Did not ask if I needed help, just kept slamming things around while I tried to shop. I asked if he was ok and if the last customers made a mess. (The 3 drunk ladies that were shopping ahead of me were treated with upmost courtesy.) They have a fine selection of stationary etc. Nothing to die for, though I would have loved to have picked up a magnifying glass. While I understand theft is probably high on this area, this was just rude behavior. Avoid. read more

I placed an order for a mechanical pencil with a fat grip. I normally like fat fountain pens and, having found a graphite size I like, I decided to get a fat pencil to see if it would better suit me. Papier Plume was one of only a few retailers that still had the limited pencil. Now, I understand why. They sent a rollerball pen instead of a pencil. I contacted them over the weekend and by Tuesday had heard nothing from them,. I contacted them again, waited 24 hours and again heard nothing. In 25 years of online shopping I have never experienced this situation. I will never order from them again, and I would advise others look elsewhere. read more

It's been a little over 10 years since I last stopped in at Papier Plume. I'm not sure where I was walking at the time, or what I was really doing work colleague-wis, as my Royal Street positioning in the present and looking at the past was way off. Been trying to get there for a few weeks when I saw there a seller of the popular Lamy fountain pens. And wow they have a great selection. More than I thought. The lady who helped me was so familiar with fountain pens I thought she could be the owner but I don't think that's the case. Just passionate about the stuff there. Really helpful! I was so focused on the pens I didn't have time to look for other stuff but did score a great deal on a pen tray for the desk. And to make the experience 10x better was the golden doodle puppy! I love sneaking off to this place when I have down time in New Orleans. Such a lovely city with a lot of inspiration. I'll go for paper, stickers, ink, pens for my stay. I love fountain pens and ink, and they have a decent variety. I've bought a few pens there and they had great insight on the pens, compared to other sellers who know nothing about fountain pens. They are passionate about what they do, such as wax seals and inks. Their inks are great and I'd put them in my more expensive pens, but they have a lot of great inks in store from other brands. The prices are a market price and yes you can get some online for much cheaper. But they have some pens that have gotten harder to find, but a fair price. They also know what to say to get me obsessive over pens and just make me sneak back there to get it or order online. I would stay there for hours if I could. read more

I specifically looked up Papier Plume because I wanted to buy a higher end fountain pen and ink to add to our collection as souvenirs of our trip to NOLA. We went into the store Monday 4/22/24 just before noon, there was the owner/manager and a young man working with inventory behind the counter with one other customer. The owner helping a lady with a purchase when we walked in, but both employees completely ignored my husband and I. We proceeded to look around, found some ink we wanted to buy and also saw two higher end fountain pens we were interested in purchasing. After waiting over 20 minutes without being acknowledged by either employee, we left. On Wednesday 4/24/24 we went back. There was one other customer but three employees. A young lady behind the counter greeted us with a cheerful hello when we walked in, but again the same two male employees completely ignored us. We spent another 20 minutes waiting for someone to help us, and again we were ignored. I absolutely do not recommend wasting your time at this store. If they're incapable of dealing with more than one customer, they really should stick with mail order only. read more

This is a one of a kind store, that I haven't found anything comparable to in the Houston area. In fact, I ended up buying seals with the letter of my new last names, if I ever wanted to have extra pretty letters sent. Playing with the seals and wax is fun, because they teach you a little bit about it at the store and then you settle on choosing the seal you most prefer. As silly as this sounds, I had a hard time choosing. What if I wanted a cat, or a letter? Hell, I got all of them. We got good recommendations on wax and where to buy it, since we're not local to the area, which I found very helpful. All the different beautiful fountain pens are a right-handed person's dream come true. Alas, I am a lefty and have that ink smudged all over my hand thing, hence why I generally avoid pencils and pens with wet ink. However, if I could use them without looking like a Pre K student, I would. I like that for a stationary store it's a unique find and has a little bit of everything, contributing to the magic of New Orleans. If you're a tourist, you definitely have to visit. If you're a local, I say shop local and support businesses like this as its a lot better than buying stuff from the local Office Depot-where the price and quality can't really be matched. read more

It is a beautiful little shop with lots of interesting items, including pens made from parts of the Titanic and one that was inspired by 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Journals of all sizes. Fountain pens of all types. Wax seals and wax. The super sweet employee gave me some tips for the wax and answered all of our questions. I stumbled across this shop while walking around the French Quarter and I'm so glad I did. They have some beautiful pens along with stationery, cards, messenger bags, and other little trinkets. The salesman I interacted with was helpful in explaining the difference in some of their feather pens without being pushy or overbearing. I ended up purchasing a brass feather pen and a small brass holder to display the pen in. There was also a Jean Pierre Lapin pen I had my eye on but was hesitant to pull the plug on given the price tag. The prices here range from not too bad to am I really going to spend this much on a pen?? This one was somewhere in the middle. Still thinking about the pen after returning home from my trip, I bought it online. They were doing a special anniversary sale so I took advantage of it. Between that, how frequently I intend to use it, and the five year warranty, I'm managing my guilt quite effectively. You can tell the staff really take pride in the products. I have been coming to this store off and on for about ten years. Every time I walk in their door, I feel like I am walking into an art wonderland. This place is filled to the brim with notebooks, ink, calligraphy sets; you name it. They even feature works from local artists. It is a place for all people, from artists to anyone who just needs a new notebook or pen. Ever since I was a kid, every time I walk in, they have always been very warm, friendly, and engaging. I never leave there empty-handed or empty-headed. Through my interactions with the staff there, I learned how powerful ink can be, and now I am considering changing my medium from watercolor and ink to just ink! I did not realize how diverse a medium ink was until today, and I thank this store and its staff a hundred times over for their help and service to the art community! read more

I sought out Papier Plume for the pens, as I'm a collector with just over 30 currently, having owned dozens more in the past. Visited the shop when I found myself in New Orleans from out of state, and after looking at a few other pens (Pilot Custom 823, a Montegrappa, Visconti Rembrant) I asked to see a Visconti Homo Sapiens, as I'd been interested in obtaining one for quite some time, but hadn't yet been able to hold or write with one. It's a more expensive pen than the others, and I was told "sorry, we only take those out of the glass for serious buyers. Most people just come in to look at them and then end up not buying, or they buy them online." I mentioned that I was in the market for one (I was planning on buying a pen on this trip), but to no avail. I find it likely that it was because of my age, but alas. I ended up leaving after that due to feeling offended without purchasing a pen. Ended up buying one online for the same price as they had in store. Good store for viewing, but I'd purchase elsewhere due to the shaky customer service. read more

For all you faithful Yelp friends who read my reviews, you know that I am a lover of high quality stationery, paper, pen and ink shops like this. So like a moth to a flame, I was drawn into this beautiful shop in downtown New Orleans which also happens to be on one of my favorite streets in the French Quarter. Let me start by saying that the owners are wonderful people. This becomes almost immediately apparent upon entering. They are welcoming, helpful and kind. Their store is irresistable and so lovely with eye-catching items everywhere you look. There are beautiful writing implements, inks and ink wells, exquisite European stationery, wrapping papers, calligraphy sets, gorgeously bound journals and the like. As I browsed around, I suddenly espied the sealing wax and seals. Oh my. Years ago when I was in junior high and high school in NYC, the ancient practice of affixing one's seal into a pool of colored wax on the outside of envelopes had been resurrected. Seals and sealing wax were readily found in shops everywhere. I still have my original initial seal that I used back then. Nary an envelope left my hand for years without my seal across the flap. The use of seals on letters and documents can be traced back to the Old Testament and I've always thought it a lovely way to close an envelope with a personal logo, totem or initial. Here, I found an array of Italian-made seals along with an assortment of richly colored waxes. I fell hard once again. All things considered, given the things that I love and that interest me, I should have been born a few hundred years ago. Both the owners showed me some new sealing techniques which include using both wax and ink stamps. I walked out with two new seals, an assortment of inks and quality wax sticks and I'm all set now to emblazon the envelopes on my soon to be written out Christmas cards and envelopes. If you're into beautiful pens and good inks as my husband is, this too is your place. There is a wide variety from which to choose of both. There are many things here that would make wonderful and unique gifts. If you can't get to Royal Street in New Orleans any time soon, check out the website. This is a small, local shop and any questions you might have I'm certain would be readily answered via phone call as well. I am in Love with this store! I was in New Orleans in April for a business trip and wandered in as I was sightseeing one day. I was so amazed by the gorgeous displays that I was motivated to purchase my first Fountain Dip Pen set! It was made by Bortoletti and came complete with an ornate pen holder and bottle of ink. The next day I found myself there again and purchased a Bortoletti leather journal as well! The store is filled with an abundance of quality items such as leather bags, fountain pens, journals, stationery, and wax seals. They even had a fountain pen made of steel from the Titanic! I love visiting fountain pen shops. This shop is fantastic. They have a great range of inks and I like their color interpretations. They order their ink powders from France and a few other European places and mix the colors right here in the shop so you never know when that color will be available again if the powder distributor has changed its supplier or recipe. It's not mass produced and that appeals to me. This shop also carries some fountain pens and accompanying paraphernalia like blotters, holders, ink wells, various papers and local NOLA flavored cards and stationary. I love that their ink colors carry NOLA names like red beans and rice, moss, and house of the rising sun. read more

Indeed, I shall confess at the outset of this review that I have an obsession with quality paper and fine writing instruments (nb this does not necessarily mean super expensive) Today I had occasion to visit because a handmade pen I acquired some many many years ago needed a refill. Not just any refill, a ballpoint straight short barrel with no obstructions along the refill barrel. The search for this refill has been a project of a few months and acquisition is like finding a unicorn in a haystack, on the moon, during a full eclipse. I walked into this beautiful small shop in the French quarter, which I have visited many times and was immediately distracted by a few new beautiful glass pens and other items. On to the counter, I presented my pen and my quest. At first it was deemed an easy problem- until we actually started trying to fit the refill into the barrel. Undeterred and after maybe 10-15 minutes of polite and fun discussion, the replacement piece was FOUND! A lovely shop for those who like friendly people, beautiful things and still enjoy the art of writing and all things surrounding it. From casual stationery to formal paper, business folios and brief cases, and all manner of lovely writing instruments, including their elusive and pedestrian refills, Papier Plume has been a french Quarter mainstay for years. Let me first say that the quality of the pens and the merchandise itself in this store is amazing. The reason I am leaving a 2 star review is the experience we had. We went in with 3 friends and spent over $400 and were very happy with our purchase. The cashier overcharged us and told us that it was a mistake so she processed the return and said it would be back on our card immediately. She then had to re charge the correct amount. All of these transactions over drafted our bank account and we were charged bank fees because of her mistake. The next day we called the bank and they said to go talk to the store to see if they could fix the problem and she was very rude. First the manager thought we were there to scam the store and that was so offensive to start out with, and then the cashier tried to back track what she previously said about the return being available immediately. She lied to all our faces and said she never said that. In the end they did not help us and it's unfortunate, the good thing is our bank has great customer service and they will help us by getting our money back from this horrible experience. read more

This is a gorgeous fancy shop for people who still hand write letters and appreciate the finer things. We stopped in here just to look around and WOW- they have gorgeous things here. I loved the ink pens that you have to actually fill with ink. They have ink wells containing inks of all different colors: different shades of blue, greens and coppers really blew me away. They also sell a large assortment of fancy magnifying glasses with beautiful silver handles and gorgeous wrapping paper and stationary. If you are looking for a unique gift for a writer in your life, Papier Plume should be your first and last stop. The store owner was extremely welcoming and asked where we were from and if we needed help with anything. I recently had a wonderful experience with Papier Plume that warranted a yelp review. I was given a pen by a friend whose father is a pen manufacturer. The fountain pen that I received was somehow dysfunctional, but I didn't want to call my friend and complain... as it was a generous gift and I didn't want to appear unappreciative. I went over to Papier Plume, (which admittedly my family has purchased many things from) and informed them of the issue with the pen. They spent a solid week tracking down the necessary parts and emailed and called me with updates. I was extremely impressed with their professionalism. This is the kind of service that you find where people really care about their product and service. Papier et Plume is a very cute and well thought out store in the French Quarter. They have an extensive selection of wax seals-perhaps the best selection in the city. I think that there were more plumes (the french word for pen) than there was papier. They had gorgeous papers. The owner of the store is from France. He's very friendly and kind.
