Don Julio Mexican Restaurant - Birria tacos

This place was phenomenal! A true cultural gem located in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. It is hard to…read morefind such bold and authentic flavors in this area. I was greeted by warm and welcoming customer service and seated promptly. The ambiance is very cool, imagine diner style. I ordered the birria tacos, and they were beyond delicious! From the tasty broth filled with flavor, to the authentic and delicious salsa with a nice spice kick! I ordered four tacos total! I ate every single taco down to the last bite too! This place was absolutely phenomenal! From the customer service, to the flavors, and so much more! I will be stopping by again in the future.

I am so glad this is my first review for 2025. We are so lucky to have this gem in Lewistown. I…read morewill openly admit, I am a taco snob from the west who grew up with Latina girlfriends and homemade tamales either given or purchased in a Walmart parking lot from a kind auntie. IYKYK. There are only 4 taco places I would eat In Pennsylvania period and one them was featured on Netflix. This made it to top 3. In a place where diversity and authentic flavors are unfamiliar and unknown, we finally have Don Julio for the world to see here! I knew when I tasted that Horchata, we were in business along with the Masa flour bags of course. We also get carnitas as a test everywhere and do you see that slight crisp on that soft carnitas (aka it's pulled pork for those unfamiliar but better)?! You had me there because that's the only way to eat carnitas. We are slowly going through the menu but I recommend this place for wonderful service and real Mexican food (no not the 1000 chains in Harrisburg or state college). Stop by on your way to a Penn state game or visiting state college to beat the crowds and get real food! Yes you have Taco Bell and your typical fast casual chipotle when you're in a pinch. But support local and they do quick take out as well! Now enough compliments here are the stats 20/10 - the food take out or not has wonderful flavor and is authentic. Come here if you want real Mexican food. It's all made from scratch and is reasonably priced for the amount of food and meat you get per bite. Price and value per bite friends in this economy? Wowza. They start you out with chips and salsa and salsa tastes way better than what you usually get in other places but resist the urge to fill up on chips if you can.. What to do: Carnitas - obviously? Not spicy Birria tacos is basically beef that's been braised in that little soup they give with tons of flavor that then make baby quesadillas with. Not spicy - that's what the hot sauce is for. Chorizo tacos - think spiced ground pork that has real flavor. It can be considered spicy to some palettes. I would ask for more hot sauce or to try different sauces. Ps I will add more comments and pictures as we go through their menu. 10/10 - service, we had a very attentive waitress and my only comment is we need to find a better way to ease people who have never tried real Mexican food. I can see locals feeling overwhelmed and struggling to make choices since their basis of comparison are the two places above sadly. Ambiance is like family restaurant vibes. You're here to eat and talk! This is not a dimly lit not enough to eat vibe. You'll leave full and joyous. Things you may struggle but don't hold it against them: parking. The parking is shared with the local beer store so it can get tight. Just park at Lowe's if you're desperate. Or take out? No alcohol for those who care or need. If they get their liquor or beer and wine license, I can see even more people coming! Winning combo. They take card and cash. And for those local - it's in the same place as the sticky bun diner. And you will need to come on in on the side. Lastly if they offer Italian don't be phased and try it. The owner cooked Italian food for the longest time in the area so it'll be fire.

There were so many wonderful flavors: rose sugar in the opening snack, smoked mussels and saffron foam in the soup, homemade ricotta in the carrot pasta, spruce sorbet palette cleanser,, an incredible steak, rhubarb ice cream. Wow! Super unique. Service was friendly and professional. The dining room is small and the ceiling is a bit low, so the noise level is pretty high when the room is full. We were across from a table of 6 and one gentleman did not know how to use an inside voice, so we had to lean in to talk over this loud talker. But that's not the restaurant's fault. I think the price is really a bargain for what you will experience. Bring a nice bottle of wine and enjoy! We're already looking for reservations later this summer! Fantastic!

A side stop between State College and Harrisburg. We went with friends and brought a few bottles of wine (byow-no cork fee). We were the last seating of the night at 7:45 PM. This is a fixed price, fixed menu, 5-course meal, with a surprise 6th appetizer, all with a "Fall" theme as we visited in September. This is a farm-to-table restaurant with many items coming from their garden. I wouldn't say the menu options were my favorite but the presentation was excellent. Everything was delicious, service was great and it was a beautiful evening with friends. We were there past 10 PM as the restaurant came to a close. I'm glad places like this exist outside of the typical urban setting - thank you!

The Sunday brunch menu had something for everyone. My mother in law and I had the crab cake Bennie's with homefries which were fresh and well-portioned. My husband had the breakfast burger and it was fresh and well-portioned too. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The service is average, so I would expect to sit here and relax awhile if you plan to visit. Overall it was a great experience and I would come back again in a heartbeat.

There weren't many people there but for the groups present everyone was smiling and happy. Our server Maggie was beyond phenomenal. She was excited to serve, attentive to our needs while also giving us space to truly enjoy our meal. Between the delicious food, and let me tell you... those rosemary fries EVERY! THING! they weren't greasy, that had a good crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. I didn't experience one over or under done fry. The crab was plentiful. Not a bunch of fillers. We really enjoyed our experience and plan to make it our new stop when we travel out to PA moving forward. They had a sign with evening activities as well. Seems like the place to be at night. Oh yeah... for the wine drinkers... you're going to want to head here and sip. I had the amazing resiling and it did not disappoint. Semi dry, lightly sweet... yum.
