His shiny metal body caught the sunlight, and there was something both futuristic and kind about the way he stood there--one foot forward, a smile on his face, and a little bird perched on his hand like they were old friends. It didn't feel like just a sculpture. It felt like a moment--like he was part of the city, watching over it, maybe even cheering it on. Kids were climbing on the smaller birds at his feet, couples taking selfies, a guy playing guitar on the corner nearby. All of it somehow felt right around him, like he belonged there and always had.

This local folktale draws inspiration from art. An old…read morelocomotive was buried beneath an elm tree. One night a splash of gin spilled onto the roots, giving life to the locomotive. The locomotive transformed into a robot, rising from the ground where three birds stood. There are three different sculptures, which can be viewed as three different parts of the sculpture. 1.Awakening-displays traveling man head emerging from the ground, and it's surrounded by the 3 birds. 2.Waiting on the train-Traveling man is seating on the ground with a guitar, smiling. 3.Walking tall-38ft tall walking man with a bird on his wrist. He is walking to the Deep Ellum train station. Deep Ellum neighborhood developed around the railroad, so there is a deep connection between these two. Easy to stop by and take photo. Pretty cool.

Wow this place is surreal!!! The life size bronze sculptures of the cattle drive consists of 49…read morelonghorn cattle and 3 cowboys commemorating the historic Shawnee Trail drives. As you stand by them, you can imagine yourself in that moment, reliving the sounds and movement of the cattle. Cattle drives were a common sight throughout Texas and therefore very much part of its history. This is a great place for photos and I even saw a family of ducks going into the water. As I was visiting I saw a few kids climbing onto the cattle. Not sure if that was allowed but there were no signs around that says otherwise. I did read that some of the sculptures do get taken away to be fixed. Overall, it's a must visit. Where else can you see 49 life size sculptures of cattle. Definitely a must see, when in Dallas.

I visited the Nasher Sculpture Center for the first time this past Saturday with my 4-year-old…read moreduring their free admission day, which is held on the first Saturday of each month, and we absolutely loved it. The sculptures were beautiful and thoughtfully displayed, and it was especially heartwarming to see so many children enjoying the space alongside their families. The outdoor garden in the back was a highlight for me. The grassy area with additional sculptures felt peaceful, and the weeping willow instantly reminded me of my late grandmother's tree back in Louisiana, which made the experience even more meaningful. Everything about this museum felt welcoming, calm, and inspiring. It was a wonderful experience for both adults and children, and I will definitely be coming back again.

The DMA has a supporter membership for $120. It includes parking which would cost you $20 otherwise. You also get two free admission tickets that you can use to view the museum's collections or any special exhibitions each and every day of the year. The membership will also provide a discount at the museum store and in the snack bar. Visit twice during the year, and the membership more than pays for itself. You can buy your membership online, print the receipt, and show it for free parking. Once inside the venue, show the receipt at the check-in desk to get your free tickets to the special exhibit(s). Your DMA cards will be mailed to you in four weeks, in the mean time, use that printed receipt for everything. We renewed our membership this weekend April 2026 and went to see the Samurai Collection. Metalwork is not a favorite of mine, but I was still fascinated by the stories presented on the placards throughout the exhibit and I certainly appreciated the beautiful, intricate craftsmanship presented in each piece. I didn't realize that the Samurai swords and armor had been banned from production in Japan, so the metal workers pivoted and learned to become artisans. They started to make and repair metal embellishments, lanterns, and incense burners for the numerous temples in the country. Many of the items in this collection were from Kyoto and Nara, both places my husband and I visited in November 2009. The full body armor was fascinating. Little pieces of leather were coated in metal, painted, and woven tightly together to form a moveable, but protective layer over the body. The workmanship was exquisite. The exhibit had a few short videos you could watch to learn about the work. I especially liked the 30 second clip about the process of making cloisonné. These vases are beautiful and the process to make each one is detailed and meticulous. Kids could collect a postcard-sized scavenger hunt near the entrance and use that to stay in engaged throughout the visit. At the end, there was a sign on the wall with the answer key pictures showing which art pieces help the intricate designs they were looking for. The DMA has a permanent collection that includes a variety of art from around the globe, as well as multiple special exhibits throughout the year. Everyone is bound to find something that delights them and inspires conversation and wonder. Worth a visit!

What a spectacular collection!…read more No exhibit overwhelms the visitor. They are all consistently laid out with track LED spotlights and ample spacing. There is a good variety of subjects and styles. And even rotating special exhibits, too. Best of all, there is free admission. What a treasure to make art accessible. Plus, the museum is located two blocks of the DART station at St Paul. Any level of admirer will appreciate this museum.

BEEP! Must Destroy Humanity- but where is the train? 404 Train Error…read more This giant, Texas-sized robot seems to be lounging around, idly waiting for a train. Usually robots are so- unrelaxed, but this one is chillin'. It's appropriate for Deep Ellum, where everything has a relaxed, laid back vibe. There's a few of these robots around the Deep Ellum area, they're all huge, polished steel, and whimsical! The robots are along the DART line, so they're cool spots to take in the art. I always appreciate local, large scale public art! Way to go Dallas for getting these installed.

Art like this makes our cities come alive--I'm so happy to have something like this in Dallas! It was a great spot to add to our scooter tour of Deep Ellum with out-of-state guests!
