Petland

Petland

On October 2nd 2021 my husband and I wondered into Petland, never having heard of it (they had a…read moresign that said free puppy hugs). We walked in and there was a wall of puppies different breeds and colors. We see this cute little fluff ball and he had a sign that said "ask me about my special pricing". We get him out, go through all the paper work and get to the warranty part. I am going to be honest - a warranty on a puppy - "yeah ok I'll believe it when I see it." Jokes on me because October 4th I brought the dog to my vet in Austin (where we live) and my cute puppy gets diagnosed with a heart murmur. Oh lord here we go. So I called Petland and spoke with Thomas and Chris about the warranty and what does it all mean. Do I have to drive to Katy and get another puppy immediately? Can I wait till I have this one trained and figure out its medical needs? Thomas and Chris answered my questions, even while shocked that this was happening, because it doesn't. I sent them my papers from the vet with the diagnosis and all the things requested. We were good to go. Fast forward to February 16th, 2022 I call up Katy Petland, speak to Thomas and tell him I'm ready for the new puppy; so can we get the ball rolling. I would like to come in on the 18th and get my warranty dog but for them to be prepared, because I'll be bringing five children with me. We get there, the staff was still kind, even with everything that has happened. Chris even asked about our original puppy and we discussed the children and over all a great experience. Moral of this story is the puppy's have price tags but I'm here to tell you the warranty is actually truthful and they didn't get upset when I cashed in on the new puppy. Thomas is amazing! Chris understands and explains well and non-manager Sarah is a sweetheart.

This review is intended to be helpful to others. While many have positive experiences with Katy…read moreCattery, we have unfortunately not had the same experience. The right thing to do is to warn others so they can be more prepared should they get a kitten from this breeder. Conversations with the owner have taken place and concerns were dismissed. The owner is taking down reviews that are honest, when we want to do our due diligence so others don't end up in a situation like ours: a very sick kitten with pneumonia, as a result of incubation periods related to FHV-1, and thousands spent so far in vet bills. In writing this review we are addressing the dismissive nature of our well-intended communications. We have spoken to another person who got a kitten within the same week from the same litter we did who is confirmed FHV-1. We saw 3 veterinarians in the hospital who say it is highly contagious in young kittens and the incubation period tracks. Perhaps the breeder didn't know, but now that she has been informed she is not handling this with integrity.

This review is for Katy Cattery in Texas. I am writing this review after having time to process…read morewhat occurred and to share my experience as accurately and honestly as possible. From the day I brought my kitten home (approximately three weeks ago), he showed subtle but persistent signs of respiratory issues. He would sneeze intermittently and occasionally wheeze, particularly when I picked him up. He had been described to me as having a "cuddly, calm demeanor," but in hindsight, I now believe this behavior may have been related to not feeling well. When Emily initially described his temperament prior to pickup, I specifically asked whether he might be sick or unwell. During his first week with me, he was very timid and not playful. At the time, I attributed this to a normal adjustment period. About a week ago, he developed an eye infection, and I took him to the veterinarian immediately and informed Emily. At no point during this conversation was I informed of any known or suspected respiratory illness, including Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), in cats from her cattery. I was later informed that eye infections commonly occur alongside respiratory infections in kittens. Shortly after this, his condition escalated rapidly and severely. He developed an extremely high fever, rapid breathing, and significant wheezing. He was taken to an emergency veterinary hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition. He has required continuous IV fluids since admission and has since been formally diagnosed with pneumonia. He remains under intensive veterinary care. This situation has resulted in thousands of dollars in emergency and hospitalization expenses, as well as an extremely stressful and frightening emotional experience. After my original review was posted, I was contacted by another individual who shared that their kitten from the same cattery (born about 15 days before mine) was diagnosed with Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1). This information was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase, nor was it disclosed when I informed Emily of my kitten's eye infection. Additionally, when I asked whether any other cats in her home, including those from his or other litters, had experienced respiratory issues, I was told no. While I cannot state with absolute certainty when or where my kitten became ill, the presence of respiratory symptoms from the day I brought him home, combined with veterinary guidance regarding incubation timelines and learning that another kitten from the same cattery was diagnosed with FHV-1 during the same timeframe, is information I believe prospective buyers deserve to be aware of when considering potential health risks. I also want to note that after posting my original review, I was asked to remove it and was informed that legal action would be pursued if it remained online. As a consumer, this further reinforced the importance of sharing factual, health-related experiences publicly so others can make fully informed decisions. I am sharing this review to accurately reflect my experience and to encourage transparency regarding health issues that may impact new owners and their animals. UPDATE: I want to clarify an important point. I have been in communication with the owner of another kitten from the same litter as mine who was diagnosed with a severe respiratory condition. I have since learned that the breeder was provided with that kitten's medical records prior to my inquiry about whether any other kittens were ill. This information was not shared with me at the time I asked about the health of other kittens.
