It's a pretty hairy drive going up and down so don't try and sight see while you are driving. It's part of the Wichita Mountain() range with an elevation of 2464 ft above sea level. We started in the old barn, where both employees & several volunteers were there to give us a quick run down of the family & what to expect. Then, we were led to the house & given the opportunity to explore! Each room is opulent with painted ceilings, ritzy carpets & very fancy furniture from the late 1800s. The history is amazing & was so fun to learn about. The volunteers were wonderful & knew a LOT of great facts. We LOVED our time & are hoping to return around Christmas.

There's just so many things to say that are wonderful about this gem. We were told at the visitor…read morecenter that it is the second largest visited refuge in North America. The bison are truly breathtaking. If you get the chance to see them sit and watch for a while. We were able to do some hiking and picnic. There's also camping and fishing and boating, but we didn't do any of that on this trip. We picked up lots of pamphlets at the visitor center, so we can come back again and try again. They have lots of help at the visitor center and are glad to answer questions. They also have a great little gift shop if you want to pick up a treasure or a Momento for your visit. We took the time to take the scenic drive up to the top of Mount Scott walked around, took lots of photos. We met people from all over the world up there. It was pretty amazing. I can't wait to go back and do some more hiking. We did stop on the side of the road to look at the Longhorn cattle. There are some of the original stock from back on the turn-of-the-century or release from the bloodline it's pretty neat all these things that you can do while you're here visiting I highly recommend it. It's a great adventure not just for families but just solo if you wanna get out and explore.
