I received a message from the property that they do not allow pets. Perhaps the booking service failed to state he is a service dog. I am not sure of the reason, but I did cancel the reservation. Typically, when hotels do not accept pets, and you show up with a service dog they will sell you a room, but the attitude is there. Not saying the Gateway Lodge would have an attitude; however, I didn't want to push it as I plan on moving to the area.

The included breakfast was quite good for a budget hotel, with lots of hot choices including scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, potatoes, oatmeal, and fresh made waffles. There is hot water for tea, coffee, and fresh juices. The room itself was small and had good amenities including a refrigerator, TV, and a well constructed bathroom. Temperature is controlled via a rather loud wall mounted A/C unit. The only other option is opening windows. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that the floor was more comfortable to sleep on than the bed. It had a massive bowl/divot in the center which put me in a very awkward and painful position. I was unable to get to sleep until I moved to the floor. Given the increased prices and the poor condition of the beds, it's unlikely that I'll return in the future.

The Wi-fi could have been stronger but seriously for the price this was a life saver as were the super comfy beds upon which we had the best night's sleep we've had in ages. The beds are better than our own! AND THEY GIVE YOU TOILETRIES! And laundry! Full kitchen was sparsely appointed and that would be a drag longer term but we were in late and out early and grateful for a fridge to hold leftovers until we reheated for breakfast. Yay Chinese food! (Thank you, Yelp, for helping us find that place.. name escapes me but it's open til 9:30 and quite good.) It's a quick bike ride into the attractions of town (great coffee shop- see reviews) and right on/ off the freeway but still has a remote feeling and great views. We could not believe we got all this for under $80!

We…read moreused OnX to respect the land and access points and hiked 5-11 miles daily around the property. We were lucky to put an arrow in an elk, unlucky to do it right after a hailstorm which made the mountains extremely muddy and slippery. With the truck parked 5 miles away up and down several thousand feet of elevation, we decided to try calling HL Ranch to allow access to the private road below our ridge to have a safer pack out that would be quicker to ensure meat preservation. The new manager was more than willing to help recover the animal, as we had respected the private land while going after the elk on the surrounding public land. We met the whole staff later and ended up buying some grass fed beef to take home (extremely delicious so far!!). The whole operation of HL Ranch is impressive and they have made serious steps to improve the land after the 2020 fire. It is a beautiful landscape, and the ranch is all about preserving and improving the natural wildlife habitat for fauna while sustainably raising grass fed cattle. This place is so beautiful that if I wasn't already married, I'd use this place as my wedding venue. Loved every moment of those mountains.

The accommodations and hospitality were outta sight! This was a dream vacation and we are all still talking about it! There was plenty to do inside and out with the rec room downstairs filled with games, cards, a bar, a huge TV that can do 3-D, movies, a ping pong table, and outside we had horses, 4 wheelers, and beautiful Colorado scenery. The rooms were very spacious and exquisitely decorated. We had 13 people in our group and it was not a squeeze. There was plenty of room on the outside decks, patios, various indoor lounges and living rooms to roam around and find a comfy and quiet spot. All the food was delicious. They made us breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and snacks. We were all very spoiled! I would highly recommend this trip to anyone! This would be great for a family but also for a honeymoon! This is own and run by a family and they really know how to treat you like a king! Hope we get to come back someday!
