etc. There are other home styles in this area, including California Ranch, Spanish, etc. Each home is unique. Start on La Loma at Poppy Peak Dr. and walk up Poppy Peak Dr. Enjoy the winding streets but be careful because there are no sidewalks and visibility is limited at times because of the hairpin turns. It's not too steep. Take in the views of the San Gabriel Mountains. Admire the majestic trees. Part of the charm of the homes is the way that they're built into the hillside. Many homes are multi-level with large windows and low rooflines. Most of the homes are well-maintained and have lovely landscaping too. Towards the top, Poppy Peak Rd. circles around and back to the lower part of Poppy Peak Dr. It's easy to find parking in the neighborhood. Also, you may want to check out the Secret Stairs near there if you're in the area (they are listed on Yelp).

We parked and walked through the park and learned about the history of the place. It's all dated back to 1847. There was a huge oak tree planted here which died in 1987 and was cut down. The Oak of Peace played an important role in the history of California. it's a historic spot to be at it feels very serene here beautiful trees and plants all around picnic tables and restrooms available I also learned that you can rent it out and do private parties here. How nice would that be, specially kids birthday parties where they can be in nature, explore and run around. Very lovely find.

I definitely got my steps in but there's a Dash bus available if you don't want to walk. I'm told it's a historical court house. The bathroom still had their old fixtures, however, the sinks had modern sensored faucets. The cafe on the basement level was expensive. $10 bucks for a dinky sandwich and a bottle of water. On day two, I walked to grab dim sum in Chinatown not too far away. It was definitely better than a dinky sandwich.

So you'll have to show photo ID and then put all your cables and electronic device on the tray to go through x-ray. This include laptops and iPad so they can't stay in your bag or backpack. You don't have to take off your shoes so that's a good thing. Getting mobile reception here is horrible so just be aware. I have Tmobile and is assigned to the 2nd level, there certain spots where you'll get signal but if just barely take a step, you can lose your signal. In the courtroom, you'll have to use a microphone so it can transmit through the speaker and people can hear you. The bathroom layout here is also bad because the women bathroom and men bathroom are across the hall from each other. There also no cafeteria here either so you'll have to go across the street to Los Angeles Mall or another food place.
