I have reviewed Parrot Coffee Grocery in 2014 and today I am still of the opinion that it is a great place. There have been changes in the selections on the shelves but not in the quality and the service is still very good, prices are reasonable. I have recommended Parrot to so many people over the years that I lost count and I am happy to let newcomers to the neighborhood now. They have a lot of unique products for a place in Glendale. They have plenty of halva to choose from, including their own homemade version they make from sunflower seeds. They gave me a piece to try and it was delicious. Keep in mind that you have to buy a minimum of half a pound when you order their halva. They also have a ton of desserts. I had to try their baklava and kataifi. Both were definitely winners but I would only get the baklava again. For savory items, they have a refillable olive oil station as well as an olive/pickled veggies bar. I tried their spinach and feta pie. I would get it again but not right away since I want to try their other options. The rather small store packs a great variety of European jams, grains, sauces, snacks, and juices-all at really reasonable prices. I was shocked to see the amount of dried herbs they have in stock too (such as nettle, st. john's wort, uva ursi) The workers were also really nice and helpful whenever my American self had a question about what something was. read more

Great little Romanian store with a huge selection of Eastern European products from foods to detergents and deodorants. Definitely better than all other similar stores that I found in NYC. Unfortunately I can't give it more than 3 stars since I have to check each product that I put in my cart for the expiration date. Extremely happy and satisfied with this business! For those who are not familiar with this grocery store , they are mostly cater ethnic foods for Balkans and Eastern Europeans. Some foods that you're missing being an expat. Imagine that I live in CA and no one around here sells a whole head of pickled cabbage,the most important ingredient to make the ancient stuffed cabbage rolls!!! I don't blame them , who have heard of cabbage rolls in CA? They have tons of other delicious food. Well you can adapt and do it with raw cabbage but the result will suffer in flavor and taste. It supposed to taste sour not sweet . Anyway, long story short ... I've found this business online (thank God they had a website) and I ordered some of my favorite foods and treats , coffee and spices , even the most wanted pickled cabbage. The most amazing thing wasn't the order itself or finding the place! It was the customer service!! The owner (sorry I didn't get his name) went above and beyond to assist me and accommodate the shipping and timing so I can have this order in time for Christmas. My friend, who is Bulgarian, took me to this place a couple of times since he frequently buys his groceries here. Here you can find so many exotic and bizarre Eastern European food items that is not commonly see. In the market, they have a lot of dry goods, cheese, smoked meats, handmade food and an entire olive bar. I myself don't buy east European goods much, but I'm always curious in exotic foods I've never had before. I was really thrilled when I discovered that Parrot coffee has homemade Turkish delight since I've been looking for those that are factory produced in a lot of New York candy shops, a large box of it didn't cost much, they are mouthwatering and finely cut. My friend also recommended me a Bulgarian sheep cheese that has the texture of Brie and a similar taste to cheddar cheese, I realized it's pretty good for charcuterie boards. I've seen some reviews that mentioned Parrot Coffee selling goods beyond expiration date, I haven't encountered any at the moment. read more

Do you like cheese? I don't care how you answered that question, you need to go to Parrot Coffee Grocery (aka the cheese store) and get some creamy bulvarian feta. Congratulations, I just gave you a reason to continue with life. These cheeses are unreal. Also unreal: their GOAT yogurt. I capitalized GOAT because this the greatest of all time yogurt that, coincidentally, is made with goat's milk. So rich and creamy. My personal chef aka boyfriend made me tzatziki with it, and it was the best tzaziki of my life. I also bought turkish pistachios here, delicious. Olives, delicious. So many eastern european/middle eastern foods that allow me to embrace my inner Jewess. I have a tip for the owners: rename yourselves "Feta", market to the hipsters, and lay back and enjoy selling your delicious cheese all day long. So worth the trek. read more

Awful. This business sells expired, rotten groceries (fresh, dried, and frozen!) and some of the staff who work behind the counter are miserable monsters. Not COVID-19 sanitary (no PPE on staff, store is visibly dirty). I used to enjoy coming here for their one redeeming quality: great feta cheese (and just alright coffee beans), but I'm no longer supporting a business who sells dangerous groceries and treats all non-Balkan customers like garbage. read more

My go-to grocery for ethnic fare. Parrot Coffee Grocery is a shop that sells Middle Eastern and European products. The refrigerated sections sells goods such as smoked fish, sausages, dairy based spreads, drinks, and ready to bake goods suck as burek, filo dough, falafel, pierogis, etc. They also sell candies, canned foods, seasonings, sauces, spreads, junk food, cookies, sodas, and other standard grocery fair, but all are imported internationally. The grocery offers fresh food options as well such as olives, cheeses, and coffee beans. They also sell baked goods such as baklava, kanafeh, cheese and spinach pastries, etc. The baklava wasn't the best I've had, but it was pretty good. I really wish they offered pistachio baklava though. read more

They have all of my favorite foods and ingredients from home! If it wasn't for that place I would have to go grocery shopping all the way to Astoria. Prices of different items vary, some things are cheaper than in my home country, some things are cheaper than I can find them in other supermarkets here and there's things that are more expensive. In general if something is a little more expensive than in other places, it's still worth it because of the convenience of having it locally, without having to travel to Astoria. I especially like the good selection of Lyutenitza and Eggplant salad. They even have homemade sour cabbage and eggplant dip. Last time I went there was around Christmas and it looked like they had even more stuff in stock than usual. If it wasn't for them I would have had to do a lot more cooking but I was able to buy most of the appetizers I served from Parrot. read more

I recommend their feta (I'm partial to the super creamy French variety), their spinach+feta hand pies (good for breakfast, $3), their dumpling chicken soup ($3), their olive bar, and their coffee by the pound which can be ground to order. Great to have in the neighborhood. There are tons of other interesting imports in canned goods and frozen, plus lots of sausage/ham/meat options which I have not explored. There's a ton packed into this tiny store. I agree that service isn't the friendliest here, but I've never been treated outright badly. Contrary to what the person who reviewed this establishment on 1/21/14 wrote, Parrot Coffee Grocery actually does sell coffee... in packages... unopened... for the customer to buy... and take home... and open... and make... into hot coffee... using some sort of coffee maker. God knows I love a specialty grocery store and Parrot is no exception!This place has quite an array for such a small square footage. Greek Feta (A+), Taramosalata, Hungarian sweet paprika, and stuffed green olives garnered lots of attention at our Christmas Eve feast. I also stocked up on a huge bag of roasted hazlenuts and raw pumpkin seeds for the very affordable price of $6 each. I went to visit my friend in her new apartment, a few blocks from Parrot, and she fed me some delicious Bulgarian feta cheese, she got a giant block for 3$. It was the best feta I've ever had. I went to visit her again today, and she took me to Parrot. We got some Romanian feta and jarred smoked sardines in oil. We spent 7$ on the lot. The Romanian feta was even better than the Bulgarian. So creamy (and crumbly) and sharply yet delicately flavored. Went perfectly with the sardines, which were very rich and smoky. I look forward to working my way through all their cheeses. read more

So much variety and interestingness for such a small store! Try the spanakopita at the prepared foods counter - $3 a slice and filling enough for a light dinner. Or bread dipped in their homemade zacusca. I love their house coffee blend, too. And they carry the world's best soda, Schweppes Bitter Lemon. It's imported from Turkey, I think. So good and can be cut with half seltzer or mixed with vodka or tequila! Oh and Lion bars are the best candy bars ever. And organic Bulgarian yogurt. And pickled baby beets. This place deserves all the respect it gets. They pack an amazing amount of interesting items into a relatively small space. I'm a big fan of smoked fish and appreciate being able to buy items like whole smoked mackerel and herring for reasonable prices. The cheese counter is amazing as are the deli meats and prepared foods. The service is typically eastern European - sometimes friendly, sometimes frosty, sometimes just bizarre. Bottom line, this place make Ridgewood a LOT more livable when it comes to food. read more

A small but well stocked ethnic grocery store in Ridgewood. It's full of goodies from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as some items from the Middle East. The deli counter in the back offers lots of regional cheeses and meats, and the aisles, if you can even call them that, are fully stocked with various jars of pickles, bags of coffee, and candies. The freezers also carry various types of pierogies and bureks. Service can be a bit curt, but the selection is quite good and the prices are fair, especially when you consider that most of the goods here are imported. read more

Not expensive, but they get knocked back a few stars cause some of their items were expired. Astoria is still kinda better with European groceries than Ridgewood. I feel so lucky to live a two-minute walk from Parrot. The cheese is great and super reasonable and they've got a decent selection of olives. There's a nice selection of Greek and Eastern European delicacies and sweets, and even fresh bread that appears to be delivered daily. A gem of Ridgewood. read more

Fantastic, fresh prepared food and a fairly wide selection of different cheeses, salamis, sausages etc. Their mici are phenomenal! The staff is always ready with suggestions, just don't be rude. Especially if they are really busy. They'll go out of their way to help you but they are most definitely not like their american counterparts- if you act like an ass you will get treated as such. I travel there from Brooklyn for fluffy pita bread, ajvar, cheeses, sausages ...I try to get something new every time I go -it's not the only place I know of to get Romanian and Yugoslav foods, but they have a better selection than some of the smaller stores and it saves searching around. Best authentic Romanian food around. Hard to find a place that makes food the way grandma makes it to take home with you. Everyone who works here is super friendly and my family and I have been relying on them for traditional holiday food since we moved to Ridgewood. I like this place because it offers products that are difficult to find elsewhere. However, I have to say, the people and clientele definitely aren't the friendliest. The cashier routinely lets her regular customers cut in front of me in line, and no one is ever nice. However, they do have good olives and avjar (spelling?)
