Went to Wai Ying in Binondo last weekend with my family and it was exactly what we needed after a…read morelong day exploring. The dim sum cart came around quick, and we loaded up on hakaw, siu mai, char siu bao, and those amazing crispy taro puffs--everything was hot, fresh, and tasted just like the old-school spots back home. The spare ribs were tender and saucy, not overly sweet, and the yang chow fried rice had that perfect wok hei. Service was friendly even though it was packed; our server made sure we had hot tea refills without us asking. Super affordable too--we fed six of us and still had leftovers for under 2k. Total comfort food win. Definitely heading back next time we're in the area. Five stars all the way!

What's the big draw? Long queue for late lunch on a week day? I don't get it. We ordered HK style…read morefried noodles, spare ribs, siomai, roasted duck congee, roasted duck and asado rice. I can summarily declare that all the items we ordered were below our culinary standards in the following order from worst to not so bad. HK style fried noodles, the sauce was peanuty tasting poured over noodles. Horrible looking. The congee is not very appealing to the eyes and the palate. The duck was bony. The congee itself was barely hot. Siomai was no good either. The roasted duck with rice again lacking presentation appeal. The tofu skin roll is ok thus the 2 star. The waiter was very green. Served our sodas without glasses. Avoid and don't believe the hype.

Let me tell you a story about how I lost a tooth in Wai Ying…read more I was sitting alone in the far corner of this famed dimsum place, minding my own business and enjoying a hearty bowl of beef mami (their signature savory beef cubes with hand-pulled noodles and tasty broth) and their fried shanghai lumpia when suddenly, commotion erupted and people started scrambling to safety. It turned out that someone was getting robbed, and the lady seated next tot the door was struggling to hold on to her purse. A thief hurriedly grabbed everything else before running out of the door and into an awaiting getaway car. Before I made sense of what was happening, I felt a sick crunch as I bit down hard on the tines of my fork out of shock and panic. I watched the crime unfold as my tongue was feeling the jagged ridges of my broken tooth. Thankfully, Wai Ying bolted the doors and the entrance was no longer open on my next visit. I keep coming back for the mami, the steamed spare ribs and the hakaw which are all yummy and quite affordable. The Taft/La Salle branch of this popular dimsum chain in Binondo is not as crowded as its mother branch, so if you mind the crowds, you can check this place out.

But having restaurants near our workout places certainly spell convenience. For my friends and I, Wai Ying Dimsum is a perfect post-yoga destination. Located a few minutes from both the De La Salle University Sports Complex where we practice, this dimsum place whose main branch is in Binondo, I'm told, provides the perfect fuel post-workout. My best bets for the perfect balm to stressed minds and tired muscles are their Hakaw, Fried Tofu, and Fish Fillet Rice in Cream and Corn Sauce. My friends love their Japanese siomai and lemon chicken! Prices for the dimsum start below Php 100, which is great since we usually indulge. Hey, don't judge!

I went to Lau Chan and ate a bowl of Shabu-Shabu by myself. I'm not even sorry. The secret to great…read moreShabu-shabu is soup, and my God Lau Chan has some of the best soup I have had the pleasure of experiencing EVER. I kinda wish I had this with someone else because there was no way I could have finished this stock by myself. I also wish I was a bit more adventurous with my selection, but then my order would become too expensive to enjoy. Still, I was happy with what I had. If you're coming over, make sure to bring friends. Lau Chan is best shared with other people.

Shabu shabu seems to me kinda like pho in that it takes some experimenting to figure out how you like it, which, therefore, means you need to try it several times before you find your perfect combination. Or maybe I'm just the only person in the world who finds pho meh. After my experience at Lau Chan, I'm inclined to think the same about shabu shabu. Either we were ineffective at ordering the right combination or perhaps I just didn't like it. All I know is it wasn't a "love at first bite" experience as I've encountered with countless other new cuisines and as I was hoping based off the reviews. Helpful tourist information: This was a difficult spot for us to find. The restaurant is 4-5 blocks south of the Yelp map location. The servers didn't speak much English and even when we used Tagalog they didn't seem too keep on explaining or helping us with the menu. I'm not sure what people mean by cheap but our meal for two people (one large, sharable soup) was comparatively one of the most expensive in Manila. If you're into shabu shabu, according to the other reviews, Lau Chan seems like a great place to go. I wouldn't recommend going if you don't know much about it and think you'd have trouble communicating to the staff.
