So I indulged my husband and we sat at the bar with bartender, Derrik. The chef helped us with our choices. The board with smoke trout was not my favorite, but I'm not a big trout fan. My husband loved it. The parallel salad... I would come here every day for that. Very refreshing. The wine pairing is exactly what you should do on the suggested menu Saffron cavatelli was unique. The flavors are mature and if you've ever been to Italy, you will appreciate this dish. Then we got dessert. We never get dessert. The strawberry shortcake was not a dessert. We're drawn by their crazy happy hour deals: 50% off selected their $45-50 bottles from 4-6pm daily, coming in at around $10/pp for a great time! The Spanish Orange wine we tried was funky and unique. The deal was a safe way to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. For food, the smaller shareables we tried were all delectable. Freshly made and artfully crafted with bold flavor combos. The Smoked Onion Dip was rich and savory. Those housemade chips were so salty and crispy, making them the perfect drinking snacks. The Hush Puppies were another fun item, paired with the slightly sweet and umami Uni Butter to make the most interesting bite in terms of textures and flavors. Having their Donut for dessert was also the way to cap our meal. The sugary exterior broke like glass when we cut through the treat - it's that crispy - revealing velvety pumpkin spiced cream filling that went surprisingly well with the aged gouda grated on top. This is a very Portland wine bar. Depending on where you park you might encounter some sketchy looking folks- not scary but par for Portland right now. Once you enter the restaurant, you are in a classy wine bar with great service. We ordered cocktails and then four dishes with their paired wine. We only wanted one glass per dish and without asking they provided us each a half glass which was much appreciated. The crostino was really fresh and flavorful but we did ask for salt. It made the dish so much better. The watermelon included excellent produce and was well balanced. The raviolo and meatballs were luscious. That said, the ice cream with wine pairing was my favorite. read more

I was extremely excited for the opening of the Parallel wine bar. Previously, the owners ran Park Avenue Wines in downtown Portland. I have missed the comfort, atmosphere and menu since their closing. Parallel has brought back everything I missed including the friendliness and kindness of the staff. Fantastic, affordable wines by the glass (and bottle) with perfect food pairings. On our recent visit we had the onion dip and olives. It was truly a great start to the weekend. Usually hush puppies aren't my favorite thing in the world but these ones you cannot skip. I absolutely love these hush puppies. Additionally the salad was one of the top favorite salads I've had in Portland. I could go back and eat those hush puppies a salad, and a glass of wine, which would make a perfect girl dinner. Impeccable service. The waiter was very informative on the wines and the regions and all the fun little facts that go with wine. A small menu with quality options suggests to me that every item is made with care and my experience lived up to that. What a great experience we had! My girlfriend and I went for Portland Dining Month the other evening and were pleasantly surprised by how superb everything was. The wine selection was good and the food was outstanding. I tried the PDX Dining Month menu with the $25 wine pairing (all delish) and my girlfriend ordered an app and the duck pasta. The hushpuppies were freakin fantastic, especially with the uni honey butter. I would buy a vat of that butter. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout the meal. Highly recommend a visit. We have been to Parallel several times, and I am always impressed. I never even looked at the wine menu. Instead, I describe what I like; they always bring me the perfect glass. Then I asked what dish would go best with it, and again, they nailed it. It is a beautiful pot with date night vibes, run by a husband and wife team who adore their staff. I really wanted to like Parallel. I am a boujie girl and will always admit when a small plate is worth the high price point, but the small plates at Parallel were not. The arancini (a single arancino for $17) was burned and the cannelloni were somehow both over and undercooked.
