I selected Paragon Industrial from their website because it was the only listed local mold remediation company in the area and the technical expertise claims made in their website. I was expecting a high level of professional protocol, conduct and ethical behavior which was not in evidence. After a brief walk-thru/inspection of our home where I pointed out 5 areas of concern, I was verbally quoted a price for 6 air quality tests with the goal of locating and identifying all mold types and their toxicity. Calibrated air samples were to be taken and sent off to an independent testing lab for analysis, classification, percentage of each component and degree of toxicity. When I asked for a written proposal confirming that sampling and testing work, I was told that such a document was not typically provided. They (Rick and Susan, the owners) had come with the expectation that they would perform the air sample testing on this first visit to our home. They were reluctant to provide a written proposal. They also were very reluctant to produce a written report explaining the results of the air quality testing by the outside testing lab they use for the analysis of the air quality samples. After an extended discussion concerning my requirements, they finally agreed to do so for an additional fee ($125) with some reservations. The ensuing discussions lead to my conclusion that there was the strong possibility of a conflict of interest if Paragon Industrial were selected to do the entire project without the properly detailed documentation and suitable independent inspections. When I mentioned this, both owners denied that would be the case. My major concerns are our family's health as occupants of the home and it's marketability in the future if complete documented transparency in solving this problem is not available. This was made clear near the end of our discussion. Approximately 45 minutes after their departure, I received an email from Susan stating: "Upon reflection of our discussion today, we are not interested in pursuing your project." That was the same conclusion I had reached during our conversations, which I fully expected and certainly agreed with. I have no problem with someone or anyone who does not want to do work for me or do business with me, nor I with them. Just do not try to sell me something of this importance and magnitude without a written proposal with terms and conditions clearly set forth and a definitive chain of documented performance and results. Based upon Paragon's reluctance, resistance and lack of appreciation for the necessity of independent inspection and documentation of the remediation work, I would not in any case contract with Paragon Industrial for any work of any kind under those terms. I have nothing good to say about this company or the work that they do. I would find another company to work on your home! Here is my recent correspondence: ME (the morning after the work was done): Just a quick note to say that I was disappointed with the amount of dust and debris left on the floors in my house after your crew did the HVAC cleaning yesterday. I understand that the project is to clean out the airducts and not the floors, but felt it a shame to see a lack of clean-up and the remnants of the work all over. Between this and your lack of communication about payment processes, I do not intend to use or recommend your company's services in the future. PARAGON (2 days later): How unfortunate. Had we been made aware of your displeasure, we could and would have made any corrections needed. As far as the miscommunication about payment, you also bear some responsibility there. Never did you mention that the payment would be delayed or escrowed. Seasoned businesses like ours, are not in the habit of extending credit to the public at large. I hate that you are displeased and you have taken this stance. Rick had some information concerning your a/c system that you may have found useful. ME: My e-mail was my note of making you aware of my displeasure. I also found that your workers drove their truck over the side wall, breaking one of the large stones. This was also completely unacceptable. In any work I have ever had done or heard of being done, an invoice was sent upon completion, which was then paid, or a deposit was requested in advance, with the remaining payment made at the end after the work had been approved. After moving into a rented house I noticed a musty smell. My roommate became sick shortly after moving in. She gets tested for allergies quite regularly, and on her next doctors visit she was found to have elevated mold spore counts of two forms of aspergilus in her lungs. We previously had another company come in and they told us that we had a major mold issue due to a leak above the downstairs bathroom-even thought there were spots in other places around the house. After my roommate continued to get sick we noticed more mold spots showing up around and in the vents. We ended up calling Paragon to come take a look because one of my family members had success and good service from them previously. Susan and Rick found that, while mold was a consequence, our actual problem was faulty insulation throughout our air ducts- causing excessive condensation. They explained every test and procedure they planned on doing, and took the time to answer the many questions my roommate and myself had. They took care of our problem quickly and professionally and truly seemed to care about our future well being. Would definitely recommend in the future.
