My wife and I were gifted a snow shoe tour during a visit for Christmas week. I have to say as a sea level resident I was a bit concerned about the elevation but our guide Cara was patient and made sure we were not over exerted. Two hikes to two different water falls, Cara pointed out nature highlights always making the information accessible and understandable. Have used the guides at the Parks' Fly Shop twice and can't wait to go back next year. My family had the best experience and the guides were fantastic. They asked what my expectations were for the trip & followed thru w/ providing what we wanted. I have two girls that love to fish and my main goal was for the kids catch fish & have a great time. My husband and I also wanted to catch something but we wanted to enjoy the scenery and take some photos too. We all caught fish, had a great hike, learned some new fishing skills, and even saw a grizzly bear! Can't say enough good things! I love the fact they were able to cater to our needs for the trip. I've been fly fishing for over 30 years, so I've been in a lot of fly shops. This place is a bit of a throw back and I really like it. It's one part outdoor/hardware store and one part fly shop. You probably won't find those fancy $700 waders or racks of expensive tech clothing here. What will will find is a basic selection of quality gear, sage advise and truly great flies. You can probably also pick up a garden hose or Buck knife while you're at it. Their flies are truly second to none. Worth the trip every time. Visited this shop several times on a recent trip to Yellowstone and also took a full- day float trip on the Yellowstone with their head guide and an associate. They are competent and know Yellowstone area fishing. We had a tough day to start on the float trip but the guides found an answer and we finished strong. Only negative is the curmudgeonly harshness from the owner and his head guide, but they're tolerable for a few days and it's much better than fake charm. read more

I can't say enough good things about Park's Fly Shop. I live in California and wanted to book a float trip on the Yellowstone in September. I googled around on the web for a while and found the Park's website (http://www.parksflyshop.com). It is outstanding, providing an enormous amount of information. Even my wife commented on how much content was there. So, I called them. They were very helpful, suggesting a "combo trip:" 1/2 day walk-wading in the Park for Fall browns running up from the Yellowstone to spawn and 1/2 day floating the Yellowstone. I booked the trip for myself, my wife, and my two sons and paid my deposit. About a month before the trip, Montana wildlife officials announced that the Yellowstone River had been closed due to a liver parasite outbreak. I called Park's to discuss our options. Once again they were most helpful. Richard, the proprietor said that we could still do the walk-wade and, if I wanted to cancel the trip altogether, they would return my full deposit. I said we would stick with the walk-wade and do the float if the river opened back up. We arrived the day before our scheduled trip and dropped by the Park's store. Very modest place. Not all the commercial crap that other fly shops (think The Fly Shop in Redding, CA) try to sell you at inflated prices. They fitted my wife and sons out with serviceable boots and waders. They also informed us that, although the Yellowstone had been opened back up, there was no way we could do the float part of the trip because it had rained for several days and the river was just too muddy, so we would just have to walk-wade for a half-day. I was very disappointed, but appreciated their honesty; other outfitters would have gladly taken my money for the full day and floated me down the Yellowstone with no hope of catching any fish. The next morning we headed out with our two guides, Walt Wiese and Ben Jewell. They were very congenial and knew exactly where and how to fish the river. They gave us lots of good instruction and casting tips and described the various kinds of browns we were catching (residents vs runners). It ended up being a spectacular day, one of the best days fishing we have ever had. I have to add a few words about Walt, who was the guide that I fished with. Walt is a real renaissance man. He was the person who did such a spectacular job putting together all the information on Park's website. He has also published a book, Fly Fishing Yellowstone Country (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TRTO8M6 , a bargain in the Kindle edition at $2.99), which includes all the information from the website in addition to more details on each of the rivers and hatches in the area and the various techniques and flies to use for the different seasons. In addition to his skills as a web designer and author, Walt is an outstanding fisherman and guide. He can be blunt at times, but I always prefer that in a guide (I would rather have him tell me what I am doing wrong and try to correct it rather than allow me to keep on doing the wrong thing all day long). As you would expect from his book, he has intimate knowledge of how to fish everywhere in Yellowstone Country. And he is a maestro with a fly line, showing me just how to cast in order to catch the most fish. We definitely plan on doing business with Park's Fly Shop again on future trips to Montana and Yellowstone, and look forward to fishing with Walt and Ben again. read more

My partner and I hired Rob Olson from Park's Fly Shop as a guide for 2 full days of fly fishing on 7/8/18 & 7/9/18. We are both avid fisherman on spinning/conventional reels but very much a novice when it comes to fly fishing. Richard and Walt did a great job answering all of our questions when organizing our trip. Rob did an excellent job connecting, coordinating, and communicating all details the day prior to our scheduled trip. He even accommodated a vegan lunch request. Our first day was a walk and wade adventure through Yellowstone park. We started on a small creek fishing for wild brookies to get comfortable with the rod and fish. Within a few hours, Rob had as hammering monster cutthroats while surrounded by bison, elk, bald eagles, coyotes, mule deer, magpies, and prairie dogs. The next day was a float trip down the Yellowstone River in Gardiner. We hit the grand slam by catching cutthroat, brown, rainbow, and whitefish. Fishing was consistently awesome all day long. Once again, we shared the experience with a ton of wildlife including osprey, bald eagles, and river otters! Rob brings 18+ years of experience. He is knowledgeable, patient, enthusiastic, accommodating, and a great teacher. He gave us the confidence and knowledge to catch trout as we hiked in the backcountry of Yellowstone the following 5 days. I highly highly recommend you to hire Rob Olson from Park's Fly Shop. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the store leaves a little to be desired. While the staff and guide service is top notch, the storefront is limited in inventory if you are looking to make a serious purchase. read more

I had a terrible experience here. My wife and I signed up for and paid for a guided fly fishing trip. This was something we thought we would like to try with intentions of pursuing as a hobby. Instead we had a brief lesson on casting on an empty lot. We drove into Yellowstone National Park to go on our fishing trip. We were not told we had to wear special boots and then had a strenuous hike to the fishing area. By the time we got to the stream my legs were worn out. I could not wade in the stream walking on slippery rocks with boots that did not fit. Wally our guide took my wife to the fishing area while I sat on the bank. We had spent the previous 2 months hiking in various national parks, so I was in pretty good shape. I never did get a chance to cast a fishing line let alone catch anything. I learned nothing about fly fishing. I had told the owner when we signed up for this trip my age and that I had bad knees. We had asked if we needed special shoes and we were told no. They should never taken us on such a long strenuous hike to go fishing. They should have given us better instruction. I knew we would not going to be experts when we went on this trip, but I did expect to learn something. Instead all I had was an expensive hike. This is not the place for beginners. read more

The short-ish man at the shop was seemingly knowledgeable but in such a crabby mood. There were only SIX people in the shop and it was totally stressing him out! He actually asked half of them to leave their ID's (for fishing licenses) and instructed the other half of that group to go get their license at the gas station next door. It made me wonder how he handles his job in the summertime. Unfriendly, super short in his answers. Not exactly a chamber of commerce ambassador for the Yellowstone area. He needs to take some happy pills prior to starting his dreaded shift at the fly shop! read more

One star is an overstatement. We work in the park and wanted to pick up a fishing license but were hoping to avoid the crowd so we walked over to parks fly shop. The guy was extremely rude from the beginning. He was just standing behind the counter when we walked in but then rushed us when he realized we were just getting a few licenses. He came off extremely abrasive and even seemed pissed when we pulled out a card to pay the $60, saying under his breath that if we insisted on paying with a card he makes no money off it and would have to charge us for it. While we totally understand paying a service charge when using a card I found it strange that he seemed pissed about it and felt the need to tell us how he makes no money off selling the license. After a day of fishing we wanted to get more flys and you bet we avoided this place at all costs. We will be sure to pass the word on that the employees are extremely rude and not to go there as there are many other small businesses that know how to treat their customers in Gardiner. DO NOT GO HERE.... They are unwelcoming and ruin the whole experience. read more

We were SO excited. Arrived in Gardiner onFriday, Park's had no guides available until Sunday afternoon. Ok, we booked another night at a hotel, and changed our plans. Come Sunday, we arrive at Park's and ask for Walter, whom we were told would be our guide. "I am Walter, and I am NOT your guide," was the response. Ok... He checks, and says Phil will be our guide. He calls Phil, who has no knowledge of this and is not available. Walter says Phil is drunk after supper and not accountable. The mgr is called, Richard, who offers to show up at 1:30. Our start time was 12:30 for a half day. I am relieved that we will still have our adventure, but ask if it will be discounted, as 25% of our time is gone. The response is, 'no guide, here's your cancellation deposit back. See ya.' I was so looking forward to this. I have used 2 other guide sources previously, and would never recommend Park's to anyone. read more
