This is somewhere I pass by many times, yet never stopped in. I finally tried it recently, and…read morefound it to be nice and enjoyable, but would I rush back? Read on ... The premises themselves are nice and modern. Everything is clean and sleek, and each table has a cute vase of flowers on them. However when the menus came out, they were just A4 sheets of paper. Nothing flash, and some quite dog eared and a bit dirty. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and it came on a potato rosti. I was very disappointed in the rosti; it was congealed and gluggy and had an oily taste, but the eggs were cooked well, the salmon fresh and the hollandaise quite tasty. Everyone else at my table liked what they ordered too. Everything came out in reasonable time, and items were well priced. The staff were friendly and attentive as well. The one thing that bugged me, but to a degree is somewhat out of the hands of the owners, is that the fresh flowers seemed to attract unwanted attention from fruit flies and little bug thingies. One even flew into my hollandaise and died there. I know they can't help little flying bug things, but it was the flowers and subsequently the food they were after and it is annoying eating while shooing away pests. Having said that, this quaint little spot is definitely worth a try at least once. I'd go back again if a friend in the area wanted to meet, but otherwise would maybe look to choose somewhere else.

But last month, a new management has taken over and has bought about quite a few changes to make it the perfect neighbourhood and family friendly café in the area. We walked into Little Oak Eatery rather late for lunch, around 3pm. As we entered, one of the staff informed us that they would be able to serve us only coffee as the kitchen has closed for the day. We were a bit disappointed as the timings of the café said they were open till 4pm. She apologized and said that coffee, pastries and similar accompaniments were available but since we hadn't had lunch, we stepped out saying that we will return at another time. Within seconds, the owner of the café came out and invited us back inside saying that he can serve us lunch. He said that the kitchen was just beginning to close and since they hadn't put anything away, they can still accommodate our orders. And so we were back inside and seated for lunch. Loved the customer service, the friendliness of the staff and their willingness to go that extra mile and serve us with a smile. The café has a very inviting ambience; large windows ensure that the area is well lit. With plenty of space inside and outside, it is the perfect place to relax and stretch out your legs. A great space for families and also to catch up with friends over coffee. Soon the drinks and lunch menu was bought out. Normally, I would try out the coffee but this time I was in the mood for something lighter and refreshing so ordered the Lemongrass and Ginger tea. And I was glad for it because it was a good quality tea brewed to perfection. Little Oak Eatery has an all day breakfast menu that is served till 3pm daily and also a lunch menu. There are also daily specials depending on the fresh and seasonal produce available. They also have a small kids menu which has all the familiar comforting classics that you wish to see in your neighbourhood café. So the little fellow ordered Egg Soldiers; nothing gets him more excited on a weekend than runny eggs. The dish arrived in style; two perfectly done eggs placed on an egg carton and a few pieces of good quality toasted sour dough bread, the whole thing placed on a rustic wooden board. Apart from it tasting delicious, I loved the fact that an everyday breakfast dish was presented in such a beautiful manner that even a child would appreciate it. My choice was the potato rosti with smoked salmon and pickled mustard served with two poached eggs. Loved everything about this dish. Clean flavours and good quality ingredients; a fine example of not much cooking required when you have good produce. The rosti was crispy outside and soft inside and paired deliciously with the heat from the mustard and the smoky saltiness of the salmon. And perfectly poached eggs to elevate it to a hearty meal. And the hubby chose to have the crispy grilled salmon with assorted veggies and salsa verde. The salmon was cooked beautifully; crispy skin with soft flaky flesh (would have preferred a slightly bigger portion though). Really fresh veggies cooked to perfection and the tangy, herby salsa verde to tie it all together. Overall, it was a delicious and highly satisfying meal. The owner mentioned that he was still adding more dishes to the menu to cater to a wider audience. He also said that he was planning on getting a liquor licence so that the café could operate on weekend nights too (that would be really great). If you are taking a look at their menu on the website, it reads rather limited but the in house menu has much more to offer. We would definitely go back, especially on days when we just want to relax and indulge in simple yet delicious comfort food.

The thing is that the staff were actually pretty good, and they made some absolutely delicious pancakes, and well as a pretty decent pot of tea as well. In a way it was fortuitous that I found this place since I was wandering around looking for something to eat, and the welcome that I received was pretty good as well. It's not the most convenient of places, being in the suburbs and all that, but I guess that is why it had some charm.

And what about a poached egg? Can't forget the poached egg! Lucky my meal had it all! Even mango, my favourite fruit in the whole wide world! Only problem was... the mango was over-ripe. I know, I'm being super anal, but it just crushed me that rather than bringing the elements together, it tore them apart. I should write a song. Cry me a river, you say. It was still a good brunch. I'd come back. Next time I will also know not to order chai latte (too milky, not enough spice), considering that Little Chloe's claim to fame is their coffee! Specialty coffee and roasters. Duh, it should have been a no brainer. One thing I MUST mention, is their super cute table reservation system. I'd think it would be a hoot if they placed a laminated photo of Liam Neeson on the table instead of the scrabble letters. But hey, love the scrabble as is!

My sister ordered the zucchini fritters, which came with two poached eggs. They were really good, especially with their a thousand island sauce. We loved the space. It's bright and airy with plenty of room to spread out. A small thing, but I loved that there is seating with decent cushions instead of hard, flat immovable surfaces. Also, whoever chose the music playlist really knows their stuff. The music playing throughout was fabulous. We were advised that there is a new menu offered here now and that the chef has over 15 years experience overall and has been in Australia 6 years. The menu looked contemporary and very interesting: we quickly selected the corn fritters and the Tunisian baked eggs. We were knocked out by the sheer quality of both dishes. It's beautiful food. The corn fritters were with smoked salmon and poached eggs. They're lovely fluffy fritters with great flavour including a fascinating hint of spice. Ditto the gorgeous baked eggs. These are the best I've ever had. The previous best were those at Jerry Joy in Thornbury but these topped those to my astonishment. They are rich and substantive again with delicate hints of spice. And, whoever decided to add the slice of lemon is a visionary too. The acidity is just beautiful with the dish. We finished with coffee and red velvet cake. Both were wonderful again. The coffees were expertly made, a real Melbourne coffee. The cake was excellent too. Lovely, tasty and moist. The perfect finish. This was an unexpectedly great meal. We loved the place, the food and the service. The world's most stunning woman and I commented to each other that this was a pretty much the near perfect brunch. Put Servery and Spoon in the inner suburbs and they'd be fighting off customers and have lines around the block. It was that good. Finally, I'm conscious that I'm giving another 5. This is another case of not having the capacity to give a half mark. A 4.5 would have been optimal, but a 4 far too low. In those circumstances, there's no option but to choose the higher mark. (Our sincere thanks to Nitin and Ritika for the invitation to visit here. Put simply, we loved it. We wish them and their venture the good fortune that it and they deserve.)

It's a huge space with lots of table space and lots of different seating options from lounges to communal tables and the basics. The service is the only thing that stopped the bakers wife from getting 5 stars! For how big the space is they didn't have enough waiters/waitresses to cover the room meaning your wait for service at times was long! Unfortunately for a first impression as well when your friend gets the wrong dish delivered to him and he has to get up to talk to the waitress, it doesn't leave the best taste in your mouth. It's saving grace was it's quality of product! The coffee was great, a really nice latte that really did the coffee beans justice. I had the French toast with the additional bacon, it was served with cinnamon, maple syrup and berries. The contrast of flavours was heavenly and Devine, leaving me satisfied, hooked and content to leave on that note. We were seated a while before I had to ask a waiter for some menus (so the service was pretty lacklustre from the start). Our drinks took around 15 minutes to arrive (my coffee was great but my partner's hot chocolate was weak and lukewarm) and nobody came to take our food order in the meantime. 30 minutes after ordering I asked the staff if our food would be much longer (I had a country train to catch), the waiter said he'd go check. A few minutes later I had to flag him down and ask again, he said it would be 5 minutes. Ten minutes after that my partner and I are still without food and getting kinda cranky so I went up to the counter and spoke to someone. They apologised and said there was a delay in the kitchen (I held back an eye roll....yes, it was a Sunday lunch but the cafe wasn't overly busy). Shortly after, our food (GLORIOUS FOOD!) arrived. The waiter apologised and said that one of the meals would be taken off the bill. So, the food. I ordered the big breakfast with my eggs scrambled and really enjoyed it (despite having to just about inhale it so as to make my train). My partner got the corn fritters and unfortunately was left underwhelmed. The fritters had potential but lost points on freshness (they had a sad, defrosted feel about them). As promised, we only paid for the two drinks and one of the meals. The staff apologised again and offered a treat from the display to take home (an afghan cookie which was pretty delish). If I was a more forgiving soul I'd give Our Kitchen Table another chance. Alas...
